Any plans on having longer character names?

Will there be an update to increase how many letters we can use in our character names? Atm we can only use 12 letters it would be really great if we could use up to 20 letters in our character names.
It would also be good if you could increase character slots up to 100 characters.

I think it’s important to have a limited number of Characters for our names to

  1. be aesthetically pleasing to look at
  2. avoid trashy sentences.

I agree that more Characters per account should be a thing though (although I’m not yet affected by the limit)

It shouldn’t increase beyond 15 characters I think. Even that’s too long, honestly.

But if you get TRP addon, you can set a proper name for your toon there, complete with surname and first name, easily visible for every fellow RPer.

In terms of the character number increase is to allow it to “catch up” with the number of classes there are. It was fifty because there were (originally!) ten classes, so a player could (if wanted!) do one of each class on five realms.

But then again, they said that you could do fifty characters on a single realm now btw.

See:
https://wowpedia.fandom.com/wiki/Patch_8.1.5#Characters

However if you go with the dynamics of classes, and the fact it’s twelve classes. A simple mathematics of 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 = 48 and you got two spare characters where there’s NOT four but five of the class in your account. Sixty character slots give the people with an OCD about always having exactly the same number of characters as there are classes on several realms a means to do as with classic WoW but with sixty characters instead. Keep it fifty on WoW Classic. Make it sixty on retail

I’d like one named ‘St. Mary’s Church in the hollow of white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio near the red cave’

Alas it’s the name of the train station, and that’s just weird.

Why did you tip people off? Now if I’m not fast enough, I’ll have to go with XoxollĂ„nfÀßrpwllgwyngyllgögĂȘrychwyrndrĂłbwyllllantysilÏögĂłgĂČgochxdqtxoxo :frowning:

I’d love to have longer names and allow spaces in the name, but it seems technically it’s not possible as the game sees server+name to be unique identifier and for some odd (or old) reason it does not allow spaces in it. If you send an in game mail to your alt in different server, the name is “ServerName-Charactername” without spaces in it. Changing that to allow spaces in the names would require quite a big change in the core system, I think.

Anyway, would like to have a character names like ‘Nac Mac Feegle’ or ‘Crazy Catman’

I think it would look a mess to have longer names for the reasons most have highlighted.

Having a proper surname option might be better or freeing up names more regularly when they aren’t on active accounts.

There doesn’t need to be a character cap increase imo. Just allow surnames!
