Hi,
if you have WoW freezes after alt tabbing back into the game while using win11 - here is what solved it for me. I hope this helps someone because it was driving me crazy.
Windows Settings:
System > Display > Graphics
Turn off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling
Turn off Optimizations for windows games
PS: The settings might be hard to find because they are nested in a myriad of stuff - here is some detailed description
In the win11 settings app - select System on the Left - Now Select Display, the first category in the System settings - now scroll down until you find the headline Related Settings, select Graphics here - Optimization for windows games should be the first entry, turn it of - next you will see the menu entry Advanced graphics settings, click it to make Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling visible.
Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling seems to be the reason, but i turned off the optimization as well.

Does not work for me .I am seriously thinking of rolling back my windows to 10 as windows 10 didnot had this problem
Use windowed mode, it doesn’t need to alt tab out, and I thought this was a Nvidia driver issue as I don’t remember it doing it on AMD before I swapped.

Happens to me on win 10 without any hardware acceleration. It’s the dx12 problem much more than anything else.
I’ve disabled MPO a year ago when a similar problem first started occurring, but this is something else. The game had taken a severe beating with the patch released one month ago or so from today, which is coincidentally when everyone suddenly started reporting many different technical difficulties.
I won’t even go into other freezes mid-gameplay which significantly predate the latest ones.
I fixed it for myself by disabling the “Target fps” option. In Settings → System → Graphics
Also try display settings > graphics and disable optimised windowed something. Seemed to do the trick
Disabling MPO requires new reg value these days so MPO may no longer be disabled for you, regardless its not something you should disable anyway unless to verify or test something or bandaid as temp measure cos their no fix yet.
the issue is probably how NVIDIA handles stuff within MPO alt tabbing probably kicks it out of MPO and back in causing that hicup.
Wow has also always been very buggy with overlays so disabling any overlays except the gaming overlay might work.
Why not the gaming overlay ? well if you have an x3D cpu especially 7950x3D or 9950x3D you need that for proper scheduling of 3D cores while gaming.
Windows 11 24H2 made some changes with how MPO works now.
There also MPO treshold bassicly anything at 30 fps and lower gets kicked out of MPO, so its also possible when game is in background and you set background fps to 30 or lower that this may cause the issue, i changed my threshold to 0 because it was causing some weird app flickering for me until i set it to 0
Anyway i would consider everything placebo unless you confirm everything yourself.
Anyway this topic might be better off in tech support forum.
I still remember having alt tab freezing about 2-3 years ago, it ended up being a driver issue with the Radeon driver which was pretty obvious at the time.
Microsoft keeps changing how MPO works or improving so old reg tweaks that disable MPO no longer work, there is a new method tho but i am not intrested in disabling MPO so i never really bothered looking into it.
You’ve mentioned nvidia and win11 and I use neither. I’m certain that MPO is properly disabled. You save dxdiag to a text file and search for the phrase, it’s very quick.
These micro freezes and stuttering when you are flying around too fast so some of the things supposed to appear on your screen may not load fast enough are two entirely different things.
The low traffic area of Dornogal around the Horrific Vision portal is subject to alttab freezes whereas the crowded subzone around the main Inn does not suffer from this, which is by all logic the complete opposite expected behavior.
The /console gxrestart command seems to instantly fix these alttab freezes, at least temporarily, as so it does many other directx 12 problems mentioned over the last month, but the alttab freezes unfortunately cannot fully be avoided through the use of directx 11 as is the case with every other graphical problem in game at the moment.
One last thing is that the FPS cap checkmark settings (and different fixed values) have no observable positive or negative impact on alttab transitions. Problems like this I would expect when the servers are experiencing problems but my ping is below 30 at all times and peak addon usage is below 3% CPU usage.
You are required another line now bassicly to disable MPO and there also one for treshold if it is 30 fps or less it bassicly wont use MPO i have that value set to 0 it can also cause chrome to freeze if its not set to 0
Anyway i am very pro keep MPO turned on and figure out what causes issue instead and fix that instead, however when it comes to freezing issue you may be at mercy of NVIDIA fixing this.
It never happened for me, but in theory if i remove treshold and set the game to background fps below 30 i could potentially see same issue depending on how Radeon drivers behave with stuff being kicked out of MPO, that is what i assume might be happening.
Just try set your background fps to something like 60 instead if its on 30 see if it has any impact.
Anyway i am not gonna share how to set MPO tresholds or other tweaks these are often just placebo or bandaids.
24H2 has been getting a lot of fixes lately including those that get rid of unnecessary display resets
I don’t think it has anything to do with hardware acceleration and optimization for windowed games. I have them on and such a problem doesn’t exist.
It might be more about background fps maybe? What is the value of it? it must be low like 30 when the game is on background there must be less for it the pc to process otherwise it will be overwhelmed and freeze.
