What is your favourite “morally dark” themed quest?
Apart from one quest in the first zone of Pandaria already mentioned on the forums a lot recently, for me its the story of Stalvan Mistmantle - a deranged undead predator who fell into madness because of his indecent attraction to his young student Tilloa. He later planned to kill Alyssa Eva - so his dark bloodthirst was not just a one off but rather an ongoing aspect of this undead rogue.
Some have speculated that he only got away with his crimes for so long because the Night Watch of Duskwood was corrupted and was more interested in collecting his taxes than proteting innocents from Mistmantle’s wrath. It paints a very dark picture of Duskwood’s community.
What do you think about the Legend of Mistmantle as a quest? Should the Night Watch have taken action sooner? Why were they so eager to protect such an evil being?
Problem in the Legend of Stalvan Mistmantle was that the Nightwatch refused to take any action, preferring to close their eyes, pretending the problem doesn’t exist
My favourite part of the Mistmantle story is the subtle implication that where the various groups of Darkshire would often be at one another’s throats, they all somehow agreed that Mistmantle was a troublesome addition to the community.
So what caused the Night Watch to not seem to recognise this? Did they indeed see it, and felt, erroneously, a figure of hatred was somehow a benefit to this community?
Is this an optimistic reading?
I really don’t get why they make the Night Watch in Darkshire seem so useless with all the things that is shown to them about the happenings in darkshire and do nothing with that information.
Crimes like that of Stalvan’s were probably of no concern to them. At least not while the higher-ups in Stormwind didn’t take note of them. All they really wanted was to keep the semblance of peace. I don’t think they ever really cared about the people.
I mean, duh, of course they didn’t. As we all know, they were eventually revealed to be evil Legion cultists. Considering that they appeared to have no problem with the undead rogue’s depravity, is it really much of a surprise that they were rotten to the core themselves?
Thank you for the explanation! Did not really understand the lore before. Still slightly weird, one would think they would still have standards and morals. But i guess cultists are cultists and let anything pass no matter how bad it is.
I’ve seen people say that it was better for Stalvan Mistmantle to do what he did in a controlled environment where he could be rehabilitated like in a guild but idk, the end result didn’t look all that controlled to me and ended catastrophically.
Surely it would have been better for the Night Watch to just step in or the community in Darkshire and remove him before it spiralled.
I mean for how long were they cultist?
ever since its birth? or only recently?
was their turn to the legion the work of one of the many spies that would take human form and lead them astray?
contributing the entirety of their neglect to legion cultism is kind of lazy
they after all do take action against threats to the town, just not the ones inside it
its a city that wants to keep its secrets, they don’t want to cause panic, so it may be easier to blame a murder on the random worgen or undead, maybe even an outsider.
That said I like to bring up the secret quest you begin in the broken shore intro
where you bring back a memento from a dead crusader to his wife, only later to return to find out she killed herself and your reward is her hat.
yeah you pretty much just indirectly caused a death and you take the victims hat as your reward for it, pretty messed up.
Unfortunately the Night Watch consists of mere human beings who easily succumb to greed and can be bribed. I’ve heard somebody theorize it’s even in a subscription-based form, with the ne’er-do-wells paying monthly fines onto their overseers.
It’s a shame that the Night Watch values their money more than their reputation as ablebodied men and women of the Grand Alliance, committing to a great duty of protection and law enforcement.
There is also the long forgotten vanilla quest for warlocks to summon their succubus.
you are tasked with the murder of two innocent and pure of heart men, you stalk them and take their pure hearts so you may summon your sexy demoness.
but I mean, the PC does a lot of messed up things, which is why I doubt the PC really is as noble as blizzard seems to want to portray them as.
The night watch along the Mayor of Darkshire had betrayed the Alliance after all, and turned towards the Burning Legion. And they would back Stalvan too, cause of the corruption.
The Uncrowned remains our only hope, as the Night Watch and Legion have them on the list.
Duskwood would’ve been freed of Stalvan sooner if wasn’t for night watch’s corruption. Uncrowned shall do this duty, though.
Long live the Uncrowned.
