Am I supposed to be finding WOTLK levelling so difficult?

New player to classic here.

I’ve been levelling an Enhancement Shaman for a while and the levelling experience has been confusing so far. I’ve enjoyed it for the most part, but I don’t know whether I’m doing something wrong or if it’s just how the game is.

Either I:
A) Don’t use many abilities (just Lightning Shield + a Flametongue Weapon) to conserve mana so I don’t have to drink cold milk between fights, but end up losing like 75% of my health because I miss half of my hits and the enemy gets crits for 50 hits per hit so I have to use Healing Wave 4 times and lose all my mana anyways.
OR
B) Use Searing Totem + Fire Nova with Lightning Shield and Flametongue Weapon and lose all my mana in the fight so I have to sit down for 30 seconds and just drink milk. Is this normal? Is this how classic is supposed to be played or am I undergeared or doing something else wrong?

If that is how classic is meant to be played I don’t necessarily mind but not knowing whether its supposed to be like that does bug me.

Stats:
Level 16
37 Strength
32 Agility
44 Stamina
34 Intellect
39 Spirit
347 Armour

412 HP
510 Mana

Hoping for some quick replies.
Thanks.

That’s how leveling is until you reach a certain point, yes.

I’m glad that’s the case - thanks for giving me some peace of mind lol.

Once you can dual-wield you’ll have a better time.

What weapon are you using and how many mobs are you taking on? Please don’t say you are using a shield, you need a good 2h weapon, a staff I believe to start with.

Shamans are reliant on their weapons DPS like Warriors, rogues, etc. Buy the best you can from the AH.

If you are missing often then you are fighting too high a level mobs. This ain’t retail.

You get water shield at 20 for mana.

levelin should be pretty easy, actually.

get a slow 2h weapon (atleast 2.8s swing), apply flametongue and auto with occasional flame shock/earthshock. dont waste mana on totems unless you’re chain pulling. only use lightning shield if you want to kill something quickly

I’m using the Cauldron Stirrer so yeah, 2h staff. I don’t usually fight mobs 2 levels or more above me and never pull more than 2 mobs at a time.

Thanks for telling me about water shield, looking forward to getting that spell.

I try to be more careful now and accepted that classic is different to retail and you actually have to think about what you’re doing lmao. So far, it’s working great!

The one of the biggest changes from TBC to Wrath was the main stat, it’s agility in Wrath and was strength.

I also think your staff is a bit out of date and needs replacing. The weapon is by far the best DPS increase when replaced.

I used to play on Golemagg so I sent you a care package. Only one level now until water shield.

Thats not normal at all.

When i was levelling my shaman, i was crushing mobs in 3 to 5 melee hits.

What professions do you have? Are you using a gear planner, and making sure you get all your bis pieces each level? Are you using consumables, food buffs, world buffs when you can, and sharpening stones?

I level a Priest and goodness it was slow… Very very slow… Anyways soon as I hit level 70 and got some gear I was nearly 1 shotting stuff… The game shifts at a higher level, by alot!..
I used this addon and it helped me out alot -
What’s Training?
It tells you what level you learn stuff by adding an extra tab in the your spell book.

Do people really do this? Full consumables, camping world buffs and full BIS throughout the levelling process? I’ve been playing this game for over 15 years and I’ve never done that once.

I think people who do that are a tiny minority, like fractions.

The only class I’ve found to be enjoyable from level 1 to 40 is warlock because you never go low hp or mana.

Yeah it’s pretty good the warlock, the only issue I had with a lock was the voidwalker, it holds about as much aggro as the random vegetation in the zone you’re questing in.

Other than that I enjoyed most classes tbh, currently enjoying my hunters on horde and alliance

You don’t need all this lmao. This ain’t vanilla leveling, you will replace your gear every 5-10 levels or less if you spam dungeons.

Yeah, before 40 threat was a problem.
After 40 warlock became the tank and the imp was your mana battery (in classic, might have changed since then).

I mean, if you arent putting in the effort, why bother playing? Just go roll some dice in the corner.

Gearing is inportant, even while levelling. Every 2nd level you need to get a new list of your bis list, go to each dungeon to get it (i used to do deadmines gdkps for the sword), work out your correct stat caps, soft caps, hard caps, top caps, ensure you have everything enchanted too.

When i ran BFD, i always inspected and kicked the slackers who didnt have all their gear enchanted or didnt bring world buffs. The rate of xp gain is super important, you dont want to go to a dungeon for 1h, when you could instead speed clear it in 30m at the cost of an hour extra prep time.

Another good tip is to find levelling partners to speed through quests. Although you need to be careful not to find slackers or noobs, so i suggest quizzing them and conducting an interview about their parses, logs, life outside of the game, and their pronouns.

Alternatively you could just keep your weapons up to date with your level.

With Enhancement shamans you always need good weapons.

I focus my time on the task and little to no time on worrying about gearing, I might eat a food buff sure, if I have scrolls I will use them, if I’m in orgrimmar and I happen to get a world buff, cool.

But I have never spent any meaningful amount of time trying to get the best item or to have consumables, I feel like you end up wasting more time messing around with gear when you could just be levelling. I worry about gear optimisation when I’m max level. The only exception to this is levelling my raiding character in a new expansion, like WOTLK where I solo’d Botanica and was 80 on day 1.

I levelled my 3rd 80 Warrior recently (from 1), the only gear it had was heirlooms and whatever I picked up along the way, nothing from AH, I did no dungeon groups, I solo’d all world quests in Outland/Northrend. Gearing the 3rd warrior to be good enough to level in Botanica 70-80 was way beyond being worth the effort, so I didn’t.

Actually, I’m intentionally gimping myself to avoid the leveling being too easy. It’s still too easy, but the thought that it could be even easier disgusts me.
