All chars on one realm or spread them out? From an altoholic to another

Hi fellow Altoholics!

I can’t stop creating chars as I want to experience the world with a different mindset and outcome almost every time.

One problem I have run into is if I want to concentrate my horde and alliance toons to their respective realms or spread them out. Clarification, one horde server and one alliance server in my case.

I can see the benefit of having them all one dedicated server per faction. You can trade boes, gold etc. And if you are part of a guild you can establish yourself.

My other problem is that my friends (as me) are spontaneous wow players. We start and stop randomly. And they usually start on completely different servers with their friend circles. I want to play with them, but am afraid to lock a character I like to a realm.

Anyone else having this internal discussion/fight?
For the hordelliance

The two main issues are outside server limitations like no trading non-conjured items, and most importantly, having to change server every time you want to change a character instead of just changing the character. The latter is my main reason for using 1 server.

If you can get over those two hurdles and don’t mind swapping server every time somehow, then maybe spreading out is for you.

Hmm, I did not even think about that part. I think I can get over changing servers and having that load time, but I need to think about that. Thank you for your input!

@Laney: In my view, there are several things to consider over longer term…

A) Do all your friends speak English?

B) Are any of them roleplayers?

C) How much profession support does a realm need?

D) How much risk there is that the chosen realm (, if only one) is either too busy or too quiet?

E) Connected realms effectively function as one, so in certain cases a large number of subrealms is covered by being on one of them.

If your answer set is: Yes, none, not important, irrelevant and prefer big non-connected realms… Then you can focus alliance on one and horde another. Given the very common faction bias, I would strongly advice against on focusing on just one.

If your answer set is almost anything else, spreading is probably a better idea.

And finally, you have the option of “mixing”. Put most (or at least a fairly large number) of your characters on two fairly sized single realms and strategically spread others on larger connected realms to expand coverage, if your friends literally go all over the place.

Bonus question F) I assume you are only going to pay for one account? If the answer happens to be no, then there is absolutely no point in picking just two realms.

On a personal note: I knew almost on the day I started that I would eventually spread over multiple realms, because I had friends, who were not able to speak specific foreign languages and I was also interested in trying out different server types.

EDIT: Minor errors / missing words.

Thank you for your detailed answer!

I had not even thought about the risk with one realm! And in my mind it was either black or white, one realm or spreading out. The grey mixed answer had not even crossed my mind. I will for now only have one account, but I don’t know what will happen in the future.

My friends usually pop up on different realms, I don’t really know where they will show up, heh.

I think I will be going with the “mixing” option, as that seems to completely be the right choice for me.

Also, as a bonus answer. I have scoured google, the forums, asked friends, and have never gotten this nuanced and good of an answer. Thank you so much!

My characters are spread out over SSL, DMF, Moonglade and AD.
I have both horde and alliance on all those servers.

Never gave much thought about it any deeper. My Scarshield legion characters are the ones I will be focusing on in Shadowlands though.

I have all in the same realm with the exeption of the only Ally alt I did in a different realm when I started out. I left him there because I can’t trade between Horde and Alliance, so being in a different realm makes no difference anyway.

I have all my Horde on Draenor and all my Alliance on Silvermoon. This way they can pool resources. I am on a suitable faction dominated realm for both.
