Best first time DF leveling route?

Just bought DF, dunno what class to level yet.
Whats the best leveling route for fun?
Follow the campaign or smth else?
Do side qs worth it?

You have no choice.

You HAVE to complete the campaign to open World Quests and the max-level campaigns, and you have to complete it in order.

If you complete only the campaign quests - those marked with the shield on the exclamation - you will almost exactly get to 70, so doing dungeons or other XP activities won’t speed anything up.

If you have gathering profs, sure, skill those up along the way, though prices have cratered at this point, so they won’t make you rich. Still, some extra poclet money never hurts.

Once you have completed the campaign on your first character, subsequent characters can do quests and levelling in whatever order. Personally, I do the first couple of chains of quests in Waking Shores, then skip to Azure Span, and hop around some side chains and world quests to finish.

I wouldn’t say that any of the quest chains are terribly fun, since I either dislike or don’t care about the characters this expansion, but it’s a matter of taste.
