Allied race survival hunter oversight

I made a Highmountain Tauren hunter lastnight as I wanted a Horde alt for Shadowlands. With the intention of leveling it as survival for a change. I noticed an oversight on Blizzards part, why doesnt the game ask you what spec you want to be when making the character?, like you get on class trials. Survival needing a melee weapon left me stuck playing as BM for most of the evening untill I got a weapon to switch to survival. Surely it would be more logical to ask the player what spec they want to be so they have the right weapon from the beginning?!

You can right click portait and change prefered loot spec no?
Maybe doesn’t work until higher level, if so, ignore my post

Purchase the heirloom polearm on your main and then go to the heirloom page on your Hunter and create it.

I know that, my point is, you shouldnt have too

Yup. That sucks. My offer would be visit the closest weapon shop and buy lvl 1 2hander and you’re good. (If you don’t have heirlooms)

True but I don’t think Blizz ever tweaked the rewards to accommodate SV. Getting weapon upgrades has always been a PITA. Classic reminded me of that.

You aren’t any specific spec when you start your adventure until you choose which path you want to follow at lvl 10.

Problem would instantly solve itself if we had both, a ranged slot and a melee slot.

Ranged abilities shoot from bow (as well as raptor during eagle)

And all ranged abilities get melee animation if you are in melee.

Do you really see no way that might cause any problems?

Only problem would be having to get 2 weapons, but since most sv do that anyway…

Edit: it would also look cool as heck

When I say “problems” I don’t mean inconveniences to us, I mean balancing issues in general and potential degenerate gameplay.

What about weapon enchants? Do we benefit from both at the same time? Do we benefit from the one that deals the hit? Can something like that even work in the current system? And what would prevent us from weaving in and out of melee to proc both of them?

Don’t see why not if it ends up being worth it, but with bfa type enchants it would not since they sometimes take a while to stack up

And the balancing part is the easiest part of this suggestion

I didn’t ask if we’d do it. I asked what safeguard would be there to prevent us from doing it, as it is something that obviously shouldn’t be allowed.

Why not though? Isnt the fact that most of your damage come from mongo enough of a reason not to go to range to try and deal dmg?

If you’re seriously advocating a spec where the optimal way to play is to move between melee and range just to cheese two weapon enchants then I have nothing to add here. Good day and good luck.

I’m not? I said I don’t see a problem with that esp with how current enchants work. It would more likely than not be not worth it.

You have no idea how much fun it is though. I played Neverwinter Online for 3 years and their Hunter Ranger class could toggle between ranged and melee attacks. Obviously they had set specs like Archer (ranged) and Combat (melee), but you were able to use both stances and it was hella fun. Blizz really should have a look at their Combat spec to get an idea of how melee should be done.
