I wonder if we’ll see an updated terms of service for WOW with something like this slipped in.

I mean yeah, why not.

It’s too late but if it can appease the random manager behind this decision then so be it.

Most likely they are if someone makes a new DotA Blizz wants to own it which tells me their hots game isn’t doing so well.

Reading the article it looks like this is something that has been coming to gaming for a while now. Blizz weren’t happy with Valve taking DotA and Valve weren’t happy with Drodo studios taking the autochess thing from them.

It also appears that the added line only really clarifies the first sentence in that paragraph anyway, which hasn’t changed.

Custom Games are and shall remain the sole and exclusive property of Blizzard

It is a sad indictment of the gaming industry but judging by the multimillion pound lawsuits in the music industry for a couple of notes which are reminiscent of a couple of notes in an older tune that no one has ever heard of before it is hardly surprising.

HotS failed not because it’s bad game but because it came 5+ years too late, by which the other games in the genre had taken most of the potential players in the ‘market’.
This decision makes some sense - after all, the players are using Blizz’s tools to create something. AFAIK, EA has similar policy for Sims mods.

It’s understandable. I’ve always wondered if they were going to do something like this after that happened.

Likely they’ll keep things as they are now and not enforce anything unless it’s another DotA situation.

With a clause like that they’ve pretty much ensured that there won’t be another DOTA.

So… what is stopping people from using other works that blizzard can’t claim copywrite for exactly?

I mean if somene makes a dbz custom game, is that just instantly banned subsequently destroying the actual fun of custom games.

If so, it would appear blizzard have, without a shadow of a doubt, reached the stage where they are putting money ahead of fun and potentially securing their own downfall along with it.

Dbz custom game was in the beta at least on the selector I did not play it so can not confirm if it worked or not.

I don’t think they are trying to stop custom games per se but more stop people profiting off custom games using their own IPs. If it is just for funsies then they have no issue it is when it become a for profit spin-off that they aren’t getting any monetary value out of.

https://youtu.be/-cirSo-RtvI watch this youtube video, summs up everything about wc3reforged

That guys voice annoys the living hell out of me.

I would love to but I cannot access YouTube videos on board.

What if that was the only reason they made it in the first place?
Would explain the state of the rest of the game if it’s just a vehicle to get free game concepts from map builders and modders

When it comes to the sims, the basic rule is that yo cannot make money off anything sims unless you are EA.
Ever since day1 of sims1 though, certain sites have used other ways to do it. You cannot sell ‘mods’ but you CAN sell access TO the mods. This was how TSR and co (the sims resource, not the D&D company that WotC bought out) made the phat moolah off of peoples custom content.
They would have a ‘free’ section for only registered users but ‘subscribers’ got access to more. Some sites even sold ‘credits’ to let you download more stuff every day because of ‘limits’ placed on them by their isp’s.
Later it moved to patrion saying things like patrons get to download right away and others have to wait months till the stuff goes live for the normal public.

What has this to do with w3 remade mods, maps ect you ask?
Same shtako, different day. Subscribe to me to get access to the maps! Join my patrion and for $5a month patrons get to download 3 maps per month! Dragon level subscribers get unlimited map downloads AND access to beta maps being worked on a month before anyone else!

Its still working for sims custom content makers even now. TSR still exist and afaik still sells access to other peoples cc, and many sites still use paysite systems.

New DotA from custom mods not gonna happen again. Even blizz had chance to work with Icefrog(DotA creater) with his own term. But DotA wasn’t upto a blizzard standard.

Valve identified opportunity and DotA become player driven game instead of company driven with largest price pools in esport history. Blizzard esport litterely became like nothing with 10000usd price pool money compare to DotA2 12mil.

Money :money_with_wings: no matter how much it is never enough…

Why not offer creators incentive instead of claiming all their work?

This world got money problems on so many levels

The money farm in gaming is getting stronger each year :money_with_wings:

So is this going to kill the Custom Maps scene? I only play SC2 and WC3 for Custom maps, I don’t give a damn about the default PvP side of them…

Stupid move. You can’t claim ideas regardless of platform… That’s like saying a stationary company owns whatever was written down on their products.

And I thought Blizzard couldn’t get any lower… kinda regretting coming back to WoW to this dumpster pile of a company.
