Arena rating climb

Im a 1400 and I’ve hit a bit of a snag. If i win - i win hardly anything, if i lose - I lose a lot of rating.

Is this actually intentional? Given how TBC originally started at 1500… hitting 1500 for points is a bit of a problem…

It may have started at 1500, but there were plenty of people who dipped far below that. MMR starts at 1500 now as well, so if you’re below that, you’d be below 1500 with the original system, too.

the problem is, is im not climbing.

I’m 22-16 and i’ve lost rating. How?

Because you are stabilizing to your teams skill level, the first wins are alot of rating then you come to a certain threshold where the points are trying to determine your skill.

And if you go on a loosing streak, you will loose more for each game + MMR compensation Wich can work both ways

W/L does not matter that much, and it is not alot of games

Surely not this quick… It’s not even 50 games and i’ve won 6 more than i lost.

If you had an arena logg, I could show you.

Do you switch alot of people in your team as well that could also explain it since you would play at an lower MMR than your rating

Yeah i swapped alts after losing a ton on my undergeared char.

Would it be more beneficial to start the team again then?

Not quite sure tbh

When you win your rating goes up - this means you play against teams that are better (on average). If they are better than you, you lose and your rating goes down.

Eventually you will be at a stable rating where people you play against are the same skill level as you. You then have a roughly 50/50 chance of winning. Hence the 50% win rate that is ‘forced’ by the system.

Overall your team rating is not what determines how much + or - you get after winning or losing, it’s your MMR and your opponents MMR. Having loss / winstreaks quickly increases or decreases your MMR. A lot of people start off with a very positive win ratio, but the more they play the closer they get to a 50% winratio which is intentional by the MMR system.

Even if you won your first 15 games and hit 1600 MMR, losing 10 in a row now because you are not up to par with other players will quickly decrease your MMR. When your MMR dips below your Team rating you will see a bigger loss of rating, and a smaller gain from wins.

I recomend downloading an MMR addon / weakaura to compare your rating to your MMR. As your MMR pretty much determines everything.

The only thing that matters is your winrate at your CURRENT rating, thats what will determine if you will climb up or down the ladder.

As an example me and my partner started off with a 80% winratio hitting 1800 fast. Now the opponents are better, and the higher rating we get the lower our winratio gets, as we are closing in on our ‘real skill rating’ as the system wants you to hit a 50% winratio where you belong. Now at 2200 rating our WR is only 53% which means we are getting even closer to our ‘‘Real rating’’ And we had one loss streak along the way cause we played poorly, after that streak we actually lost 12 points and won 9. Having a winstreak to get our WR above 50% in our CURRENT rating fixed our MMR and we’re back on track.

When you find yourself being stuck at around a 50% winratio, or even going down in MMR thats when you need to figure out how to improve. The MMR system main intention is to keep you at YOUR skill level vs people of equal skill. Now it’s up to you and your partner to improve and climb.

Also swapping teams in TBC wont change your PERSONAL MMR and rating. If I leave my team now at 2200 I will still meet 2200+ people in a new team as my personal MMR is not reset, only the team rating. If you played at a higher rating before, and leave your team, or decide to play with a friend with a lower MMR you will se a bigger loss of points compared to your partner untill your MMR gets closer to his and to your opponents MMR.

I get all this.

What i don’t get is why a positive win ratio nets me a drop in MMR. That i do not understand. Overall i have a positive win ratio for the team and the character over 2 weeks and i’ve dropped rating.

It’s because the teams you faced were lower rating, maybe at the time you played there weren’t enough teams logging. We had 9-1 today but ended up on same rating like when we started, happens.

Was it a positive WR in THAT specific Session when you went down? Or overall, the overall is still irrelevant. Only current session / current rating WR matters. And also yes, you could be ‘unlucky’ to meet lower MMR teams which would yield smaller gains and a bigger loss IF you lose, make sure to not lose vs lower MMR teams since it significantly lowers your MMR. (Can be tricky if their comp counters you). But being unlucky is not really something to blame if you’re lower rating since skill / a good comp should outweigh it.

Yeah we lost to a few 900 rated Rogue mage teams.

We play Feral Mage so it’s not the most amazing comp S1.
