I have gotten into tanking recently with my guardian and was able to push keys to 10+-. Unfortunately my guild is doing already higher keys which I do not feel comfortable with yet. So I am loving the PUG life.
Which would be the best tank for pugs atm.
I am split between DK and pally. I read DK can be quite self sufficient, but pally has some crazy group utility
For everything up to +20, pick whatever you like. That’s a fact.
Now my personal opinion - pick everything you like, except guardian druid. With the way how ironfur works, for me it’s by far the worst tank there is now. Until they fix it, and until they buff the passive armor, and make ironfur have a CD / higher uptime, I wouldn’t bother.
And thats because thats what the community hivemind has accepted as the correct tank to be playing atm. You’ll just get into groups easier with it.
Don’t be fooled by the “crazy utility” though. Most people have trouble playing their own character, positioning mobs, kicking them, keeping up active mitigation and so on. Now you need to freedom a, heal B and throw an immunity on C. It’s an easy class to play. Its a hard class to play well.
It’s quite nice to see that groups are using different tanks if you look at the the link on raider io. It’s not just a sea of Paladins.
There will always be people who only care about what is meta. It’s really funny as someone who has played Paladin since Wrath to suddenly see so many Rets pop up because they are strong.
And what’s even funnier in that prot paladin is the only S tier spec in M+. No dps and healers are S tier lol. I expected Fire mage to completely dominate higher keys but it turned out roughly the same as shadow priest and balance druid.
If you’d use a healer addon it really would be the easiest thing ever using utilities: right click word of glory, right click lay on hand, centre click bop, mouse click 4 flash light, mouse click 5 blessing of freedom it is really easy playing paladin like that. It is a tank healer at the end of the day.
Paladin is strong because it has a lot of group utility, but the condition is that you learn to play it well and actually use the group utility. If you don’t have the multi tasking skills needed to keep yourself alive, keep aggro, etc as well as helping out the group with defensives and off-healing, you won’t do any better than on any other tank.
You will get invited more easily as a paladin because it’s the current meta and groups think they can’t do their +10 with anything else, but tuning can change that at any point by shifting the meta.
That is odd. Personally I just invite the first tank that comes into my group, as the wait times at the moment for dps at pugs are disgusting.
I would rather do the key, fail and do another one then wait 40 minutes for another tank.
I have also not seen a huge differences in key completion between the tanks. With a twist that sometimes when we wipe half of the team at a boss some pallies will be able to just carry the fight by acting as an extra healer. But this is only for some bosses.
This only shows you how illogicall the community is, if they rather wait 40minutes longer then have potentially not a optimal tank.
