Hiya
I got a bnet contact from someone yesterday … they weren’t on my friends list and it showed no name. I was unable to reply.
I asked in guild about it, and it happened to be one of my guild members (they were just asking for info regarding a raid) - they didn’t really understand how they’d managed to contact me as I wasn’t in their bnet friends list either (and neither of us had one in pending waiting to be accepted).
It was of course lucky that I managed to work out who it was, and it wasn’t anything dodgy … but is this a bug or is there a setting I can set to avoid this happening in future?
Hey Poisonenvy,
Do you perhaps have a Community active in the Blizzard App, that has both of you in it? It is possible to start a chat with someone that is in the same Community as you, without adding them as a friend.
Have a few seconds to spare? Let me know how I’m doing!
I do. I’d forgotten about it as it was set up when they first came out. But he’s not in it. I’m pretty sure if he were, it would have shown his name at the start of the chat … instead it just showed []
Having said that … although it showed [] instead of his bnet id in in-game bnet chat … from the social tab of the Blizzard Launcher it does show his actual id.
When I click on his profile it gives me the option to send a friend request or, on a drop down, to invite to a group … giving the one community I’m in as an option.
Which I’m assuming means confirmation he’s in neither group.
My Profile is set to show to public … so perhaps I should change this to a different setting? I’d always assumed that just meant anyone could send me a friend request (which I was free to ignore, etc) not that anyone could send me a message even if they weren’t on a friends list … am I wrong?
The only other thing I can think of, is that as we’re both in the same guild, and the guild interface is now closely linked to the community interface (with a bunch of inherited flaws due to that) perhaps there’s some glitch that allows this to happen between guild members?
I had this happen some months ago, turned out to be a bug with an AddOn. Try updating your chat AddOns, it should fix it.
Edit: For me it was PhanxChat.
I’m not sure how it could have been. I’ll have to check to see if I have any addon that checks my chat … but that shouldn’t have allowed someone who I don’t have on my friends list to contact me via bnet. In theory an addon could have corrupted the incoming (or outgoing) chat … but the fact that it shouldn’t have occurred in the first place I don’t think can be blamed on an addon.

There are a few settings, one of which for example is:
Receive private chat messages from friends only
If enabled, you can receive private chat messages only from your friends. This setting may not apply to chat messages sent in-game.
