Greeting everyone.
So i recently switched my RTX 3060 oc 12gb for a RX 7900xt and im having serious issues while playing only wow. im progging on queen mythic and just did my first raid today and i got sub 30 fps with everything in minimum.
As soon as log in wow when i first changed the gpu i didnt saw the fps go up, stayed the same as my RTX 3060, with gpu usage around 60% and cpu at 10%, no heating probs or any other thing. i put some load on the gpu by raising the resolution to 4k and it did get the gpu and cpu usage up to normal numbers, 30 cpu and 90 gpu and when i lowered them back i had a staggering 180fps in Dornogal.
As soon we pulled queen the fps dropped from 180 to 60 and sometimes even dipping to 20´s while gpu usage was at 60 )even reached lower numbers) and 10% cpu.
i had no similar issues with 3060, i have i7 12700k and 32gb ram 850w psu.
and the weird part is that this only happens in wow all other games i tried run perfect and i was wondering if i should go back to nvidea? i even got every setting in low and i saw no noticeble improvement, even lower then with the 3060 wich is crazy imo.
thanks all in advance
Performance Issues with AMD GPU in World of Warcraft
System Specifications:
- CPU: i7 12700k
- GPU: AMD RX7900 xt
- Previous GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3060 oc 12gb
- RAM: 32gb 600 MHtz
- Motherboard: MSI Z690 Torpedo
- Storage: NVME m.2 1T
Overview: After upgrading to an AMD GPU from an NVIDIA RTX 3060, I encountered significant performance issues while playing World of Warcraft, particularly during high-demand scenarios such as boss fights in Mythic raids. While the AMD GPU initially showed promising performance with high utilization (90%+) and FPS (200+) in less demanding environments, I experienced drastic drops in frame rates (down to 20-40 FPS) and low utilization (30-60% for both CPU and GPU) during intense encounters.
Troubleshooting Steps Taken:
- Resolution Changes: I increased the game resolution to 1440p, which temporarily boosted GPU utilization, suggesting that the GPU was capable of handling higher loads. However, reverting to normal resolution still resulted in significant performance drops during boss fights.
- Settings Adjustments: I lowered all graphical settings to their minimum values in an attempt to alleviate performance issues. Despite these adjustments, I observed no meaningful improvement in frame rates or utilization during complex encounters.
- Monitoring Performance: I utilized AMD’s Adrenalin software to monitor FPS and utilization metrics, confirming that GPU and CPU usage remained low during critical moments in the game, despite the high demands of the boss fights.
- Comparison with Previous GPU: I noted that my previous NVIDIA RTX 3060 provided a more stable gaming experience without the drastic performance drops observed with the AMD GPU. This indicated that the issue might not solely be related to CPU bottlenecks, as the CPU utilization remained low during intense gameplay.
- Consideration of Clean Installation: Given the persistent issues, I am considering a clean installation of Windows to eliminate any potential software conflicts or remnants from the previous NVIDIA setup that might be affecting the performance of the AMD GPU.
Conclusion: If a clean installation does not resolve the performance issues, I am contemplating returning the AMD GPU in favor of the NVIDIA RTX 3060. Despite the lower overall performance in other games, the NVIDIA card has proven to be better suited for my primary game, World of Warcraft, providing a smoother and more enjoyable gaming experience.
Lots of text but the answer is very simple;
You are heavily CPU-limited in WoW, thus the GPU change did nothing for you in these scenarios.
For example, a 9800X3D which is ALOT faster than your 12k, will drop below 60 on mythic queen now and then (but mostly around 100).
If you want high FPS in raids and in general mass player/NPC encounters, then the only way is to upgrade to the said CPU.
On my 5800X3D with a 4090 FE (GPU doesn’t really matter in raids like i said), i had drops below 30 FPS on some 30man HC bosses.
Below 40 on 20man.
This is to be expected since WoW relies heavily on a single (main)-CPU-thread.
Addons and WAs can make it alot worse because they run on the same thread.
i hear you, but why is performing worst then with the RTX 3060? thats my main issue, yes i used ddu to remove the nvidea drivers
I can’t really say why that is.
Have you tried switching to DX11 instead of 12?
That seems to run better on AMD GPUs.
Nvidia runs better on DX12 in WoW.
Also make sure your renderscale is set to 100% and nothing else, not 99% or 101% or whatever.
Renderscale is broken, for over half a year now and no fix in sight.
Also remember that no try (raid bossfight) is the same, so your FPS will be different every time.
