I am curious which one you like more and why? Which one would you recommend and what do you see as pros and cons for both? Which one has more relevant recipes for old and current content? Can you make some gold and how hard is to obtain the recipes?
Currently I am running Herbalism and Alchemy, but I have to say that I am pretty exhausted of trying to obtain some recipes and how some of them are locked behind raids (DF recipes) or just random drops (Vial of sands) and procs (TBC transmutation recipes mostly). I know some of these are irrelevant and not important but as collector, I like to try to obtain as much as I can.
So I am curious is inscription more interesting and more usable for old/current content? Or just “grass look greener” from my perspective. Does it have same RNG/proc based recipes or many locked/unobtainable recipes? Also, would like to hear from people who are using these professions why they are using them and what for?
Alchemy
When it comes to the latest content? Inscription is nice and all, but pots and vials? With the added benefit for them to last longer on you are very nice
Inscirption can’t really compete Alchemy on the long run; healing pots, little boosts…
What Inscirption can bring to the table? Compared to Alchemy? Nothing really except MAYBE ventus runes and some crafting tools/accessories (but lets face it, you will not even notice that)
Herbalism + Alchemy = you are self sufficient (especially if you toss cooking to the mix)
Even some profit could be squized out from Alchemy (or make giant growth potions to your friends to help RP their real sized Tauren/Draenei)
For old content… well… inscirption have glyps and… basically thats all
This little fox is a herbalist and alchemist too but my Nightborn an inscriptor AND Enhancer, yet can’t hold a candle to “me” - so I see both sides
Alchemy is more useful but generally not because of you being able to make pots and flasks but rather just because it gives you longer lasting flasks. Neither of them is good for making gold tho. Inscription has some dragonflying customizations that it can craft if you are a collector however you can just order those through crafting orders also.
Unless you an AH house goblin and are prepared to cancel and relist endlessly I would say Alchemy is the better of the two. Inscription has some nice niche too but has not made gold for the last 3 expansions. Be aware that Vial of the Sands is not as lucrative as it was in the past and is expensive to buy the mats from the npc’s. With so many having farmed the recipe you stand a chance of running at a loss or taking forever to sell.
I use a lot of alchemy for vial experimentation since the mats are cheap (omnium draconis 100g, concoctions almost free and mettle) at 1k investment I get about 1.5k results. It’s not much but it’s steady and easy income.
Also potion and phill duration is very nice. With patch 10.1 transmutation might be useful, but we’ll have to see yet.
Raw herbalism mats plus the awakened order/air/ decay etc can net some decent gold too. The prices are on a steady decline though
I have both. There has been alot more gold in Inscription through selling Staffs and Off-hands, than anything from Alchemy.
Unfortunately, for Alchemy, if you weren’t playing from the start of the expansion and if you’re not maxed out on KP, you’ve pretty much dropped the ball on it.
The only consumable AH item I have found that still churns a profit is Enchants.
Thanks for the info! Are you doing old expansion transmutes? I wanted to specialize in transmute for the old content so I canhave chance for making extra (currently I am elixir master), but somehow trainers are bugged and don’t offer me option to change it for 150g.
Since you have inscription as well, do you make staves and off-hands? I thoight that could be profitable.
For mog when it comes to old content, maybe
For now?
With the Forbidden Reach, everyone and their mother have tons of tokens and you could be basically naked and just tag the mobs…
So nobody really needs them - of course, im talking about the “mass produced” things
For the crafted high level ones?
Pretty nieche things and you have to be top crafter to worth it
Of course this is my personal opinion/how I see it
Thanks, I will keep Alchemy then, mostly for flask duration, some niche advantages since I already invest decent amount of time and KP in it, swapping to other professions would slow me down very much.
Since you’re also alchemist, do you know maybe is it still posible to change mastery specialization for the old expansions?
As far as I know you still can unlearn your current specialization by speaking with the Alchemy trainer in your faction capital - but I must admit ,never tried it
Alchemy will get a unique trasnmute in 10.1 as well which will be sought by others (needed for upgrades i think), also pots/phials having better/longer effects on you makes alchemy a good choice in general
Many older inscription glyphs go for very little gold still, unless you have some really rare ones. You can still earn a bit on alchemy from previous expansions but we’re not talking big money. Nevertheless I would stick to my alchemy especially if you’re a collector and already have recipes from several expansions. it’s always good to be self sufficient with pots, vials and transmutes.
If you’re really curious about inscription you could create an invoker (starts at lvl 58) and try out the inscription with her/him.
