AFAIK the game did launch with PvP servers as you say. I meant that their addition was decided later in the development process, but not after the game’s launch. Sorry if my previous post was unclear!
Pretty much this. While the game at launch did have PvP, PvP as a whole was basically slapped onto the game pretty late in the development process. The game wasn’t really built up from the ground with PvP (and, particularly, WPvP) in mind. And it shows.
wPvP in MMORPG is not really about competitive fairness because the core idea of the game is the development of your character. There are so many different talents, gear and ways to develop your character, it’s impossible to make it 100% balanced/fair.
Chess for example is a fair pvp game because both players have the exactly the same tools to play with. In Chess the only real difference between the players is their skill and it’s always 1v1.
In that sense, it’s not griefing when someone ganks other players because most likely fights will never be fair anyways. They just want to play with you - maybe you don’t want to play this kind of game with them but stop call it grieifng.
Griefing is when someone goes out of their way to make the game unplayable for you. Just because you can’t do the quest you planned to do does not mean the game is unplayable. Sometimes an area can be dominated by the opposite faction and that makes it hard/impossible to do something in that area but guess what? There are other areas in the game where you can go or you connect with other people and they come to help you.
wPvP in MMORPG’s is just another way of expressing yourself - another layer of immersion. Is your character an honorable being or a villain? Are you well known among the opposite faction and for what? How do you deal with the things that other players do to you?
My main is lvl60 since over a year ago and i stopped raiding because i got the items i wanted and that was the moment i could finally start playing the real game. Leveling and gearing up was just means for the purpose. I play Alliance because there is more horde on my server.
The only understandable reason people don’t play on PvP servers for me is because they are bad. Take it easy, it’s not a crime being bad, almost everyone is bad at some games. Some people are old and not used to play with more than 3 key bindings. Some people don’t even have awareness of their surrounding because they play without sound, zoomed in camera and never change the angle, like every time they get ganked it’s a complete surprise. It seems obvious that such players would not enjoy pvp servers.
Or maybe I want to be able to alt tab or answer a phone call without having to worry about getting backstabbed by a rogue. Or just play in peace without the added tension of WPvP while farming.
Who does not have a 2nd monitor in 2021?
Do you think i never afk on pvp servers? Maybe you are worrying too much… and even if your char dies while you are afk, is that such a dramatic experience? You could also log out if you are really in a bad spot to afk… I don’t think that this is the real reason for people to choose pve over pvp servers.
World of peacecraft - classic farmsimulator. People are ofc free to play this game however they like.
You know, there are even people who only play this game as a economy simulator, the only thing they do is play the auction house with a lvl1 char.
I do. In fact, most of the people I know do.
You know, it never ceases to amaze me how some people are so hellbent on telling other players what they are or are not supposed to like.
Here we are, in a thread where a person who’s dissatisfied with their PvP experience and is asking how things are on PvE servers, and yet we have morons like you or Zmug feeling the need to come here and tell the person in question that they’re not supposed to dislike what they dislike.
You’re free to go on and enjoy your PvP servers for as long as you want - just in the same way people are free to enjoy PvE servers and for reasons that need not be your same own. If the only way for your brain to compute those reasons is “they’re bad”, maybe you should do something for your brain instead of trying to do something for other players.
So explaining why I like PvP server and making statements against some arguments form pve-players is me telling others what they should like and dislike? I even said everyone is free to play the game how they want. selecting the right server is quite an important decision and it would be sad if people go on pve server just because some forum guys are crying about getting griefed while they almost classify everthing as griefing.
I am glad you present another reason why people play on pve servers beside being bad. They are also neurotic, they get bad emotions very quickly, get easily offended. That’s why getting ganked is such a dramatically bad experience for them. They don’t see it as an invitation to play, they think it’s a personal attack.
This is not what OP asked in the first place. They come from a PvP server so they obviously had the opportunity to make up their mind about whether they like it or not - and it sounds like they don’t. I’m not sure of why you feel your attempt to defend PvP servers is somehow pertinent to the thread in the first place.
I’m not even going to answer the rest, because whatever I could say you’d feel the need to twist into something you can present as a negative, and frankly I don’t see how that concerns this thread other than being an indirect way of trying to insult OP.
It’s a forum, that means people can comment even when it’s not directly answering OP’s question exactly. Zalanji, forum moderator. you know that the OP might be able to speak himself but hopefully you represent him well.
