This is more of a PSA as AMD have just released a driver update.
When installing video drivers, or updating them, the first subsequent launch of WoW will hang on a blank display. If you click anywhere you’ll get an OS notification that the process is hanging with the option to wait or exit.
If this happens to you - wait - don’t exit and after a period of time 5+ minutes - the game will start up. After this it will be fine every time you start the game until you next update/install video drivers.
I’m using an AMD 6700XT and have seen this behaviour every time I update or reinstall drivers. Usually I forget and end up searching around on the forums/looking at my system to work out what’s wrong. So this post is just a ‘recent’ PSA in case anyone experiences this in the coming days after updating to the latest AMD drivers.
I don’t know if this also happens with Nvidia drivers.
Had a similar issue with my 6800XT. It seems that there was an issue with dx12.
The only way I could bypass this was to go into game settings for wow, under install location there is a box for “additional command line arguments” and then input -d3d11.
This will force your game to launch using directX11. Resolved the issue for me.
After my recent software update, I now have artifacts ( random white lines ) whenever I must over random things. It comes and goes and I hope this is a software issue and not my GPU dying xD
This happens for me too (7900XT) every time I update my graphics card driver. But it seems that Blizzard do not care at all about AMD users, as they certainly don’t fix any of the issues we have.
This is not necessarily a drive related issue. In some case, Battle.net and Blizzard are scanning your system (system check) just to find out if your system is up to date, has the correct software drivers, video card etc. This scan will take a while but as you’ve said do not close anything or reboot your system. Allow the scan to follow through and give it time. This is NOT an every login type occurrence. Purely random. Once the scan has bene completed, you will be allowed to login. However if something has bene found out of date, you get a warning/error on your login screen saying something like your video card is out dated etc.
It’s not random its very specific and it does not affect Nvidia. Up until a few months back I ran a RTX 3070 and never had this issue in the 3 years I had the card, before that a RTX 2070 and never had this issue either.
Now I run a 7900XT and have this issue every time I either install a new driver for my card, or reinstall WoW.
K so it’s been a while since I’ve used the Nvidia card and drivers. so it’s good to know that others have seem to isolate the issue. But, this hesitation as I call it hasn’t worried me… Mind you my card is on the cusp of being obsolete so I’m babying it as much as I can.
