Assassination BrainStorm

I have played my rogue (only char) since 2006 and had chance to see a lot of changes we have been through.

Had loved the first iteration of the assassination tree when Mutilate talent was released and it was great in my opinion. Ability cost very high energy but rewarded the control and positioning handsomely with the solid high dmg it dealed.

Those days are long gone.

Objective of this brainstorm is to lower the white dmg of the spec and rise the on demand dmg. This is more fitting to the idea of the spec than the current “killing little by little” approach since an assassin is required to make a short work of its target.

Some of the following offers are of old talents, some are ideas I read on other posts, some are my own.

Nothing is listed as “I want all” . A good combination would smooth a lot of aspects of the spec and add flavor; plus reward planning more with complexity.

Please be constructive.

Cheers

Here it goes:

  • Slice and Dice : Removed from the spec.

    • Adjust the auto attack speed to the current yet half the dmg done by auto attacks.
    • Attack speed doesn’t change but the dmg is halved. This will be compensated by moving the dmg to abilities.
  • Mutilate : Buffed

    • Damage is buffed to its old iteration hard hitting version.
    • Extra crit modifier is introduced to the ability itself (4-6%?). Smooths rotation, conserves energy, ups the finisher rate and apm.
  • Relentless Strikes is back

  • Master Assassin : Replaced by “Serrated Blades”

    • Buffs Rupture dmg by 40% and all attacks gain armor penetration.
  • Venomous Wounds : Buffed

    • Critical bleed tics generate double energy return.
  • Abilities deal 1,5x dmg if attacks are from the back of the target.

    • I understand many will oppose to reintroduce positional requirements. But removal of it was one of the biggest factors that transformed the spec in to its current brain dead state. Spec would still be raid, m+ and pvp viable. This would introduce depth, thinking and planning back and reward handsomely.
  • Exsanguinate : Change talent to permanently hasten all bleeds by 30%.

  • Poison Bomb : Melee range proximity modifier to proc chance is introduced.

    • Talent will become prone to proc more the more enemies are in melee range. Thus the chance to proc on killing envenom on the last mob of the pack is relatively minimized.
  • Hidden Blades : Current stack building speed of 20 does not work with the content. Any time we spend stealthed more than 10 seconds is when we are skipping packs. The talent is useless considering the pull speed in dungeons.

    • Gaining stealth may grant 10 stacks instantly.
    • Fok may consume stacks in 5s instead of consuming all 20 stacks in once.
  • Crimson Tempest : Ticks on poisoned enemies generate 2 energy. This would shorten the dmg setup required on packs. 3 garrotes, 4 ruptures, fok, fok, Ct is the general opener on a pack at the moment; which takes so long that if the mobs die fast enough; assassination rogue can’t even reach CT cast cycle.

  • Envenom : Critical envenoms give 2 secs longer envenom buff and modify poison application rate by 15% more. This would add a complexity to monitor and would reward energy pooling in said windows.

  • Gouge is Back!

  • Swift Blade’s Cunning is Back!

  • Assassination rogues may pool 5 more cps. This is an old one also, I forgot the name of the ability.

  • Vendetta additionally to the current state, grants 5 cps and teleports the rogue behind the target in stealth for 3 seconds. Cool down’s commitment maybe rewarded better this way.

Relentless Strikes can be the saviour of this spec. Currently i found myself only sitting out of energy once i use any finisher. Slice can go or not but Relentless Strikes needs to come Sin and outdated Poison Bomb should removed for good or % proc increase with % dmg buff (like %500 more to be rewardable ).

Great ideas in general.

I would love to see our DoTs do more damage. They should definitely buff our Mastery to be more in line with Haste and Crit.

No question, that must go.

I don’t mind Envenom as the heavy hitting finisher, but Mutilate is a joke now, so yes, some buff is needed.

Can work, yes. Assa energy regen is atrocious atm.

Agreed, the crit tics would also be a welcomed change/return to form

Leave that to sub rogues. They enjoy putting double effort in for the same result

Bleed builds still won’t be a thing. Also Feral covers it. Blizz is really into these “unique” specs and classes atm, so… Let Assa be the poison build.

Or let it be a button that you can push if it proccs for like 10 secs. Like Pistol Shot procs for Outlaw. There. No need for difficult algorythm and still be at the mercy of the programming. If it procs, you can hold it for a few secs and use it.

