Hi guys!
So I have came back to WoW at the start of Dragonflight launch and it’s been a blast so far. Kudos to the devs!
I created character named Gaycow and he is pretty geared and never had any issues, people love my name and I get random whispers in towns saying I made their day.
Anyways, I decided to roll a DPS and try out evoker. I named him Gayfurry (inspired by character i saw named Lolifurry). As soon as I entered Valdrakken at max level and started +2 keystone, I got DC and mandatory rename due to inappropriate name. I though okay, maybe its furry? But furry isn’t offensive, it’s a pretty chill community (as far as I know).
So I renamed to Gaywoker (get it. Evoker. Gay. Gevoker.) Fast forward 3 days after that, I get flagged for offensive name renaming again.
So my question is. Is blizzard gm/support just blatantly homophobic or how Gay evoker is offensive?
The reporting system for names, and Blizzard’s reaction to names, is player-based. Blizzard don’t go round searching for names they think are offensive. Someone (probably several someones) has reported you to Blizzard claiming your character name is offensive, and THEN they have looked at it and decided it could be construed that way.
Being offensive is partly down to whoever sees it - someone saw the name and felt it was inappropriate (either that or someone simply didn’t like you and reported you on the offchance they could cause an issue for you); and partly down to the creator.
In this case … firstly I’d suggest that if you keep with the current naming convention, expect to continue to get flagged and, potentially, a ban. Because Blizzard will see it as a way of trying to circumvent their renaming flag.
And secondly - your character name isn’t just related to you but the people that see it. Like if someone sprayed offensive words on an advertising hoarding on the side of a house … it could refer to the advert, it could refer to the occupants of the house, or it could be considered to be directed at the people reading it.
I would also suggest that, considering your current character name, you must know that your character names are borderline and you’re potentially just looking for a reaction … perhaps you created them “for a laugh” but then again, perhaps you didn’t.
It’s also worth noting that, back when they had a list of character names that weren’t acceptable, names comprising multiple common words were on that list. For example Tight Hole and Gay Cow.
In short … of course they don’t have some sort of company-wide policy in this respect. Blizzard don’t go scrolling through lists of names to pick on because they just don’t have the time or the staff to do that. Blizzard only act on character names if they’ve been reported by other players.
Keep it up and you’ll be sanctioned sooner or later, I can tell you that.
Just come up with a decent name, that is actually PEGI12 friendly and adhering to the naming policy and code of conduct. Your forum-name as well as the named ones are on the edge or over it. Grab a mirror and start reflecting, instead of insinuating that Blizzard support is homophobic.
No. Blizzard react because players deem you offensive.
Your creating a meme out of someones sexuality. Yes. Homosexual players are gonna take offense to you naming ur characters, espically as the word has built up a rather negative stigma as a insult