I don’t get offended easily. But what do you mean they don’t see ganking as an invitation to play, but rather as a personal attack?
I must say I’ve never thought to myself after getting ganked: “boy that was fun, he’s just corpsecamping me to get me to play the game more”. Or am I just really not understanding what you mean?
Getting ganked is never fun, and has nothing to do with how fast one gets offended.
Leveling in P1 on an imbalanced a/h ratio pvp server I got ganked by 2-5 times the amount of alliance players and it pissed me off an insane amount.
I did transfer, not to a PvE server but a better balanced PvP server.
I’ve always preferred PvP servers, just to have the option of being able to kill somebody, but I find myself rarely ever taking advantage of it.
World PvP is almost never fair, luckily my server now favors my faction so I don’t have to consider transfering for now.
Edit: PvP is fun to a certain degree. Getting ganked doesn’t fall under PvP to me. Camping a lvl 40 on a 60 I don’t see as PvP, it’s just pathetic and shameful when your opponent has absolutely zero chance of winning.
Getting back to the topic, for me personally going from PVP to PVE was a very good decision. I found myself enjoying the game much more.
Saying that people don’t play on PvP servers because they’re bad is a gross generalization and, as such, a fallacy. Whilst I agree that PvP does require you to be skillful and switched on and moreso than PvE (at least outside of raids and heroics), it doesn’t mean that PvEers are necessarily worse than PvPers at the game.
I consider myself an average player, not the worst but very far from the best. But the reason I chose PvE this time around was not my skill, or lack thereof. What I wanted from Classic was to revisit the old stomping grounds, to enjoy the old world at my own pace without disruptions, and to play in a relaxed rather than tense, suspenseful way. In addition, I don’t have the patience anymore to put up with the competitive and edgy behavior that many people on PvP servers exhibit (obviously not all, but enough to be very noticable). And also, PvP tends to bring out a nasty side of myself that I’d rather keep in check.
What I’m saying is to each their own. A person’s play preference is not necessarily an indication of their skill, but more of their personality and their goals in the game.
Getting ganked is not exactly the same as getting corpse camped. Ganking means attacking other players. Attacking other players is also a risk because you never know how many tricks they have, how prepared they are or if they have friends near by. Ofc some less honorable players can minimize the risk by only attacking low level players but they also minimize their own fun like this.
It’s way more satisfying to kill players with a higher level and/or better gear or even multiple players!
It happened a lot of times that i got ganked and the attacker got himself killed. I even bait players into ganking me by making myself look vulnerable while I anticipate the gank. When something like this happens i will not camp this player but i will give him another opportunity to gank me again. So getting ganked can be a lot of fun. Even when a ganker catches me offguard and kills me it can be fun because of the whole story that can result from this. I had small rivalries where we killed each other over and over again - if this guy would not have been there I would have just done some boring farming. Even if we fight against each other we are still playing the game with each oher, we are the other ones content. Also one gank can result in epic battles where both factions get more and more people involved.
Still this does not have to be the end of the story. A camper like this would be content for me, I would travel all the way to his camping spot only for him because it looks like this guy wants to pvp but can’t find any worthy opponents. Also helping a low level player is kinda nice and maybe he will be able to help me in the future. This camper just enforces the server community, just ask in chat if someone wants to help you with this camper, a way of connecting people. kind of the point of the game…
you are right. Me saying that they are bad is obviously a very generalized statement and also not very meaning full since bad is a relative. That’s why I also added the disclaimer to take it easy. I also got called “bad” sometimes, no big deal because it’s true that I am bad if you compare me to players that are better than me. I don’t think that’s its really that big of an insult, it’s just the truth.
No problem man and no harm done. We can often get swept up in arguments and either word things in a strange way, or misinterpret things others have written. I hope my post to you didn’t come off as an attack or something btw as it was not my intent.
I will say though that world PvP does indeed encourage us to play better, and while it may not be the sole factor in skill, it does add to it. And world PvP does indeed create strong memories! I’m glad I experienced it back then, and even though I don’t want it at this stage in my life I would encourage people to try it out if they haven’t done so, provided they can find a solid community of friends and avoid any potential toxicity.
Owner was right to be mad here. Premades aren’t made to carry weak players.
And I’m not even native english speaker.
