Advice regarding pain in arm/fingers while gaming

Hi!

So for the past year or so I have gotten bad pain in my right arm (mouse hand) while gaming wow.
I do stretches etc, I have a good desk, chair and I do think about my posture while playing.
However, the pain got even worse while playing with the razer naga mouse, probably a lot of strain on the hand with all abilities on the mouse (tumb).

Any tip for a good mouse, ergonomically good? any mouse that has worked better for you, if you have similar issues?
Guess I have to learn the proper way of keybinding with my left hand on the keyboard, but maybe a better mouse would help a lot.

Any advice appreciated

Screw new mouse setups and go to the doctors and get it checked out.

Could be a number of things (i am not a doctor) from RSI to carpel tunnel. Only way to find out is go see your GP.

Dont just ignore it and play though as doing so could result in permanent damage.

thanks for a quick reply!

Yeah, I should have mentioned it … Been to the doctor and the typical advice is given; rest, stretches etc etc.
While that helps, I would hate to stop gaming completely due to this… so I thought maybe a good mouse or something would help when I try it out again.

My advice is to quit gaming for a while and visit a specialized doctor. Besides work related tendinitis, I’ve had the wrong mouse (and desk) cause nerve entrapment in my hand, that happened over a months period, and took one and a half years to get rid of. These conditions can be anything from mild to serious, so don’t underestimate them.

I wouldnt ignore it, it simply can`t be ignored urgh :expressionless:

Quite painful- been gaming for like 10-15 years, never had an issue- then suddently BAM, so painful.

The pain got way worse those after getting the razer naga,

Persist with your GP. Keep calling and going until they’ve had enough and actually help you.

Question: does the pain instantly stop as soon as you stop gaming (i.e. when you go for a drink or something)? or is it something that builds over time while gaming then takes a while to ease off?

ouch !

Maybe I`d have to do that then :anguished:

opens cupboard and takes out shotgun
I’m sorry boy, i didnt want it to end like this :sob:

No, unfortunately not.

The pain is there no matter what I do, obviously gets worse by gaming.
Its like a light burning kind of pain from the top of my shoulder and all the way down to my fingers…
Clicking the mouse results in the worst pain, rather than just moving it sort of. :anguished:

i had some erogonomic dude come and tell me about this stuff at work:

“mouse arm” the thing u describe comes from claw grip, and also have the arm to much to the right, as in… twisting from the elbow to mouse, too much to the right

also a mouse with a higher bump is better, since the hand is almost in the max pos twist left when holding a flat mouse
thats why those erogonomic mouse that looks like bad and u have hand twisted to right

I do not understand why you would buy a Razer Naga and use the buttons on the side if your hand was already suffering from issues. That was the worst thing you could have done lol.

I use the Logitech G502, it is very comfortable, with adjustable weights too so you can make it heavier or lighter.

I’d also recommend you play ranged specs over melee specs, melee specs do a lot more running and looking around which results in a lot more mouse movements.

Again not a doctor,so take this with a pinch of salt, but if it originates from your shoulder and goes all the way down your arm it sounds like a nerve issue. Possibly trapped or aggravated (by muscle tension etc).

Do anti-inflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen) help?

Id still say go back to GP and keep persisting with it.

I didnt have this kind of pain when I brought the naga, justt some soreness in my neck sometimes but nothing related to the arm in that way.
However when I started using it, it obvisouly went downhill pretty fast

Loved having keys on my mouse, gameplay went up and the arm went down. Obvisouly not worth it, so I`m not using it anymore.

Thanks for the tip though

(I thankfully only play ranged)

How much time would you estimate you spend playing on a day to day basis? I am sorry for your troubles. Wish we all could live in a pain free and disease free world just slaughtering gnomes together.

I’m no dr but you could also try a wrist support?

You should be able to get one at your local pharmacy.

I get pain too, but I just have to stop playing to allow time to rest it. Mines from 30 odd years of gaming though

A completely different option is to play WoW with a gamepad. Works fine for everything but maybe highend pve/pvp

Playing through the pain is an awfull idea

I used to have this problem as well, also with a razer naga because it was just too small for my hands and it forced me to hold it “wrong”, never had any issue with mice before that either and I used to play tons of FPS games for years prior to WoW.

I bought a Zowie EC1-A couple years ago, biggest one I could find to properly palm-grip and havn’t had any more issues ever since.

So maybe it’s the way you hold the mouse that could contribute to the problem. But otherwise I’d suggest a wrist brace like Anna did.

I also get problems when I swap for long periods between console and pc… takes me a bit to stop aching.
