Are professions dead?

I wish they would realize that not everybody wants to spend their game time locked up in instances. There is a whole world outside of instances that could really do with some love and attention. I find it sad the way they keep trying to railroad us all down the same one path game play wise.

Each proffesion still has things that you can make money with, but alot of proffesions simply arent as useful anymore as they used to be. Alchemy for example, every class has self heals and takes so little dmg so potions dont much anymore. Blacksmith and leather working probably have become the most useless compared to before. The gear you can create with it pretty much only have transmog uses. Sure there are things like leather barding and stirrups wich people might buy for farming stuff like herbs. But if you have the sky golem and a tanking specc you dont need those anyway. And with enchanting the basic enchants will earn you the most for faster gathering

Letherworking? What you want do with this proffesion? All items are under material cost. They are nwo only for transmgo purpose and transmogs sell really bad, because game is dying.

My personal opinion is that only Alchemy/Herbalism and to some extent Enchanting and JC has any use atm.

Professions overall are not worth the material cost, and they don’t feel like they have much use. Alchemy is good though, but Enchanting and JC has taken a beating, and everything else has felt dead for years. I hate it, and think the profession system needs a serious overhaul.

i’m at work and cannot look for links but ideally here goes the office michael meme “no god please no”

Engineering has nothing to sell unless you’re mega lucky and drop the mogul, the rest of the stuff are crap.
BS is the same, the follower equipment are a niche and the good gear is now bop because it’s a death row crime gearing up by buying a piece. Same for LW.
Tailoring has bags, but it’s a slow market, same for Jwc.
Inscription gets useless 2 weeks into the raid.

Professions with real market option are only the usual suspects, alchemy, mining, herbalism.

I wish blizz would stop be scared by boe gear and embrace it. We will play even if geared!

Enchanting works well, too. You can turn any unwanted blue or epic item into substantially more gold than you get from selling it, and you can usually make even more profit by selling enchants.

Some professions also still have use for the character, like those engineering goggles, the alchemy trinket (not that great for all specs), etc.

Buff scrolls sell for a lot due to M+.

Blacksmithing gives you 8 hours for the monel-hardened stirrups and hoof-plates you craft, but, annoyingly, you permanently lose these buffs if you enter a BG in PvP.

Other than crafting those items, the only point I can see to Blacksmithing is to farm Normal BoD raid for the Breath of Bwonsamdi so you can craft ilvl 415 gear. That’s pretty niche, because you need to spend a lot of time or a lot of gold to get the required mats / skill level and raiders generally spend their non-raid time making gold to spend on stuff they need for the actual raiding. Look at how much gold Method spent getting their alts to max Blacksmithing in prep for Mythic BoD - that’s beyond most players.

The problem with Blacksmithing (as with related professions) is that the hard-core players hate it when casual players get “free” high ilvl gear. If you could just grind every-day PvE to get the mats and skill level for crafting your own set of 415 ilvl plate armour and weapon / shield, the Mythic raiders would get very mad indeed. Even if it took 10,000 hours of casual gameplay to be able to make your own ilvl 415 gear, they’d still get mad.

The professions are in effect permanently gated by the fact that hard-core players don’t like non hard-core players having good gear.

And i suppose that those are not the same hard-core players who throw free gear at noobs by selling boost run all the time, am i right?

Yeah, personally i would let them go mad. Probably the smallest playerbase, especially when most mythic players don’t seem to care so much what others can get and get their pride and feeling of achievement from their own skill and achievements.

The social media effect - small number of angry people spam forums to get their way. It’s already bad enough with the complaints about 385 ilvl rewards from Emissaries.

What? the legion proffesion system is still there. i still got to grind 3 ranks from the proffesion. Some trough world quests that only have spawned like 3 times since the start of bfa and some from containers from emmisary exalted chests

That is a bit of a contradiction there. Why would ores and herbs sell well if their connected professions are dead?

You don’t need 100k ore to max level your blacksmithing

It is one thing having to do a WQ for rank three and ENTIRELY different thing having to do a whole quest chain in order to learn the recipe in the first place…

If you are after gold you don’t need alchemy as you already profit from herbalism. Add mining and you are good to go. BS uses ore, LW uses skins but their main usage is to for example mass-craft junk for disenchanting or mass scrapping. Crafting profession used for junk dumping. Still a rare mount or BoE drop can undermine the income from gathering professions…

Ion Hazzikostats answered that “question” on like last Q&A. High ilvl gear from profession undermines PvE content so they never can’t make profession gear be on par with it and thus most of crafted gear has ilvl lower than current end game challenging ilvl content. 415 are also time gated for that very reason and are BoP. Sadly we aren’t in the days of odd stats and resistances in which crafted gear didn’t had such problem yet it wasn’t BiS nor trash.

I wish I could disenchant Ion Halitosis.
Might get a half decent shard and some residuum.

The game is very generous with good gear now. You get an ilvl 400 from a world boss, 385 items from world events, 410+ for doing one +10 a week, etc.

What are your expectations regarding gear? That you can get heroic or mythic raiding gear from professions? I feel that would be the wrong direction to go for the game. I’m all for more craftable BoEs, but they should be below heroic raid level gear at least.

Professions should have their own mini-game like pet battles with inter-professional rewards so an enchanter could earn a hoof/speed enchant or a leatherworker could earn a stronger kind of flying carpet (a flying sofa).

Yeah 8.1 professions are far better than 8.0, even dare to say better than all of Legion. Professions are relevant and powerful in their current iteration, rather than everyone stacking Alchemy for the 2h flask.

This is, on my opinion, good example how he is not really well aware of MMORPGs outside of his own experience and point of view. There is other MMORPG’s where you get THE best gear from crafting not as drops. Pve content on those games stays interesting because it is good and people want to do it, and offers other things that people really want to get.

WoWs weakness has been always (again, on my opinion) too much focusing on making gear as reward instead of tool to do fun things. This leads into this hamsterwheel where your “rewards” lose their value on every patch and you have to start your process over. Keeping players playing but not necessarily offering very good quality or varied content.
