Basic question Fire Mage

I am trying again the Fire Mage and from the word go I remember an old issue:

Two crits give you a Hot Streak so you can cast instant Pyroblast. But the buff appears after the spell has landed and in the meantime you have already pressed Fireball or even worse, Fireblast, thereby wasting a Hot Streak because it does not stack.

You can take it slow, wait for Fireball to land and see what happens, but when we play we tend to mash keys so I think there is loss of DPS.

Is this how it is?

There are talents now to garuntee pyroblast with phoenix flames and fireblast even outside combust, so its not really a issue.

Fairly easy to get into a flow even if those are on cooldown.

If your previous fireball crits, during your cast you fire blast during the cast. You then use you hot streak proc on a pyroblast at the end of the fireball and immediatly start casting another fireball.

Outside of combustion you should never press fireblast except for when you are already casting fireball or scorch and you have a heating up proc (unless you are at max charges of fireblast, then you can fire 2 off during a fireball for a hot streak proc).

Surely the rule of only pressing Fireblast during casting is the same in and out of Combustion?

Nope.

During combustion you should basicly be doing:
Pyro → fireblast/phoenix flames → Pyro → fireblast/phoenix flames ->Pyro etc.
So it’s only instant casts.

Outside of combustion you press fireblast if you have a heating up proc & are halfway through a fireball cast. Then you cast pyro just as fireball finishes, causing both pyro & fireball to hit at the same time.

i would recommend watching some recent fire mage gameplay, as the spec plays very differently compared to wotlk/cata/mop or whichever era you used to play it previously

You can keep casting fireball, and if you get a heating up, and you are near getting capped on Fireblast charges (and you are not under a specific timer on the cooldown of combustion) you use a Fireblast to get a hot streak, and fire it off alongside your fireball that you just finished.

The goal is to keep on casting, and minimize losing out on heat up procs.

Fireblast also serves another purpose durin combustion, which is to keep up your Infernal Cascade/Feel the Burn buff. For this reason your single target rotation is pretty rigid, and does not change too much.

OK, I will work more on the basic rotation, now is it me or does the current Fire spec hit like a wet noodle? I mean I get 2K EXTRA DPS just by switching to Arcane… I have run a few HC dungeons, I come last even the healer overtakes me, and we are all similar gear, around 230. Only when I pull out the images and combustion I manage to perform a bit better. But for most of the dungeon it is pants! A lot of fire, a lot of explosions, and no meat!

Outside of combustion or rune of power it is weak yeah but played well with the right set up its pretty powerful.

Modern fire is designed around being in a min-maxed combustion as much as physically possibly.

Consequently, outside of combustion it does absolutly terrible. And even within combustion you need to use the optimal build if you want to do well.

O, and cuz of this it generally doesn’t function properly in easier content like HC dungeons or with lower-end gear.
