Addons doing automatic actions

I was going to post this in the Blizzard multiboxing with Isboxer thread. However I think this is kind of a different subject.

I have several addons that automate actions in game, Auto sell, Accept summon. Heck I even found one the other day that auto mounts you if you stand still for more than 3 secs (Dugi quest tools) A really popular addon that many people use (leatrix plus) does most of these things. Can an addon actually do something that’s against the TOS? I’ve always believed since I started playing 15 years ago that if an addon can do something it’s allowed as long as it’s not opening an executable file on your pc to manipulate the game.

Am I wrong? What makes automation from an addon ok without you pressing anything? I’ve thought about it for years yet here we all are using addons that do it all the time. What’s the actual stance on this?

They are functions within the API that Blizzard have done themselves, and not a 3rd party thing akin to the Multibox’ing issue…

That’s what I’m asking. I’m asking if an addon can do something is it always allowed?

Thought my post made it clear that it was…?

Of course, but the way you worded it made it sound like my post was idiotic or something? The post was also about making a point. Hence I didn’t post it in the multiboxing thread, Like I said.

To my understanding the actions you mentioned can be replicated with a macro or script via ingame chat so, addon saves, copy and pastes the information you need or lines them with a certain action to perform.

I’m not 100% sure on how they trigger when you activate a vendor or if certain addon will always be allowed, they have broken addons before if they disliked it from what I recall.

Did speak to some player who made their own addon also, calling out exact corruption levels in /say to give heads up on when to heal and such, Idk if that was completely legitimate but i’m aware some people use private addons also.

Yes… it did come across like that, plenty of chips on shoulders around here… lol

I don’t think they would outright ban for this unless it was botting hard or something but don’t hold me to that, wouldn’t be good idea lol

I will add some to yours in that I use Easy Delete (so I don’t have to type delete all the time when I want an item deleted). H.H.T.D (healers have to die) marks healers in BG’s, weak auras to name a few.

I think in such cases it is not controlling more than one account with a single key press, it is just a shortcut. I do see your point of view though.

Addons can only do what Blizzard allows them to do. All the functions in the API that would allow for any sort ot botting are marked as protected and can only be used in built in default interface and don’t work in addons. If Blizzard finds something that can be done like that via addon, they just remove that funciton or make it protected. Right now Blizzard allow for automation via addons of things that aren’t related to combat.

So don’t worry about

That’s exactly what I thought and got told when I first started playing many years ago. I just wasn’t sure if that was offcially the case. I know about the raid addon they broke a few years ago that made raiding to easy, I forget the name of it. Makes sense.

Exorsus raid tools, still exists but yes they removed some of the functions.

If its an addon and not a separate program, you wouldn’t get banned for it. It may get nerfed but you could get punished for it.

Blizzard has dealt with addons in the past, the WQ addon in legion comes to mind and fits this scenario best.

I think the obvious answer to your question is this: If it is contained within the game itself, then it is fine and fair game.

In my opinion, i think third party things have too much of a presence in this game and i would like to see them turned down a notch, raiderio hooking into the game and spying on characters comes to mind. Pvp addons giving people an advantage over other players through visual clarity and infomation. Ect.

To be honest you could look at Macros as automation, if you make a macro that pushes two buttons isn’t that technically the same thing? You pushed one button but got two abilities.
