ActionCam (Dynamic Camera) suddenly not working, possibly after last update

I’ve been using Action Cam since it was first introduced to change the position of my character on screen. I’ve been using it for … idk, 8-10 years? more? It’s been in the game for quite some time now. I cannot play without it, I hate looking at the game as is by default.

How did it start?

I’ve just been on a vacation and took my steam deck with me. Only addon is Console Port. It worked fine for several days. No issue what-so-ever. The only addon I have is “Console Port”, and it has a feature where it uses a custom position of the character using the action cam commands.

Then, yesterday (though maybe a day before and didn’t notice) - suddenly it stopped working alltogeather. But I am playing on linux through Proton 7.0.4 so at first I thought maybe it’s the steam deck.

But no. I get home – to my windows pc – where I don’t have console port, but have “Dynamic Camera”. Not working here either. This is the first time I’ve ever had an issue with DynamicCamera.

I go to the forums and curse forge. No one is complaining. It’s not like blizzard broke action camera and it’s not working for anyone. It seems to be just me.

What I tried

Okay, since this isn’t working on my windows machine, it’s most likely not a steam deck issue. Regardless, all the steps below were on my PC (windows 11 22H2)

I tried to look over other forum posts. Apparently dynamic camera doesn’t work if you don’t have the following turned on:

  • Under Accessability → General
    • Motion Sickness set to Allow Dynamic Camera movements → mine is set to this
    • Camera shake set to Full → ofc, mine is set to this.

I turned off all addons bar Dynamic Camera and I can’t change anything.

I tried the console commands:

  • /console ActionCam full
  • /console actioncam full (not sure if case sensitive)
  • /console ActionCam on
  • /console actioncam on (again, not sure if case sensitive or not)

Nada

I reinstalled the game on my steam deck, just to see if a fresh install would help. It did not. I’d rather not try again on my pc as well if avoidable.

I decided to try the forums before opening a support ticket. But I need to fix this. I just do not enjoy the game, one bit, with the character in the middle of the screen like it’s 2004 all over again.

Blizzard don’t support Linux.

That means you have to resolve any problems running Blizzard products on a Linux system yourself, or with the aid of the community. Blizzard will not help.

Secondly, I don’t know what “Action Camera” is, but if it is a third party program, or addon, Blizzard don’t support those either. There IS however a forum, “UI and Macros”, where you can get community help with addons (but not 3rd party programs).

No offense but if you have no idea what the subject is, why get involved?

Action cam is not a third party nothing. It’s a blizzard UI option with no sliders, just console commands.

While yes it’s on linux, it emulates a windows and is only part of the story. I got home and it wasn’t working on windows either. I don’t know how to make that clearer.

That doesn’t alter the fact that Blizzard does not support Linux in any way.

did you not read what I wrote? It kinda seems like you stopped half way.

Also Linux doesn’t emulate windows. Doesn’t even try to. WINE provides a windows emulation layer, for certain applications. Cedega is just a nicer more user friendly front end(ish) to WINE.

I have 20+ years as a Linux systems administrator lol. Ubuntu Headless preferred. Gentoo Hardened hated.

it still doesn’t alter the fact that Blizzard will not support your problem because its a Linux system.

Now if you post about it being a problem with your Windows system, then yes, they might support that.

I guess you haven’t heard of proton. Either way, you don’t know anything on the subject, are not helpful in the least, miss the point of the post. I’m just curious why you’re here.

Never mind, you are obviously determined that Blizzard supports Linux. So I will just let THEM either ignore your post or tell you otherwise, since you don’t seem to want to look for help in the community sections.

Have fun waiting for that elusive Blue post.

Fixed the issue with a bit of help from Blizzard. If someone else finds this in the future, maybe it helps you too.

I can’t be sure exactly which step fixed the issue since I did all 3 togeather, but I very much suspect it to be the console command. I’ll walk you through the steps:

Deleted CurseForge (my case, any addon management software you have should go).
Renamed the 3 folders, WTF, Interface, Cache.
Opened the launcher, it re-downloaded the above folders.
Re-installed curse, re-downloaded the addon (DynamicCamera, my case)

At this point in time it did not work, so I did the extra step. I didn’t even notice there was an extra step until it was pointed out:

Namely, typed /console cvar_default into the chat. Got the message that I did not have permission to do whatever I did, but it obviously worked, since all my video seetings went to their defaults.

And VOILA, it now works. Steam deck too. Because it has nothing to do with the steam deck or linux or whatever. It was a bad environment variable that had to be reset.

EDIT

I had delted dynamic camera inbetween resetting my UI and typing in the console command, just in case. I honestly suspect, all you have to do if you have the same issue, is just type in the command and nothing else. I’m 99% sure it’s just a bad env variable.
