The client showed there is an update so I restarted it to install the update. I have re-installed the client but it didn’t help.
After the update the client won’t launch anymore, it comes up with the error:
This application failed to start because it could not find or load the Qt platform plugin “windows” in “”.
Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.
I am on Arch Linux:
- 6.0.2-arch1-1
- GNOME Shell 42.5
- wine-7.19 (Staging)
Have any of you people had this problem too?

Same here on Arch:
6.0.3-arch3-1
XFCE
wine-staging-7.19
Same on arch only with zen kernel
Kernel: 6.0.2
Wine: 7.19
Gnome: 42.5
Same for me on Ubuntu 22.04 with wine 7.19
The last releases of the launcher were a bit borked (copying the files from one version to another) but you could fix it but this time I don’t know what to do.
Not that good when you want to pre-download DF because now I am just starting the Wow.exe with wine.
Same here
Ubuntu 20.04
wine-7.19 (Staging)
Same issue here
OS : LinuxMint 21
Tried with :
- Wine 7.19
- lutris 7.2
Always the same errors.
I’ve also tried to copy the ‘platforms’ directory, and/or the ‘qwindows.dll’ file, in different places (Battle.net directory, c:\windows, …), to no success.
Tried to set the env variables “QT_QPA_PLATFORM_PLUGIN_PATH”, also same errors.
(I’ve been playing WoW on Linux since Vanilla )
Exact same issue here. Haven’t been able to find a lot of time to play, so it’s super frustrating not being to play the moment I find some time.

Hey guys, the simplest workaround is to just launch wow-classic from the executable, without the battle.net launcher
You cannot update game this way but hey at least you can play it now without waiting for blizz to fix it
If you don’t know how, you can try something like this:
WINEPREFIX=/path/to/wineprefix wine /path/to/wine/prefix/drive_c/Program\ Files\ (x86)/World\ of\ Warcraft/classic/WowClassic.exe
You can launch the Wow.exe but you can’t pre-download DF if you still haven’t right now.
@Mephíste
Yeah this is what I am doing at the moment, I just start the Wow.exe with just:
wine Wow.exe
but the problem is I can’t pre-download Dragonflight without the launcher now

Yeah, it’s a bummer that they forgot about linux users (again). We might be just 1% of player base but we still pay for their content.
Hopefully they’ll fix this issue sooner rather than later!

Issue ““solved by”” reinstalling EVERYTHING (Battle.net and WoW, and Classic, and all others games) in a whole new Wine prefix.
Not a true solution, but a good bypass for now
My internet isn’t the fastest and so far it is only a Battle.Net client issue, what if I install the client on another Prefix and when installed just search for my WoW files (or just copy paste them in the new prefix), downloading WoW again would take too much time
// would like to know why a new prefix solves this
@Anhyankha: Did you get it to run with or without Lutris?
Not him but it doesn’t matter if Lutris or not because both use the same Wine version, in this case it is Staging.
And it is not a Wine problem because it is on Blizzard’s end, again.
No it is not that easy. E.g. Overwatch 2 does not run with pure wine either, but lutris users made it start some days ago. Probably it’s just about the knowledge witch setting in winecfg or winetricks is needed.
So it can help to surround the cause of the problem.
@Balphemius
I’ve installed it with Lutris, this time, with the “default” Battle.net install.

Didn’t know if your method will work or not.
As I’ve said, it’s the ‘‘solution’’ that I’ve used.
Lutris, Bottles etc. are all just bloat and runners for Wine.
All you need is Wine (wine-staging (both programs use them) and winetricks, really.
This time it is 100% on Blizzard’s end.
@ Anhyankha
since the issue I am just going into the retail folder and am starting WoW from there with wine with the terminal. Not so much we can do right now.
