I want to play a tank in Mythic+ but I don’t like kiting all the day (like VDH).
I want to finish Mythic+ 15 - not higher.
So what do you think is the strongest Face-Tank in Mythic+ right now?
Ingame a player said that Prot-Warrior and Guardian are currently the best Face-Tanks -what do you think?
In summary: I’m over 40 years old and I would like to play a stressless Face-Tank
Any help is welcome!
guardian is a safe pick, very simple to pick up and just go with, has good toolkit and personal utility, immune to hex and poly for the very few mobs that use it
Plus you have the added benefit to swap to incarn moonkin form to convoke when a boss is in its “bonus damage taken” phase or when it’s afk channelling
Like many others already have said, Guardian Druid, by a solid margin. My choice also came from the same place as you. I’m almost 40 and I wanted a tank alt that needed less split-second decision making than my DK and DH. While prot warrior is also pretty capable of facetanking, their playstyle is much more hectic and stressfull. If you just wanna chill and facetank, nothing comes close to Guardian Druid.
In previous expansions I always found Guardian Druid a bit too simple/boring, but the combination of Convoke the Spirits and some of the legendaries added more depth to the gameplay. While I’m not a big fan of the borrowed power systems in general, Blizzard nailed it with Convoke and I hope it gets added permanently to the Druid spellbook once we leave Shadowlands behind. Only downside of Guardian is that their upfront damage outside of cooldowns is quite lacking, so overly eager dpsers can quickly snatch some aggro on the start of a pull.
Other good aspects of Guardian:
Enrage dispel is very useful in dungeons. So is the ability to remove poison and curse effects from yourself.
Having combat res as a tank is great, as you are the least likely to die. While it costs some rage to use, I have never found that to be a big issue on Druid.
Going with Balance Affinity talent gives your Thrash ability (your main AoE) 11y range so the few times you need to kite you can still hit mobs while many of them are just outside of melee range. It also gives you access to a knockback with just 30sec CD. Great for pushing mobs standing in sanguine pools.
Going into Moonkin Form with Heart of the Wild (empowers spells by 30%) and Convoking gives you crazy burst damage. You can for example solo the mini-bosses when you enter the portals on Mue’zala, even on tyrannical +15 keys.
If your group has a wipe after doing a skip with shroud or invis pots, you can sneak back in stealth and res everyone.
Top 3 legendary choices in my opinion:
Natural Order’s Will - Combined with the talent “survival of the fittest” you can pop Barkskin every 40 seconds and get 30% damage reduction for 12 seconds, in addition to a free ironfur (armor) and frenzied regeneration (self heal). This makes going into pulls without any resources super safe and because of the short cooldown you will have it up on pretty much every pack of mobs.
Ursoc’s Fury Remembered - Adds 15% chance for Thrash to proc an additional time and also gives you an absorb shield for all your Thrash damage. This is the most used legendary by top druids, but it revolves a lot around giant pulls when you have Incarnation every 3 minutes, as it lets you spam Thrash every GCD for 30 seconds making you more or less unkillable. This can also help with threat if you get some procs in the start of pull, and provides more dps overall. A great choice if you don’t feel like you need the added safety of Natural Order’s Will.
Oath of the Elder Druid - I don’t use this in M+ but it’s very nice for outdoor content and Torghast. It gives you Heart of the Wild for 10 seconds when you shift into Moonkin Form (1 min CD on the proc). This means you can pick other talents on that row, and also have the damage bonus of Heart of the Wild for every Convoke the Spirits. This is especially useful in Torghast where there are anima powers that reduce the CD of Convoke
But tankiness isn’t the problem for any tank in m+ unless you go well beyond 15.
The problem is people who can’t walk. They can’t just not pull. It’s too hard for people to just follow the tank, they just have to try to take stupid shortcuts, they just have to walk too close to mobs. Then they start crying about “THIS WON’T BE IN TIME” “OMG PRIDE IS WRONG”.
There are only 3 tanks who can easily facetank mobs without moving on +20 keys fortified week :
Guardian druid, protection warrior and blood dk.
Every other tank has to kite in order to survive. These 3 don’t.
Since the easiest tank to play (by far) is guardian druid, that’s what you should go for.
Prot warrior and blood dk can facetank aswell without problem but they are much more diverse in term of gameplay than just a spam thrash and mutilate while spamming ironfurand frenzied regeneration, which makes them harder to play.
Yes, this is also a great point. It’s borderline impossible to mess up the basic rotation as a Guardian Druid since you have very little decisionmaking on how you spend resources. Just use Thrash and Mangle on cooldown, fill the gaps with swipe or moonfire and spend rage on ironfur or frenzied regen.
Warrior and DK are really strong but way more complex to manage in terms of resources and rotation, and doing a mistake will more easily result in dying.
