Alt tab wow freez Windows 11

Anyone found random input lag as well? Cant pinpoint anything or any other game at moment, just noticed the alt tabbing issue and now wondering if two are connected…

I’ve been avoiding the Windows 11 24H2 update because of this issue but now it seems the period of ‘choice’ is over and Windows Update is going to install 24H2 whether I want it or not.

I wonder what percentage of people get affected by the alt tab freeze problem after updating? If it’s a high number, this thread could soon be in for a lot more action :grimacing:

Wish me luck!

You can block it. Easily done with gpedit.msc on Pro or https://www.grc.com/incontrol.htm on Home Edition. 24H2 is a mess.

Thanks for the info. What a blast from the past! I used to use Steve Gibson’s stuff a decade or two ago.

I fought the long drawn-out fight, blocking stuff update-by-update in Windows Seven when they were trying to push Windows 8 and Windows 10 on us and it kind of broke my spirit for that sort of thing. I accepted that my PC is not 100% mine any more. Just couldn’t be arsed putting in the work for every single update.

That GRC utility does look interesting, though; I will check it out and maybe start fighting back a little once again.

I already ended up installing 24H2 (have made sure the awful new Recall spyware is disabled) and so far I’ve been lucky; no alt-tab freeze bug. They got rid of Wordpad, though, cheeky bastards! That’s where I keep my WoW notes

TL;DR: installed 24H2, no alt-tab freeze bug so far.

Few other threads here suggesting disabling MPO and so far it works for me.
You can google it and do it manually via regedit or use reg files from Nvidia:

Reviving this thread as I made the mistake of updating windows yesterday and I have this exact same problem. Interestingly, after reboot, when trying to start WoW I was unable to. I got an error message:

The CAS system was unable to initialize: tact instance creation failed. Error(16): container locked.

I had to go to my WoW installation folder and de-select “read only files” to be able to start wow again.

There seems to be a lot of issues with wow. Also, when you say “disable G-sync” where do I do this? In Windows or in WOW settings because I can’t find anything called G-sync anywhere?

I rolled back to 23H2 and all the issues are gone.

Received two 24H2 updates recently, I thought it solved the issue but I’ve just got the same problems again tabbing out and back in…

I was wondering why my game has been super unstable within the past days, when there were no problems before. Alt-tabbing totally kills everything for even minutes, sometimes crashes the whole game.

Windows 11, version 24H2
Successfully installed on ‎31/‎01/‎2025

Guess I need to learn to downgrade now. Wtf is this…

I have g-sync turned off and it does the same thing
it is disabled from the nvidia panel
but you must have enabled free or G sync from the display options, to actually enable it in the nvidia panel

any updates or fixes? sry have to pump the thread

+1 for the “incontrol” program suggestion.
I don’t like the Gibson Research Foundation, a lot of the stuff they offer is just almost clickbait, but incontrol is decent.

This is a Windows problem, happening with other applications and games also, so you should not expect a Blizzard solution.

how come it is a Windows-only problem, I play many games and WoW is the only one where I face this issue

Just to add here, a fix is to disable MPO, an easy way is shown here by nvidia https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5157/~/after-updating-to-nvidia-game-ready-driver-461.09-or-newer%2C-some-desktop-apps

here’s some other threads of it working for others, but ofc do your own research if you’re unsure

but as others have said, it is a windows issue, version 24h2 specifically, and has been acknowledged by windows, but is yet to be fixed in a public build

https://blogs.windows.com/windows-insider/2025/01/29/announcing-windows-11-insider-preview-build-27783-canary-channel/ as can be seen here,

Fixed an underlying issue which could lead to unexpected app window freezes for some people when using ALT + Tab between certain types of apps.

so hopefully they push it into an actual public build at some point, but yeah, it’s a windows issue

I got this problem after latest NVIDIA driver.

I first had to disable GSYNC in NVIDIA control panel, then enable it, then disable it. That worked ^^

Now alt tab is instant

Has anyone found a fix for this? Tried disabling gsync and the issue still keeps coming…

sometimes when it freezes it also gives an nvlddmkm error in the event viewer
it crashes the video driver… this problem
there is no solution because I never activate g-sync and it does it regardless, it’s a 24h2 problem
also disable mpo reading on reddit not worked for everyone

I noticed that if i tab out to browser, if i let the browser in fullsized, the freeze comes alot often?? If i let the browser stay in minimized, freeze dont come all the time. Oh well, I guess all we can do is wait

Which browser?
