What’s the current best ways to farm gold in retail? I mean, farming stuff by killing mobs - I don’t have patience for AH flipping.

well, consumables in general sell well…boosting is probably your fastest way to make money besides tokens if you dont want to flip the ah.
theres also the mission table but that takes time and quite a few alts.

I’ve found that having a bunch of alts and doing callings on them is pretty good. The callings constantly give you rep, so you get a decent number of paragon caches too (3,5k-5k gold each). It’s important to do the callings every 3rd day, so you can pick up all 3 at once. Having to do one calling on an alt isn’t really good, especially when you can occasionally line them up and have 3 revendreth callings for example and knock them out in 15 minutes.
The gold from callings is not THE BEST by far, but it is very low effort and very low annoyance. I’m certain farming Freehold trash is probably better, BUT I really don’t like doing the same dungeon over and over.

Mythic BOE CN Farming could be the best besides boosting especially on low-med pop realms since there they are more expensive there, don’t know how are drop rates these days
More fun would be running old soloable raids and sell BOE mogs on ah though those will usually be slow sellers
BFA islands also may still be decent source of gold, I think you could also do those while leveling alt
Crafting items with cooldown such as titansteel, last time I checked income was pretty decent. Works best with multiple alts. Never done this personally though
My strategy is to do callings on an army of alts :]

Callings
In terms of grind farming, pick mobs that can be skinned as you can double up on lw mats for ah gold as well as vendor trash they drop. Key is to find somewhere ideally with high spawns such as the area outside the first town in Bastion. You can easily kill and skin in an endless lap roaming around that area and make a fair amount from the skins plus the trash loot. Best done on a low level char (50) in decent bfa gear for quick kills and any green items will be valuable to sell on AH for people looking to boost their ilevel for TOF dungeon spam as they’ll be for level 50s.
I have a question. I really liked islands as bits of content, even if their reward structure was busted… but can you solo them? Or do you have to queue and hope there’s 2 other players waiting?
good idea but you really have to be lucky. spamming normal ies is hardly worth it. i leveled from level 25-50 on an alt and i got 135 dubloons (not even enough for a cache cause you need 175 for the epic ones) and 1 item.
also depending on the time of day and weekday invites can be suuuuuuuuper slow.
i am queueing heroics right now and invites take serveral minutes up to like 10min, if im unlucky even more. there are barely any mythic ie groups as well. 
sadly you cant solo them regardless of difficulty. depending on the time of day it can take really long to get into groups as well.
i am queueing for heroics right now on my own and it does take quite a while at times. i think its best to spam it with two buddies.
but yeah i agree, it should be soloable by now.

Cata kill elementals for volatiles
Wrath kill elementals for eternals.
All classic and tbc dungeons for boes.
Timeless isle for pets
Fishing pygmy sucker fish in wrath and albino cavefish in deepholme.
Herbing cata herbs sell for quite alot.
Pandaria trilium and ghost irons super popular and you can harvest them from your panda farm.
If you want super fast gold , fly around un’goro and mine thorium. Arcane crystals go for 800-900g each. I always sell out less than 24 hours.
Avoid modern materials , too many people farming them gold per hour is trash.
Lastly boe mount farming in bfa. Two of them go for over 400k each. You will get 1 every 1-3 hours in a farm group.

Take a Skinner and Herber, and run around Bastion between Seat of Eternal Hymns ands Eternal Forge killing, looting and skinning all of the mobs (mostly the Horse/Unicorn things) and Herbing any Herb that you come across.
Sell:
Heavy Callous Hide
Callous Hide
All herbs
Vendor all the Greys.
Craft:
All the Tenebrous Ribs into Haste Food (if you need to buy Creepy Crawler meat from AH, do so, you’ll get your money back easily).
Back in April this would net me between 25-40k per hour.
Nowadays it’ll probably be less.

Having a bunch of alts at level 60 and doing the mission table (few times a day) + callings.

And by veeeeeeeeeeeery far.
The only other ways to make gold profitably ( Aka not spending 1 hour to make a mere 30-40k gold ) is botting or being an AH goblin. M+ isn’t so much profitable anymore since prices crashed down ( Albeit still okayish, about 60k an hour if you do +15’s ). HC raid I believe are about 80-90k an hour ( Usualy takes 2 hours for a full run and it nets you 180-200k if its full of people trading ). Mythic raiding is probably even more profitable than that but I’ve never done it.
And obviously, especialy this season, PvP boosting is probably by far the most profitable way of making gold.
Making gold in wow is not worth it even for paying your sub .
Any job that gets you more / hour , + all the recommandation posted above require time or gold investment .

Not if you know what you’re doing.
The first HC boost I did this expansion took about 2H and got me 380k gold. Which at the time was worth about 2 wow tokens.
And let’s not even talk about torghast the first few weeks, a layer 8 would net you about 600-700k gold for roughly 1h of work depending on your class.
There are a lot of boosters out there , that means competition , u need gear to boost ppl .
I made millions of gold in wow mate i’m talking from experience .
