Better upgrade systems

The crest/stone system is absolutely horrible.
Who knows what is what? Who wants to read 4 words for a item?
Gilded harbinger weathered crests, bag of weathered harvesting gild crest hamburgers… harvester bag of gilded bags of fractured bingbang… what even is anything wtf??
Then you got purple bags with blue items in them and WTF?? JUST STOP IT!
What do you need for what?? There’s no sense in anything, ZERO user friendly approach or intuitive design. Fire whoever made this garbage.

Sadly, it’s 100% locked in for the next 3 meta expansions of patches, whatever you wanna call them.

But for the love of god, next time you design something like this, make it with some common sense. This is what a good design would have looked like:

First of all, crests come in 3 types, green blue pink, respectfully obtained from casual world questing/dungeons/bg reward chests, to hc/world boss activities/LFR, and finally mythic dungeons/hc raids. Each crest has a instantly visual tiny stars on the top rim of the icon, the icon frame being also a thicker color (green blue pink).
That’s it, super natural intuitive logical common sense design.
Mouse over for noobs and it lists you all activities where and how to get them.

Next:
Let’s say items upgrade to 8/8, as they do.
You could have a base valorstone cost, with no crest cost to 1-2,
green crests from 3-4, blue 5-6, and pink 7-8.

Currently players are constantly starving for crests, bleeding dry, while drowning in valorstones flowing over the cap with nothing to do with them.
Add a upgrade option for valorstones + low crests = 1 higher tier crest.

Make stone gains much lower for green activities and higher for pink activities.
It’s not like you think with the current gain speed, like “oh you want people just to play 2 hours, get stone capped, upgrade boom boom done, 8/8 ??”
No, the costs will be balanced so it’s balanced… whatever.

Actually I’m gonna defend this part. Reading 1 article and going thru breadcrumbs quest sshould be doable by even the dimmest of Gen Z and most backward boomers.
This system with crests is pretty good - u can transmute lower into higher, now after nerfs it’s pretty cool.

the only problem - troubles with valorstones but that can easily be fixed.

Stop crying that you need to … um , literally think on a minimum efficiency to “get” the system.

Some of the bags u mentioned are for downgrading crests, others are for upgrading. nothing else.

I understand your point, I had a similar thought cross my mind when they introduced it. I think the smart thing about the system as it is tho is that it creates incentive to step up a bit to further upgrade your gear. It doesn’t exactly work on me  but I do think it is a clever sort of nudge.

Personally I don’t get the necessity for needing two currencies (crests and stones) to upgrade your gear. I’d stick with one myself. I’m sure there is a good reason for it tho.

It’s one of the better systems we’ve had in WoW, but you being a low level classic alt probably doesn’t realize this. Is it perfect? No. But is it fixable to be excellent? For sure.

Instead of having different versions, just maybe 1 you can upgrade either from the bottom, or the middle. And when you do higher keys, also some of the lower crests drop so you don’ t have to do lower keys to upgrade your items ?

I agree, especially as there are so many types of Crests (I don’t know how many as I’ve disengaged from gearing in WoW since DF, my item level is ~580 or something).

Also have a Vendor to buy Veteran level gear at least for the same currency. The RNG of Frustration Cache of the Inane from weekly chores is no fun. Just put Gear Currency in those. So you do stuff you get currency, you buy and upgrade gear with.

That is right here represents every single forum poster that is complaining about gearing, queue times and difficulty below +10 for M+

Absolute gold.

Let us send gilded to alts coz I refuse to refarm when you have 1k gilded on main so what is up with bad system? We have been asking for years and you devs still refuse it? Unbelievable!

I will give you idea, once you unlocked achievement so you can send to any alt in season 2. Good idea? If no, then alts are dead to me!

Scrap crests, go back to valour for upgrades, limited by the highest of your raid progress, m+ progress and delve progress.

Simple, effective, no-one gets angry.

OP sounds like those boomers who have issues figuring out self-checkout at supermarkets

It can seem overwhelming when you first come into contact with the system but once you’ve got to grips with it, it just repeats each season. I don’t like the crest names each time, I think it would be easier wiht a colour coding system similar to the gear quality system (grey/white/green/blue/purple/orange).

meanwhile me having lots of crests and sinking deeply on valorstones, and having always need to get more

On problem with the current system is that certain activities in game are very good for one type of currency but not so good at another and vice versa.
So you end up either low on some currency or you end up forced into content you don’t really want to do.

Player agency is diminished.
Used to be that most end game grinds were fairly optional. Netherwing or Orgrila, Cloud Serpents or Sons of Hodir. These were there for you to grind if you wanted but weren’t going to give much by way of gear.

For sure.
Or just a well known system like the coinage. Copper crests, Silver Crests, Gold Crests.

No one said it was perfect but it is the best upgrade system we had in the game by far, compared to previous iterations like valor.

Yes it still has many downsides:

  • Not being intuitive and hard to understand (which I completely agree with you).
  • Not feeling rewarding when coming late into a season/starting a new alt.
  • Having some drawbacks at the end of the season with being capped (and you being flooded with resources).
  • Valorstones, yes just valorstones.

Yes those are many drawbacks, but still the system offers the best kind of progression for characters for several months into the season. What it needs is tweaks around the edges (like the color coding you mentioned which is a good idea), and not being overhauled again for something worse.

Wrong. Give me purple cause purple is better.

Yeah let’s not start a back and forth.
We simply disagree. That’s fine.