I feel the same about Alacrity, can we just remove that? That’s the worst talent ever, and needlessly punishes rogues for doing mechanics and not being able to stay hitting things 24/7. No other class needs THAT much time to set themselves up to their max potential as Rogues… That’s the ultimate fault of SnD as well…

No opinion, never used.

The window was ok, but then the GCD attacked. With better energy regen, it would still be somewhat ok, but right now it would be a big help, yes.

Idk, with poisons and bleeds it’s pretty useless. I didn’t miss it.

A rogue party buff is not a bad idea, but I’d rather be the utility man rather than the buff bot. But as the meta stands now, every raid party wants buff bots, so…

I think Deeper Stratagem covers this better with the atk buff. Only problem is it’s on the same row as Vigor. Either make the spec be the “Pooling then Hitting a few BIG” and buff Envenom, or have a decent energy regen. This would be an interesting choice between two possible build style, but we both know one would be superior because Blizz can’t balance.

Vendetta is fine, the 5 cp with full energy regen is a bit of overkill and loses some planning, making the spec somewhat “dumber”. Not to mention I don’t know anyone who likes when an ability teleports them, Subs weren’t too happy with it as I recall during Legion.

Anyway, interesting read, I agree with many things. What I’d like to see again is Kingsbane, I liked that playstyle during Legion. Being the glass canon, with decent cleave, and I didn’t mind not being too good on AoE. I leave that bone to Outlaws.

I hope Blizzard wakes up and listens to our pleas, especially SnD, that has to go ASAP.

I love you have a lot of ideas .. but when it comes to it noting is going to happen to the class .. my main is a 208 rogue and thinking of delete it why

This warlock is better in anyway for pve vs a rogue even a DH with better aoe but less single dmg vs a rogue but have a raid buff

Sub is ok ok but still a joke right now sub was good and some say OP right now WW monks and pallys are OP in BGS and not rogues they can kill 1 target and then need to wait for cooldowns pallys just can run bubbble and ww monks kill 3/4 before they need new wait for cooldowns

The class is a joke.. Even That
InfexiousGaming guy who raids mythic he sad last video F rogues in this xpack

and u know what he is right
I have doomblade / ZK / Crit / DS / and Akaari’s Soul Fragment
and legendarys

And if u wanna play you rogue roll a Horde there is no reason to run Alli at all
90% of the people in bgs are joke and sucks and for pve top all the guilds are horde .. so u may not like what i am saying but the classs and the game is a joke

On an earlier post, I wrote down my suggestions. I like the OP’s ideas too, and what other people here have been saying.

I think the general consensus among people seems to be:

  • SnD needs to go.
  • Energy regen for Assassination needs to be increased baseline.
  • Talents need to be updated.

While we may approach these issues from different angles, the end results would all make for a more dynamic, engaging and fun spec to play.

SnD could stay as long as there will be compensation in terms of energy returns - aka relentless strikes back and damage from auto attack swapped into our abilities instead.

Technically, that would be functional, but it would fail to address the bigger issue. Is SnD relevant, is it fun, does it provide something, that makes the moment-to-moment gameplay better, that it could be without it? I’d argue, it does none of these things. I’d argue, it actually makes the overall experience worse.
Instead of fixing something, that is inherently flawed and outdated, it would be wiser to trim the fat, and give room for something better.

I do not think garrote needs a cooldown and i would have no issues with snd as a maintenance buff as long as it granted haste instead of attack speed.

Vendetta is also one of the fewest cds in the game that affects just ST. So at the very least for aoe assa should have a finisher without having to talent into it. Maybe crimson tempest is not the answer, but death from above back when it also had an aoe component was pretty sweet.

I don’t think the aotoattack damage should move towards mutilate, but rather towards bleeds and poisons. Mutilate and envenom should be the damage fillers, used to not overcap energy and cp, not to burst. For burst i’d rather have something like exsanguinate.
Lots of classes now have big hits, we don’t need assa for that, it can have its own identity and melt by empowered dots.

imho the main problem is that having to refresh both rupture and SnD doesn’t synergize at all with envenom and the buff (the buff uptime is really small).
Personally i would revert this spec all the way back to WotLK, with SnD refreshed by envenom, deadly+instant and HfB back. It is were i really felt the name ASSASSINATION had a meaning

But if you don’t even have to push the button, then why have SnD at all? It is useless and adds one more thing to balance for devs instead. Assa was fine without SnD. But I agree, if we must suffer through this xpac with SnD, at least give us some mechanic to refresh it instead of spending cp.
