Are you gonna play mage in classic Wow?

Are you going to try Classic WoW? And are you going to play a mage in there?
I’m hesitant. Initially I planned to play a lock but…
Well, I have just 2 characters at max level, I main mage since TBC
So obviously I know mages the best.
Paladins are not an option for the Horde
So… what are your thoughts? Which class was and will be best in Classic WoW overall?

From the little I know mages were very strong in vanilla endgame pve and pvp. Also good for aoe faming and levelling. If you get to raid content though Ragnoros and someone else are immune to fire damage.

100% playing a Mage in Classic. Though I am tempted to try Arcane, I get the feeling its not very good. I’d want to go Fire, but its got a lot of issues in the first 3 raids (MC, Onyxia and BWL) of Classic so I’ll probably end up picking Frost.

Yeah, Baron Geddon and Ragnaros, along with some trash mobs.

As far as i know, in Vanilla, all elementals are immune to their respective element. I’m also pretty sure black dragons, like those in BWL and Onyxia are either Fire resistant or immune.

I remember I levelled and played deep arcane spec in TBC… much to everyone’s confusion. I didn’t care if it was good or not, I just thought it was cool ;0

Btw, in vanilla… how was pyroblast used? was there a hot streak mechanic?

pyroblast was hard casted and used to pull an enemy and in pvp it was used with presence of mind and arcane power to 1 shot ppl or hard caster through mountains in Alterac Valley.

First character I got to 60 was undead warlock, months later I made a human mage and it became my main. I like how both play in Vanilla, but mage is more of my cup of tea.

Plus, I won’t be spending even close to the amount of time I spent on WoW 14-15 year ago, and those teleports/portals are very good to save a great deal of time, both for me and others I play with. Portals can also add to that epic mount fundraiser with all them tips from randoms.

Mage is very good in PvP and PvE. For instances it’s mostly Frost, Fire only in late patches. AoE farming is fantastic, both AE and Blizzard. Plus, not as much dependent on gear as other classes, to an extent ofc.

I’ll go with Frost for leveling and initial gearing, then probably Arcane + Pyro for PvP and full Frost for PvE, since with AoE farming and Portals I think I will be able to afford respecs, haha. Elementalist is also very appealing…

For the Horde! or Alliance - that’s the only choice left to make.

Human - very good racial vs rogues, and great for reputation stuff.

Undead - very good PvP racial vs warlocks, and to kill all those Swifty-wannabes, cannibalize is still creepy and useful, shadow resistance is great - so clearly a more versatile choice.

What faction/race will you go with?

Human for the extra nostalgia hit. My first character was a Human Mage but i never got him past level 28, he’s still sitting there on Ravenholdt with his staff enchanted for +1 weapon damage, bracers +1 strength and absorbtion (10) on his chest, no shoulders, no trinket, I had no clue.

I can’t believe I think of playing undead mage with the same name… again ;0

That’s my autism hitting hard, I guess. I hate change. That argument with portals , AoE farming and tips is quite sensible.
I wonder if PoM pyro will indeed one shot people. I kinda remember that from early xpacs… it didn’t quite one shot people but it took huge chunks of HP.
But I didn’t fancy fire much ;p

Pom pyro absolutely one shottted people in 1.12

I am not really following the development of vanilla as close as it should, and therefore, I am not sure which patch is going to be used as the basis for the class design. If I remember correctly, the patches are going to be implemented in blocks, meaning that at least at release we won’t have the abilities that were included as part of the classes rework.

If that is the case, I would say that warlock is not going to be fun for a while: without death coil, it literally had no way of dealing with melees.

One for human, one for undead, you are no help guys, lol

I’ve re-watched some old videos, I want to play Arcane + Pyro both for PvP and fun AoE farms, Elementalist for PvP, and Ice Barrier for PvP too… damn, I’m going to need a lot of gold for respecs, haha

Look for Snutz videos from current beta, 1v2 especially - you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

It is 1.12.1 so the class patch basically.

Hunters and mages will be great in every aspect of the game im usually a hunter bht i love the mage too. I went rogue in vanilla when i played before i fell in love with ranged classss, rogues still lvl 70 from tbc lol.

If I remember correctly one trinket or was it both my memory is crud now, in Vanilla made fire pretty much a One hitter in PvP obviously with the right gear and set up. Truly a glass cannon back in the day.

I’ve read some stuff about classes in Classic. One thing about mages we forget is how hard it is to gear yourself in a raid… as there will be tons of mages/warlocks.
However, a funny thing is that Hunters are the easiest to gear up as you compete with no other class for gear ;0
But… I probably would only PvP in classic since I can’t imagine doing 40 man raids… that sounds like hellish experience xD

then I read, however, warlocks or shadow priests wreck in PVP
What I remember I hated in TBC is how mages had literally 0 heals and how detrimental it was… one mistake and you were gone ;0
Well, kinda like today but worse.

I watched some classic WoW YT videos and I didn’t really enjoy comments like “unless it’s a mage, then you can 2-shot it” ;0
Real glass, eh?

Damn, I’m really torn here.

Mages are good for gold/portals. They can 1/2-shot ppl with pom pyro but that’s it, really. Hard to gear up in raids.

Warlocks are sturdy, have good utility, they are as hard to gear up in raids. They don’t need to drink for mana, really.
Sadly, they have to farm soul shards which is possibly annoying.
According to videos, they can two shot people just like mages. Fear is really great… possibly better than poly?
Free mount at 40
Bad side - in raids you only have 16 dot-spots so locks need to spec into boring dotless specs. dots only for pvp

Hunters… Well, easiest levelling, easy to gear up in raids, mid-tier in pvp.
Cons - micro managing your pets so they don’t go away. Gotta buy bullets/arrows

Priest - good heals,
shadow - great in PvP

Eh, I don’t know really. These days people say mages are great in PvP but I find that… as a half-truth. I don’t remember TBC very well (and mages in TBC were closer to Classic mages than today’s mages)… but I remember being easily killed by locks or s.priests in duels.
In TBC I remember going oom as a mage in pvp or raids.
As a lock it’s not an issue… life tap and mana drain (was mana drain in classic?)
Dunno about hunters but I think they had some mana-sucking stings?

or maybe I should go for a rogue… no resource issues… escept for powders, poisons and whatnot but no mana issues ;0

Decisions, decisions… levelling in wow classic is harder so I’m gonna end up with 1 class, no alts, so I’d really love to make a good decision…

Try to avoid undead male mage meme race, play gnome.

Technically not true. For weapons, both warriors and rogues will be competing with hunters for ranged stack sticks.

While I do concede that Alliance will have no mail competition, Horde will have Shaman, though I don’t know if any of their specs were viable in Classic.

But mail attack power users are basically only hunters as enh shamans weren’t quite viable - only resto shamans were really useful.

I 100% will.
Knowing how bad mage is in BFA, I crave checking my class in classic where it actually could whoop some serious… butt. I’m so impatient.

Shadow priests were extremely powerful. Warlocks not that much. Basically, you relied on having the proper pet out. You would do fine against a melee if your had succubus or voidwalker. But would struggle with felpuppy, because basically the only way to gain distance was on a 2 min CD.

So, warlocks aren’t as good in classic as I think? /sadface
Hm… what was so powerful about shadow priests?