Even the grp setup, classes in the raid, will make a performance difference since some spells are less optimized.
This is why you can’t really benchmark a MMO like WoW.
Ive tried the DX11 and it was worse, and all the other settings and addons and everyting is the same even the fight im comparing is the same and as i said i didnt saw this lower fps drop in my old gpu where i had 10 to 15% cpu utilisation and 100% gpu now i get the same cpu utilization with gpu on 60 and sometimes as low as 30% and the cpu stays at 10%.
when i used the renderscale the cpu and gpu usage was in expected numbers and when i tunned the renderscale back to normal both cpu and gpu remained using decent %´s, only when i pulled the boss they go from 180 fps to 60 imidiatly and sometimes dipping to about 30 fps and gpu utilization dipping sometimes to 40%
And wouldnt i get more performance lowering settings? even lower then in my old gpu with no noticeble improvement
Unless these settings reduce load on the CPU, nope, none at all.
It will only decrease load on the GPU, which is obviously not your problem.
Of course your CPU load will stay the same but your GPU load will go way down with a stronger GPU.
Your CPU cannot “feed” your GPU enough frames to render to make it go higher in load.
Would you upgrade your CPU and thus increase FPS in this CPU-limited game, your GPU would also have to work harder cause it will be getting more FPS prepared by the CPU.
But what were your FPS before the GPU switch?
How low were the biggest drops like on pull with bl?
Something else… is your RAM running with XMP enabled?
As i checked with chatbot i had 180 fps in dornogal and 90% on gpu and 30% on cpu, so its seems that the cpu can go higher then the 10-20% and consequencially so goes the GPU and i think that takes the cpu bottleneck out of equation.
My fps in dornogal where around 100 and in raid i never payed much attention because the gameplay was smooth and fast and its not happening right now.
today i cant even reach 100 fps in dornogal, ive tries fiddling with the settings in game and in adrenelin and tried to use to raise the resolution again but it didnt work this time, im getting desperate and thinking in returning the gpu and going back to nvidia, but fººk nvidia and theyre prices and market
but also dont think the gpu is the problem because it runs other games in perfection so i am very unwilling to get an ultra over priced 12gb nividia to turn out to be the same
right now im at 77 fps in dornogal its ridiculous i was at 120fps a couple of hours ago
update so i reinstalled adrenelin and got imidiatly back to 100 fps i can swear its something to do with amd
and im back to 80’s
So what’s the timeline here with your GPU replacement, did you have a WoW break inbetween and came back after a patch or more?
That could also explain the FPS drops, performance has gotten somehow worse with the last patches i feel.
Also addons and WAs need to be up to date and break especially after a patch.
Next week with the S2 patch, addons will break and we might get some really big performance issues until these addons are updated.
This is to be expected, sadly.
Sometimes it takes weeks till the performance is back to a “normal” level.
Well to be real, AMD isn’t the first choice when it comes to WoW, never has been.
There’s still people in the AMD driver thread posting with problems.
Yeah doesn’t make sense if you also play other games.
The more players the lower your FPS.
Log in in the morning or at night and your FPS will be through the roof and even flying fast over Dornogal won’t be as laggy.
Log in during prime time, or after a patch, your FPS will be down the drain
Btw i would not recommend going higher than settings 7 or 8 for drawing distance and environmental details, this is hard on the CPU, the more meshes to render the more load on the CPU.
You can crank up the GPU demanding setting though (except raytraced shadows, these will cripple your FPS with many players too, since each player draws a shadow and this will also increase CPU load).
I have RT shadows off with my 4090 because it’s just not worth the increased stuttering and lower FPS (GPU load consequently drops cause of increased CPU-limit).
So my guild stopped raiding and i changed the GPU and continued 2 weeks after, same boss as i said same conditions, same settings, everyting is the same.
ive put everything in 1 and didnt got a single diference from 10.
Yes if the windows format doesnt work i will have to replace unfortunately, i play 95% wow so no point in having a gpu for other games i hardly play.
i was at 80 then i reinstalled the amd drivers, then got 120 and came back to 80 again, no change. -40 fps is a lot
and as i told in the inicial post i was at 19:00 server time with 180 fps in dornogal, with hight cpu and gpu usage and as soon as the boss was pulled it jinxed it all up
Even the amd overlay bugs lots of times just in wow
WoW nowadays has a lot of bugs and performance regressions. Give it a few years and it will have higher requirements than the second Cyberpunk game.
