From my understanding, Warlocks keep to themselves in general. And especially in the alliance people are not thrilled by demon summoning and the use of fel magic.
But after the attack of the Legion, the cooperation of the classes and the acceptance of the illidari would it still be resonable for a Warlock to keep his demonic dealings secret?
“In Hiding” wouldn’t be the term I would use.
They are out in public, but they do not run around telling everyone they’re warlocks.
View it similar to religion in some certain republics. Most people can make educated guesses, but it’s largely a don’t ask, don’t tell policy.
That’s how I view it. You play with the destructive forces which have invaded the planet many times and caused untold damage, so you’re still going to keep it on the downlow.
As for DH and DK, they’re unlikely to spent much time around the public. They have a job and they stick to it, seeing them would be a rarity.
There are Warlocks which work for the Alliance, although on that topic for Warlocks everything they do would be for the Alliance and using their magics against the Alliance would be seen as treason I imagine. They are meant to be in control of their powers and capable of defending Azeroth against the Horde, in your case.
However, I’m not too sure on how they view other magics, as it’s quite possible you will meet people who anticipate Fel users, then obviously you’ll have Void Elves who respect Warlocks who use the Void.
I think it depends on who you meet, but if you did want to RP a Warlock in hiding then it completely up to you, there is no reason you have to play a public Warlock if you don’t want to
I think it’s a bit difficult to say for certain as the player base skews class numbers differently to how they are represented in universe. I imagine that, in universe, there are very few trusted warlocks and they are generally still told to keep to themselves for fear of scaring the populace. Remember, the vast majority of actual people in universe wouldn’t know exactly what happened on the Broken Isles. The same is true of Void Elves, Death Knights, Demon Hunters, etc. The general populace probably don’t trust any of them but higher leadership know they can be called upon when necessary to aid from wherever their official home is.
Also, I’m guessing there is still a lot of faction animosity. I doubt the Argent Dawn are ever really happy to work alongside Death Knights. Night Elves probably wouldn’t trust a Warlock aiding their Sentinels and so on.
it is situalitional.
Place’s like undercity it is freely praticed.
In ogrimar you keep it to yourself as people consider you a reminder of those who “enslaved” them.
You want to avoid stiring up the hornet nest.
Just because they relucatly tolerate you for being usefull doesnt mean you are liked.
Silvermoon warlocks are just an different kind of magic who one not to be public about.
After keal’thas fall to the legion warlocks are look upon with suspision.
They arent as open about it as they used to be.
In silvermoon it would be like telling people you disect corpses for a living, be a tax collector or teach molesters how to control themselves.
Even if your intentions are noble you are dealing with stuff most people dont want to think about.
So you dont bring it up in polite conversation or when your girlfried parents ask what you do for a living.
The alliance is alot more straightforward.
If anyone ask: your a mage.
You dont walk around with demons or pratice your craft in the open.
You keep a low proffile and those in the know will look the other way.
You are usefull.
If it wasnt for that you would be killed.
Gnomes threat it as they threat all magic: a curiousity.
Something to learn.
Humans pretend it doesnt exist.
Night elves wont murder you because your an ally but you best not corrupt the forest or they will never find your body(same for everyone but warlocks are watched extra, same goes for anything that uses fel)
Worgens respect the night elves haterd for it and keep it hidden.
And dreanei barely tolarete it since they know fully how corruptive it is but again they wont strike until you give them a reason.
Being a warlock on the alliance is like being a registered sex offender.
You arent shouting it from the roof top but your knowledge is to usefull to simply kill you.
Aslong as you dont give them a reason too they wont kill you but you are only tolerated.
This has not changed.
Same for the demon hunters.
They are too usefull too just kill off.
Or death knights.
Aslong as they keep to themselves people are content to ignore them.
In the current war warlocks, demon hunters, death knights, rogue’s and all classes that arent socialy exacptable are usefull so people wont try and murder you.
But when you are no longer needed…
Lets just say that people have short memories.
Shorter still for those who dont pose a threat to them.
Lets say that if the alliance would kill all there warlocks.
They go into hiding, the council of the black harvest will feel threated and might join/rebuild the legion, or meaby sylvanas reqruits them into the herd.
Warlocks are consider evil people used to kill other evil people.
If it wasnt for the fact they are more usefull alive and relatively in the open they would be hunted and killed.
But as it is.
A warlock is an asset.
If you want to roleplay a warlock:
Play it like a cultist.
You have a face you show the public and you got a face you show your fellow cultist.
You dont show your demon in public area’s unless you have a reason too and you pretend you are a mage.
Horde warlocks can be more open about being warlocks but it isnt adviseable.
Tldr: your a lesser evil usefull against a greater evil and will only be tolarated aslong as you are usefull.
“Most of the members of the convent were old-fashioned Satanists, like their parents and grandparents before them. They’d been brought up to it, and weren’t, when you got right down to it, particularly evil. Human beings mostly aren’t. They just get carried away by new ideas, like dressing up in jackboots and shooting people, or dressing up in white sheets and lynching people, or dressing up in tie-dye jeans and playing guitars at people. Offer people a new creed with a costume and their hearts and minds will follow. Anyway, being brought up as a Satanist tended to take the edge off it. It was something you did on Saturday nights.
And the rest of the time you simply got on with life as best you could, just like everyone else.”
― Terry Pratchett, [Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch]
I would argue the Legion invasion has only increased fear around Demons and their consorts, including Warlocks. When demons almost turned your world into a literal hell, odds are it is going to give you a (more) negative view of demons, and those who associate with them. The experiences of the Sundering for instance caused Night Elves to despise the practice of arcane magic for 10,000 years despite its otherwise great usefulness.
We have to remember that Warlocks deal with the most vile and corruptive form of magic; perversing life, spreading suffering, working with and consorting with creatures of pure, undiluted evil and the things they do to people’s immortal souls is enough to render even the most outrageous mortal war crimes and abuse trivial by comparison.
So yes, warlocks; even those with good intentions, are capital E evil; and will rightly by shunned by most societies except by the most desperate situations, I.E. a legion invasion.
There are, however, cultural differences.
The Blood Elves during and shortly after Kael’s reign were relatively very open and welcoming towards Warlocks. Warlocks are also more welcome in the Forsaken society, who tend to be open to even the vilest and cruelest forms of fighting(with the exception of Necromancers, whom they hate).
And by contrast, the Orcs; who have been enslaved by demons and seen their world destroyed by the machinations of fel sorcereres are likely to despise it. Its practitioners have to work in secret, in clandestine meetings away from prying eyes.
Not to mention experiences. The magical nightborne of Suramar might have been a bit open minded to Warlocks, but after the Legion occupation of Suramar, all forms of fel users are likely to have become extremely unpopular at best.
Most functional Warlocks will likely have secret identities. This could for instance be Bill the Evocation mentor, who when he is not teaching people Pyromancy he’s practicing his dark arts in the cellar of his mansion. Or Grok the Enchanter, who sometimes walk off into the deep ravines of Durotar to secret meetings and vile rites in the dark of night.
