After a hiatus of about a year, I want to give Dragonflight and WoW in general a (new) chance. However, after playing another mmo for a bit, it has become more clear that I really do prefer a more ‘filled’ server/environment where you see and interact with other players, also outside of instanced dungeons/raids.
Since a bit before BC came out, I have been playing on Steamwheedle Cartel (RP server - didn’t know much about servers in general back then). Over the years I have somewhat grown attached to my characters so I was thinking about transferring them all together to another server (about 12 in total).
As for why:
Seeing more people in general (main city hub, current xpac zones).
Active/filled AH and such so selling/buying shouldn’t be a hassle.
Guilds: I want to at least have a chance to do normal (and hc) raiding; I expect this to be easier on a server with more people.
Etc.
That being said, a server transfer is not cheap and can’t be changed/undone (see limitations). So this leads me to the question: what should I pay attention to when deciding which server to transfer to and do you have any other tips ?
I’m already aware about alliance/horde balance and that bigger servers may have waiting time especially at a new xpac launch.
Try making a new character on some servers, check the guilds out there and just see how it goes. If you finally found one you like, transfer your main character over then just wait for a sale if you want to transfer others over.
Or farm some gold ingame, buy tokens, pop money on Blizz wallet then buy transfers.
My priority when choosing a realm is a large population of the faction I’m playing as. I want a busy realm with lots of players, therefore giving me a choice of lots of guilds. The AH is good because there is a plentiful supply of items and prices are kept competitive. Dead realms tend to have higher prices because there is less supply, driving prices up.
You can use some sites as a guideline as to how busy they are.
I have my Horde characters on Draenor and my Alliance characters on Silvermoon. When a new expansion hits there will be queues and sometimes lag but for me it’s worth it to reap all the other benefits. Some people prefer slightly less populated realms to get less issues.
Cross faction play was introduced at the end of this expansion and that is having an impact too. Although we currently can’t have cross faction guilds (we may or may not get these in the future), many guilds have set up a Horde and Alliance version and will communicate via a community. Certain activities can be done cross faction such as raiding (excluding LFR), Mythic and Mythic Plus dungeons, and Rated Battlegrounds. These are all classed as PuG activities (Pick up Groups).
I also have my horde characters on Draenor and was already thinking about Silvermoon to transfer my alliance characters.
About sales: seems they lower the cost a bit or increase the amount of characters you can transfer. Seems a sale won’t make a huge difference for 12 characters.
May want to read up on that cross faction play, missed that somehow.
