Are you happy with covenants?

I am wondering, if people are actually happy with how the covenant abilities are implemented.
As a Demon hunter it is extremely frustrating to me, because we have 3 covenants, which are each viable only in 1 game mode: Venthyr for Raiding, Kyrian for M+, Night fae for PvP. I want to play all of it and still be viable in every game mode. Right now I have Kyrian for M+, but I am handicapped in all other game modes. I really wish I could switch covenant abilities freely like talents.

To be fair if you play Havoc you can be either Night Fae or Venthyr for raiding. The difference is minimal and it only gives you different dmg profiles due to the CD of the ability.

Yeah I really like it and I really like how you’re locked into one as it makes the choice more meaningful. I think the people complaining about them seriously need to chill out - we’re not top 500 raiders so who cares if it’s a bit of a DPS loss. ‘‘Knowing the cost of everything the value of nothing’’ springs to mind when reading complaints about the system. The system’s great, I love the flavour it adds, and I’m enjoying working through the campaign.

I do like them, but i still wish that the covenant abilities were not tied to the covenants.

Also they should really have done a better job balancing the covenants, speaking as a druid, Necrolord seemed really fun when i first saw it, like a Chi Wave + Insect Swarm hybrid spell that increased my rot? Sounds awesome and really feels like a druid ability, but in reality it just doesnt really work for any type of content. Meanwhile convoke, while it is cool and all, doesnt feel like a druid ability even though its leaps and bounds ahead of everything else.

They could’ve balanced them a bit better

I dislike it. Necrolord is really terrible for Enhancement but is an important part of elemental burst & rotation. Venthyr is amazing for enhancement but terrible for elemental, it doesn’t fit without the rotation at all, it feels clunky and dull.

Because of this I’ve been playing enhancement. I feel like I don’t really have an opportunity to explore my other specs this expansion.

The abilities could use some love to bring them all up to par, but yes, the covenants breathed some life into the game for me.

Being alliance vs horde was getting old. Of course this is very subjective.

I like that it’s an important choice, but you can do something about it if you wanna change. However I feel like, most fun powers has been given to NF. At least for druids. 1.) Convoke the spirits, a burst/blast attack. Which not only is powerful but fun to play around with. 2.) This souldbind where you can enter a cocoon and survive death. I chose kyrian because I like the story and like the transmog… but yeah… I feel like they’ve should of spread out the fun abilities more evenly.

Needs rebalance but only minor changes no big changes

Yes it is frustrating. I’m a Venthyr DH for my sins (get it) . I’ve decided over the last few weeks to try to get into rated PvP, geared by full 184 honor gear and maxed conquest via bgs and enjoyed it. Massively hindered by the fact I’ve never done rated content before (aside getting to 1000+ twice for C+S in bfa) I’ve also been told twice I am the ‘wrong’ covenant for PvP and go change it. These were for ‘no xp - chill groups’ btw.

To me they have just added frustration and yet another layer of gate keeping. Interestingly I am not seen covenant choice mentioned at all in PvE

And to the Shammy - it is a horrible position. I like playing both Ele and Enh but have not levelled mine yet as you are being forced to choose one spec as the performance is night and day. I’ve been hoping they’d balance them somewhat making the ‘wrong’ choice less painful

Luckily for me, DK covenants are really close to one another and i’m fine with my choice.

But no. It’s a garbage system since they put power into choices.

The issue is mostly doing different bits of content, it’s not just top 500 raiders who do all modes or atleast multiple modes of content (raid/dungeon/pvp) and saying this is like saying only top 500 raiders should have to worry about minmaxing but minmaxing is actually something a lot of people in the game enjoy and telling them they don’t need to do something they enjoy, well I’m sure you can imagine what the general answer to that would be.

Even then this is not an answer to cases where a covenant ability just feel weird to press (Maldraxxus for prot paladin) and doesn’t fit in the rotation or is just an outright DPS loss to have compared to not having any covenants at all (I think there was a warlock covenant with that issue)

Having it be a set in stone choice wouldn’t be as jarring as it is for me if atleast the options to choose from are relatively equal in their performance

Venthyr is the DPS loss covenant iirc. Which is a shame as the animation and the idea behind the ability are great. What’s not to like about a huge cursed blood/fire ball.

Back on topic, I like the covenants and have no problem with the fact that I’m choosing to be better at one thing than another, but then I’m a casual who only really groups up with people I know on real life, so I’m not affected by the gatekeeping issue. I can imagine if I was pugging mythic+ or doing serious content then I’d find it much more frustrating.

They do need to do something about the dud abilities though. Having an ability that will be borderline pointless seems like an odd choice.

Since I always like meaningful choices, I like the Covenants a lot.

I went Kyrian initially, but as a warrior I feel the abilities from either night fae or Venthyr would give me a better DPS increase.
Odd situation really, fae is better in m+ which is the content I prefer but I like the condemn ability from Venthyr even though I won’t go above LFR.
Any advice would be appreciated before I decide to stick with Kyrian or go to a different covenant

I’m happy with them, but I’d be happier if the covenant abilities would do shadowfrost instead of arcane or shadow damage. They’re affected by unholy’s mastery, but not by frost’s.

So go necrolord? Should be equal in all…

They shouldn’t be affected by Unholy’s mastery, unless it is stated otherwise. Unholy mastery only applies to your own and your pet’s shadow damage abilities, on top of a few rare exceptions Blizzard makes (like specific trinkets.)

Just like Ret’s mastery does not increase the damage of the Lightforged Draenei racial.

As far as I’m aware, Unholy’s mastery affects Abomination’s Limb, as it’s considered a class ability.

Ah yes, Abomination limb is affected by it, which is indeed stated on Unholy’s wowhead mastery page. Same goes for the Venthyr ability apparently.

That may be one of the reasons why Unholy’s mastery got a hefty chop with the nerf cleaver. It may also be a reason why Frost is lagging slightly behind.

I do not exactly get why they went with non-shadow and frost damage option for DK abilities in the first place. Still, abomination limb atleast has the saving grace of pulling mobs nearby, so it has the utility to still be useful for Frost.

Indeed, which is why the most logical thing to do is make the ability damage shadowfrost instead of shadow, so that it would be affected by frost’s mastery as well.
