I’m a returning player and have started to gear up my holy paladin for mythic plus. My gear is coming along (ilvl 446), although corruptions and essences lagging, however, I’m really struggling even in low level keys.
I can’t tell if it’s me that’s the issue or if the players I’m pugging with are just awful. Everyone in the group seems to be taking insane damage and I’m struggling to keep up my glimmers and am having a lot of wipes. I find myself applying glimmer to the tank, chucking in a couple of crusader strikes to start trying to get my holy shock rotation going, but by the time I’ve even attempted to get a rotation on the go I find myself having to spam heal everyone in the group.
Is it just that people are likely not avoiding mechanics, standing in sanguine etc., is my gear lacking, or is there some fundamental component of the holy rotation that I’m missing?
You shouldn’t focus too much on building up glimmer until you have all 3 traits.
Try using ‘beacon of virtue’ instead of ‘Divine Purpose’. This should give you much more healing since you have only 1 glimmer piece for now.
Switch back to ‘Divine Purpose’ when you collect all 3.
I guess the key to success is managing your CDs properly. Your ‘holy avenger’ could provide you with great healing boost on some scary trash packs. You don’t have to necessarily keep if for boss fights. Same applies to wings. Try obtaining ‘vision of perfection’ essence. This is absolutely mandatory in M+.
Also, avoid using holy light. Despite mana cost, flash of light is much more efficient with holy shock proc.
Also, yes. Wipe is not necessarily your fault. Some dudes really like standing in sh*t and doing other abnormal things.
What matters is your attitude. Just be chill and take thigs easy.
I would highly recommend reading the wings is up guide to holy Paladin. Our class had some real problems if not played carefully. Also 90% of pugs are terrible so it’s deffinatly not you
Okay, thanks so much for the tip. I’ll switch to beacon of virtue for now and try running some +2s to get used to it before I push my key again.
Yeah that makes sense, boss fights are usually fairly ok and it’s the trash that ruins the group most of the time. Atal’Dazar seemed horrible last night with the combination of sanguine and the trash poison blobs.
Does vision of perfection drop on heroic? May try pick it up on an easy run first.
My main is 479 EQ in M+, i do not dare to heal 10’s as i know people there take alot more damage from 15’s-17’s i usually do.
Be patient, get some gear!
Download RIo addon look what dungeons you need to do to boost your rio score and gain access to higher rating groups and im sure at the 2k point that is easily doable nowadays you will barely have to heal.
Your class inside M+ is kinda a high risk+high reward class.
Your damage output is beyond insane while your healing outputs great you are nowhere near close to a MW monk with right healing stats but the munk can oom before you even understand it. Just be a bit patient and your pala will shine soon enough .
Players could be bad but dont forget nobody has the proper ilvl+stas+traits+essences in low dungeons and the game is “balanced” around them, again take your time and be patient while you play the best healer in S4 raid+M+ wise!
Getting essences and corruptions can increase your healing output but like others said if some players are taking damage that was designed around being avoided and not healed through then you will still have a hard time
The real question is are you forced to heal damage that was entirely avoidable to begin with? Which is basically a waste of resources you didn’t cause by your own actions and could lead to issues if fights take too long/the avoidable damage is too high
Definitely try to get 3 glimmer traits. Are you ensuring glimmer is on everyone before big damage is inc?
I think proper use of CDs is imperative for playing Holy well. Vision of perfection is a godsend for Wings procs so get rank 3 ASAP if you don’t have it.
I’d watch some paladins like Zmok running keys for some tips, he’s unreal. Also try to stack ineffable truth for the reduction in HS cds.
I started healing a few months ago and I’m only just getting the point where I’m realising a lot of the issues I run into are not my fault, sometimes you have to be honest when you mess up but a lot of the time it’s people not interrupting or using defensives, for example tantrum in UR, we wipes a few times until I realised two of my regular team weren’t using defensives on one of the tantrums.
Finally holy light, it’s pretty much useless in higher keys, the long cast time is pointless when people are taking bug damage, I don’t even use it in Mythics, it you have decent DPS, below 10 the boss should be dead long before you run OOM.
Thanks for all of your replies here guys, I hadn’t seen the notifications.
I’ve spent a few weeks healing M+ when I have the chance now. I was using Beacon of Virtue but have now switched back to my original spec with 3 Glimmers. I seem to be managing to keep the group alive, whilst having medium-high dps myself.
There are situations where the group take an insane amount of damage and I still can’t tell whether it’s something I should be healing through or if they’re just failing to mechanics. I assume it’s a mix of the two, as I notice how quickly I go from 100% to almost dead when I stand in goo or get hit by a mechanic I should have avoided.
I think it would be much more enjoyable if I wasn’t pugging, as I’ve had a couple of runs where I was the filler for a guild run and oh my god it was so pleasant. I was able to put out 30-50k dps myself as they hardly required any healing.
Guess the next step is finding the right guild to do that!
I guess if you’re running very high end and your team is perfect is where you might switch out of it for the small percentile improvement that DP could have over BoV.
Most of the time, the utility just beats the random proc. If not always.
Some healers I see have an addon to call out when someone has taken damage which could of been avoided.
I don’t know what it is, it could be details just set up to call out damage taken.
I think it’s kind of a good addon anyway as its running proof if someone thinks you’re bad at healing, but in fact it’s people standing in fire theroratically.
Then you can just refer to that and say, well maybe you should interputted, avoided or used a defensive.
Most times in lower keys usually people do like taking avoidable damage, usually because they’re inexperienced to what to expect, I guess?
You mean the addon that has 0 context for why you take that damage the addon that ignore many damage sources that are avoidable including corruption?
Sure it is fine if you are dealing with noobs that claim your healing is the problem but that addon is just annoying if you know what to do but did a mistake.
You know you messed up someone yelling you took damage from Y is pointless.
It also does not show many damage sources like corruption.
As new shaman heal in 13 14 keys i can tell you its not you.
TOS 14 endboss 4 example everyone was in another corner taking massive dmg so i had to run and spam sourge and use Totems and so, before 1 HealPhase i was oom, looking at details tank didnt tank adds, dds standing in pools and had aggro, nobody cares in pugs it seems.
It is often painful and stressful. This week in particular had been horrible with bad pugs - tanks die to necrotic and dps refresh bursting constantly at 1s remaining, sigh.
Chances are if the group is taking insane amounts of damage, they’re doing something wrong. There are the odd occassions in dungeons where massive damage hits the entire party but they are not often.
9/10 it’s people not interrupting mobs and ignoring mechanics, it took me a while to really accept this. I’d be doing 7s and 8s then watch some Twitch streams do high keys and think, that looks easier to heal than what i’m doing.
Find a dungeon you are finding this issue on and then watch a high key run through, you’ll find the odd spike in damage but experienced players will be using defensives to soak massive damage, not carrying on with DPS letting the healer struggle to keep people up.
You’ll most likely find the higher the key the easier it is to heal in certain cases, having players that know the encounters and what to interrupt on trash, etc, is really useful.
You just need to keep at it, eventually you’ll start to learn what CDs to use and when and when you can predict incoming damage it is so much nicer to heal.
