I really dislike SL’s change to apply aoe target number cap on many class abilities.
Some class abilities, e.g. Mage flamestrike, Druid starfall, have unlimited target, while others, e.g. Warrior whirlwind, Hunter multishot can only hit 5 targets max in SL.
This creates huge difference in spec aoe damage. In MDI, those fire mages burst up to 100k dps on mass pulls, also big unholy aoe because of epidemic has unlimited targets.
There is no way for other classes (e.g. warrior) to reach that number even if you have 300 item level, simply because all your aoe abilities are target capped.
Of course, very few group would do those crazy pulls like MDI. But the main problem of aoe target cap is that “It is not fun”.
I want my abilities to pull more than 5 mobs in solo content, questing, or old raid runs. I want to be able to chain pull hundred mobs in old content and 1 whirlwind them down, instead of my abilities only hit 5 mobs everytime.
If Blizzard’s intention is to balance all specs’ max aoe damage, then AOE total damage cap should stay, instead limiting aoe abilities’ target numbers.
AOE target number cap makes no sense and it is anti-fun.
The whole target cap idea was BS who ever came up with it,1 spec is capped 1 is not?what was the f point of this nonsense, thank god my sub runs out in a week, not going to pay for this unbalanced crap game
It does make sense if done correctly. If every class had unlimited AoEs, it would be difficult to make them not feel too same-y. Just making those abilities that are more capped then others like whirlwind deal more damage per hit to balance things out should suffice.
That said, what we need is for channelled AoEs to come back, like Volley, Blizzard, Rain of fire, or hurricane. The BS they replaced them with just makes AoEing feel awkward and terrible and puts a huge hole in the toolkit of those classes.
