Balance druid Eclipse before applying dots?

I’ve been playing M+ on a balance druid recently, and I’m confused whether you apply dots before or after eclipse. From all druid guides online, they say to trigger eclipse first, then apply dots, but from what I can see that wastes the crit stacks from Balance of All Things, so I’ve been doing the opposite and applying dots first, then triggering eclipses. Is there some kind of advantage to triggering eclipse first, besides the dots criting for the first few ticks of damage?

Balance is now a dot class, DoTs come first, and refresh when less than 25% left.
The spec is a bit of a mess atm though to be fair… as with previous expansions its overly dependant on gear, and the ecclipse mechanic is a mess. Mastery is also underwhelming.

DoT, push into lunar eclipse, spam starfire, keep dots up and use spenders (basically).
Only bother with solar eclipse when celestial is up, most the time you only cast wrath to get to lunar eclipse (starfire cast is so long and DoTs too short to do anything effectve otherwise.

The spec needs serious attention, either sort the DoTs out and made a proper DoT class, or sort the hardcasts and eclipse out…it sits in a weird no-mans land with its currrent build.

Thank you for taking time to explain, that makes sense . Hopefully constructive changes are in the cards for future patches.

Do NOT want this at all.

Neither do I. My point was that where it currently sits is just a jumbled mess, and to actually get decent damage out of it you have to watch multiple auras/stacks, refresh 3 dots, hardcassts into eclipses and play a patchwork style. Its an overcomplicated spec, which if it were a pure DPS spec and one of the highest outputs then you could justify it, but its middle of the pack. Many of the top DPS specs are practically facerolls in comparison (some genuinely are).

But they need to do a real clean up on it and straighten it out, one way or another.

Fully concur, i just wanted to ensure that if blizz was reading it was clear none of us like being a dot class, it isn’t what we signed up for.
