Are there any YT or Twitch channels that promote RP?

So with Perroys recent thread about what we can do about trying to curb the demise of AD, it got me thinking. Are there any Youtube or Twitch channels that we could put our support behind that do show of the good sides of Roleplay? And if not, would it be worth starting one up maybe? Or even starting up a few different channels to show of different areas and view points of the wonders that are AD roleplay.

I don’t think most people would want to waste time watching someone play make-believe in a video game tbh.

I’ve actually been debating on bringing back AD Talks with quite a few changes towards it. I use to live stream a conversation around roleplay, and then archive it up onto youtube for others to see.

Why? well it is getting pretty sick and tiring see other content creators do the exact opposite or just do nothing at all and be a bystander when it comes to harassing other peoples enjoyment of the game. Giving them some false perspective on what the realm is all about, it’d definetly be a breath of fresh air to show a brighter side to things again and perhaps inspire people to give it a go themselves too.

People watch others do make believe with dnd, why not a video game? there’s an audience for a lot of things the way I see it. It’s just the way you present it that matters.

Well, RP in WoW is incredibly niche. Maybe it could work, but it would gather a few followers at best imo.

There are a suprising number of roleplay channels and broadcasts. However,I’m unsure if there are any targeting WOW specifically.

It’s not something that lends itself to a streaming or video medium (do you zoom in on and read out the text chat? Put on voices for other characters?).

I know there’s some videos on how to roleplay, just not longplay examples of it in real time.

A direct video of rp is only one way to promote RP on Youtube / twitch. There’s other ways. AD Talks being on example.

I don’t see how promoting rp via vĆdeos works? I don’t think anyone would just pause the vĆdeo constantly just to read walls of text in a chat.

Goldshire Lux has a you— okay, I cannot even finish that sentence without throwing my phone at the floor. I don’t think we have anyone else than Ercia.

Like 50k+ people watch Critical Role group play DnD live every week. Nerd culture is the norm these days and a lot of people have nerd interests!

I think this is a good idea but you’d need a very good video editor to keep people tuning in.

There’s probably a big difference between six or seven professional voice actors acting out RP

And one streamer streaming the silent RP they’re in. It would take crazy amount of charisma to keep people watching RP

How big! 50k is a huge number! Even if the difference was 49k people (not to mention Critical Role is live) that’d leave a great amount of people!

As I said, it really needs a very skilled video editor and with maybe voice narration to keep people interested in the plot! Not an easy undertaking at all! Not much different than setting up a video channel dedicated to another subject!

As mentioned above, there are a considerable amount of roleplay focussed channels on both Youtube and Twitch, however they almost exclusively rely on using voice chat.

This lets a casual viewer quickly delve into whatever is going on and is probably far more attractive than reading a block of text.

Personally feel like WoW roleplay wouldn’t attract the same audience unless there was some form of narration.

More AD talks would be great!

…reminds me I need to speak to you about ā€˜Pirate’ stuff. :skull_and_crossbones:

Again doing a video of just roleplay is only one method. There’s the Ad Talks method of talking about Rp. then there’s the possibility of doing news type coverage of server events. Doing videos about different types of roleplay ā€œmilitary, merc, house, civilian, etcā€.

Oh, I forgot. There’s The Feaster, even if his uploads aren’t overly frequent.

AD Digest was fun…

Streaming RP is pretty hard because it’s not very action-packed for the viewer - there’s no risk or crazy exciting plays to watch, just some people silently typing

IDK how you could spice it up and make it fun. I’ve had some success (ie. like 60 viewers at a time) doing a weekly thing for the PCU where I talk about what’s been happening but that’s very niche + not interesting for anyone outside of those events

Not sure what you’d do for a general audience

I’ve tried doing a bit of something in the same vein over the years to archive some events and campaigns in video format for 3 reasons mainly:

  1. they’re usually fun to look back at years after the stuff has happened

  2. to advertise our rp realm: there’s the hope they might attract some new people to be curious about WoW roleplay

  3. maybe inspire other people to do something similar they see in the videos (events etc)

Unfortunately the vids just take so long to make that I don’t do much of it anymore. If anyone knows any YT channels featuring roleplay events I’d love to check them out!

I liked the Ratchet Radio initiative years back:

With a lot of fancy editing and some voice acting (probably making it closer to a machinma). Although… I do wonder if it would be possible to make battles more visually appealing with addons (so the viewer gets something that resembles the battles in Final Fantasy and the like).
