Oh no, I agree. Afrasiabi went ‘off message’ with Stonetalon Garrosh, yet -Stonetalon- Garrosh could have been an awesome Warchief and put some ‘oomph’ back into the story. Garrosh’s hatred of the Alliance for example, as opposed to just “They are our enemy” Made no lore sense. If there was one species on Azeroth he should have feared/hated it would be Blood Elves, because they devestated his birth planet with their Naga and Legion Allies. All the Alliance ever did was turn up and help save it. Northrend Garrosh was poor. It looked like Saurfang was doing all the heavy lifting, but that Stonetalon moment, even though lorewise it was wrong, was actually -Good-. "Yes, he -is- a douche, but he is an honourable -douche- would have been better than turning him into a pantomime villain.
They do write characters into corners though, they have done this with Sylvanas, and to an extent, Jaina and certainly Malfurion.
This is why I think that characters who are just supremely good at what they do, are vastly preferable to those who are infallible, or so OP that they cannot realistically be used without some clumsy plot device meaning they suddenly can’t do their thing.
AKA “Why Superman is an awful character” syndrome.
Shandris is quality, Jarod Shadowsong too, both of them are just -good at what they do-. Similarly Lor’themar, Gelbin Mekkatorque, Rok’han, Genn Greymane. Sure, they may be on their ‘A-Game’ in their field, but they are not superpowered.
Still gutted about Zelling. There was such a wasted opportunity. A Character who was Forsaken, but actually altruistic, and not in a nauseating “The Light makes me a goodie!” way, but just a very ‘human’ reason. “I want to care for my family after my death” Which is a very logical thing. I mean for goodness sake, the whole concept of having a “Will” wouldn’t exist if we didn’t have the idea of people wanting to protect their loved ones after their demise.
I reckon Zelling was a stupidly wasted opportunity, to show a more ‘human’ side to the Forsaken without any ham fisted ‘Light’ rubbish. Just a Normal Forsaken, who wants to look after the people he loved.
But hey, we don’t get to write plot for Blizz, more’s the pity!
“Human potential” has perhaps been the worst thing to effect WoW lore ever.
Even the literal zombie Windrunner couldn’t help but get a thick ol’ dose of “”“”“”“”“”“”“”“”“”“Human potential”“”“”“”“”“”“”“”“”“”"
I mean Jaina’s human potential was so potentially human she managed to SHAG ONE OF THE DRAGON ASPECTS
Zelling was one of the best BfA characters, the fact they killed him off is utterly miserable, he was up there with Voss and even Sylvanas herself in Forsaken characters
To add on, that flying magic crocodile was also banging the literal sunwell which is a big magicky pool at one point, and he’s not just any flying magic crocodile, he’s the most magickest of the flying magic crocodiles because he’s got magicky titan aspect magic and also being a blue dragon magicky magicstuff, and he’s part of the dragonflight that wanted to kill Jaina for being to magicky herself.
Lot’s of magic in that relationship.
Alleria. I used her unit a lot under my Warcraft 2 game through and in general, i am a huge elf lover. You guys and gals should see my log in screen in all games that lncludes elves of any kind. lol. Sends some nice candys around hehe. My favorite quote from her from Warcraft 2 were: “Are you still touching me?” It make me lol every time when i were younger.
Kalecgos does know how to pick 'em, doesn’t he? Imagine that conversation “So, any previous girlfriends?” “Yeah, but it was complicated” “Oh, were they too controlling?” “No, they were effectively Stonehenge mixed with an Atomic Reactor so We kinda dated for a while, but it didn’t work out. On the grounds of me being a Magic Flying Crocodile and her being a Geographical Landmark, You see, it was complicated…”
Lor’themar is my fave. The way he was written in MoP in particular was chef’s kiss. I find the characters that aren’t enormously powerful more interesting than the current ‘main’ characters - morever, he actually has a ton of lore, actual flaws, and an ongoing arc regarding the fear of failing the elves after all the betrayal they have faced. And he is the longest serving Horde leader at this point.
Alleria is kinda cool, I prefer her now that she’s a VE. Can’t stand Vereesa, though.
