Auto Attacks? Help!

I started levelling a warrior alt today, my first warrior! I quickly learned about rage but I’m unsure how to generate it quickly, is auto attack the only way? I can throw my weapon then is auto attack the only way until the rage goes up? I thought warrior would be like hunters in the sense of getting an attack that has no cooldown?
Do I have that wrong? Is there another way in auto attack to start off with?
Help ! I’m clueless!

You just have to wait till you level up really, there are extra abilities, talents and upgrades you unlock that make the class play better.

For Protection, you will eventually get an upgrade at level 34, which gives Thunderclap, Devastate and Revenge and chance to reset your rage generator’s CD (Shield Slam).

For Fury, you will get Whirlwind at level 40, which has no CD and generates a small amount of rage.

Arms on the other hand has some issues with rage, unlike the other 2 specs it has no cooldownless, costless ability. This does however get better at max level with gear and traits.

Simply put, you gain rage by auto attacking or by taking damage. Crits give double the amount of rage. Fortunately attacks you dodge are still counted.
Arms is absolutely painful to level in. Until you reach max level, you’ll be dealing with rage starvation. You can try to put a Gale-Force Striking enhancement on your weapon to increase attack speed, but it probably won’t make THAT much difference.
You’ll have a much better time levelling as Fury. As Icefall mentioned, Whirwind at level 40 has no CD and generates rage based on the targets hit, so this makes as an awesome “filler” ability when you have nothing else to press. With Arms you just stand there auto-attacking which isn’t very thrilling.
Oh, and you can also get rage just by using charge, so make sure to pick up Double Time talent at level 30.

Just look at the retail patchnotes and what they have done to your game

You will get passive rage regeneration

Thanks guys! These helped a lot.
I’m having so much fun with her already!

Take war machine at lvl 15 as it giver you 10% more rage generation from auto attacks and at 30 take double time which gives you X2 charge. Charge generates 20 rage giving you a boost at the start of an engagement and it helps mobility.

Only arms have a little rage generation problems.

Get Skullsplitter and your rotation should be a little bit more fluid.

jep haste is best statt = never rage starving  get overwhelming power traits and go full haste gear and a bit crit… no mastery maybe a bit vers… ^^

*EN raid dps Arms

Haste doesn’t fix rage starvation. You generate rage faster, but you also dumpster it faster to an equal amount.

I assume you’re talking about arms as, fury has both bloodthirst and WW as costless rage generators (and furious slash if talented).

Arms relies solely on AAs and charge for rage regeneration unless you talent skullsplitter which generates 20 rage on a 20 sec cooldown, and avatar which generate 20 rage but has a hefty cooldown.

As arms as you get higher its important to have gale force striking on your weapon as this increases your AA speed, thusly more rage. Same for haste. Haste does dump it quicker as well but it makes your rotation feel more fluid.

Generally for longer fights (raids) skullsplitter will yield more rage generation. For mythic and dungeons war machine yields more so long as mobs die in a semi regular fashion of about 1 death per 8 secs or so. I use war machine as I run mythics and I haven’t found major issues with my rage. I’ll occasionally have a few secs where I’m pooling rage but otherwise I’m pressing buttons a lot. Timing your overpower proc uses helps as well (so you use them when you’re waiting in rage, before MS comes up).

This is also why lucid dreams is a very good essence for arms, effectively unlimited rage for 15 secs and the proc itself gives more to spend as well.
