Battle.net update agent Connection Issue

WoW gets stuck on initializing when trying to update. If I pause and resume it gets stuck on waiting on another update, despite being the only battlenet-game on the computer. Scan and repair doesn’t work either. While being stuck it also sends and downloads data at full speed, so battle.net update agent uses my full bandwidth while doing nothing.

If I uninstall battle.net, even if I also manually remove every trace of it from regedit etc, the battle.net installer gets stuck on 1% so it’s not possible to reinstall it either.

I’ve tried alot of solutions and none of them has had any effect. Don’t have any antivirus, just windows defender, and I’ve tried to disable the firewall and every single security-option in it, added exceptions to the firewall for everything battlenet-related, created a new windowsaccount, switched to google public dns, tried using a VPN, changed alot of different settings. Nothing makes any difference at all.

Battle net and WoW runs fine if I plug in my old computer (Windows 7), I can download updates and everything there. And I can get the game running on my new computer (Windows 10) if I update it on my old computer then move the battlenet and WoW folders to an USB, then move all files to my new computer from the USB. Because it’s only the update agent that I can’t connect to.

But this takes alot of time and effort and I don’t want to be doing that every time there’s an update, because while this enables me to run the game on my new computer it’s still impossible to download updates or any other games through battlenet. The update agent is somehow blocked on my new computer, while it works perfectly on my old computer.

Had the same problem last year, as in it was impossible to install battlenet on a then brand new computer, it was the first thing I tried to download and install and it didn’t work, but back then I only had to transfer everything from my old computer like that once, because after that it somehow magically started being able to connect to the update agent on my new computer too, and it worked fine for months, but not anymore.

Absolutely everything else works perfectly fine, I use my computer for alot of things and spends 14 hours at the computer every day, and being unable to connect to Blizzards update agent is the only problem I’ve ever experienced with it.

CTRL/ALT/DEL > Task Manager > kill every process with Blizzard Update in it and start the launcher again

took me like 5 tries, but worked now

otherwise logg out of the launcher complete, clear the cache and try again

No I’ve tried that lots of times before and it doesn’t work.

However after writing this I went to bed and left battle.net on for 6 hours, and that somehow solved it because it had seemingly managed to initialize and download the latest patch when I woke up. But I’ve tried that before too and it didn’t work any of the earlier times. Also I tried downloading another game from battle.net now and that still gets stuck on initializing as before, so the problem is still there.

So it would be really interesting to know what’s causing it, because it makes no sense to me.

the same happens to me every update - last time I had to reinstall battle net but I actually had trouble doing so and I don’t wanna do it again…

Hi there!

So, there’s a few steps to try to resolve this for you, please do make sure to do them in order!

Firstly, please fully close the Blizzard App, and any Blizzard games, and then uninstall the App as per this guide:

Next, please delete all the Blizzard App files, some of which may be left over after uninstallation, by following this guide:

Finally, please download and install the App again via this link:

Arythwinn

Basically the title. over 1 gigabyte downloaded while the update agent is stuck at initializing (366/366 bytes).

Alot of people having the same problem.

Been trying to log in now for 2 days, I have to update my WOW but saying unable to connect to internet when internet is working correctly.

do I have to do it every time WoW wants to update? BEcause last time I had reinstall battle net too and it’s getting annoying with all these updates every 3 days because you guys can’t do proper beta testing

Same here. Have this problem every update. Reinstalling, shooting processes, vpn, no vpn, deleting cache - nothing helps. Just sit and wait while something happens and it will continue “initializing”. On Wednesday I waited for 3 hours. This time took 15 mins, thanks for that though lol

I’ve tried following those steps 2-3 times before and it just results in the battle.net app getting stuck at 1% when trying to reinstall it, so it’s not possible to reinstall. Maybe it would start installing if I left it on like that for half a day, but I still shouldn’t have to wait half a day for it to start working.

As far as I can determine the core problem is that Blizzards update/downloadserver for some reason just isn’t responding, or takes forever to do so, and if it somehow originates from some kind of problem with the software on Blizzards own server then there’s not much anyone else can do about it.

I had to reinstall battle net 3 times today to get the update through. Pretty annoying ngl. Once I couldnt uninstall battle net had to manuyally delete it

I had the same problem. It really is mindboggling, but I closed battle.net completely and opened it again as an administrator this time (right click on icon> Run as administrator) and it worked, surprisingly.
Before finally managing to load WoW, World of Warcraft process would get stuck inside Battle net multiple processes, and outside of this battle net process there was this Battle net update agent staying around forever. Every time I clicked “play” to open WoW, World of warcraft process would stack up with the previous similar one. Pretty annoying… but running as administrator worked, I hope it works for you too.

Well same error again this patch, and this time it didn’t work to just wait. After agent.exe downloaded and discarded 3 GB of data it just stopped initializing and told me that WoW needs to be updated, and when I clicked the update-button again it just started initializing again.

Blizzard’s probably lost thousands of players from this, as it has been going on for a long time and affects every game on battle net.
