The “default” base layer you’re in is still tied to your realm’s battle group, and more get added to curb overcrowding as layers supposedly do.
Unfortunately this means that there’s still serious faction imbalance when it comes with War Mode ON… depending on what battlegroup you’re in it can either be dominated by Horde or Alliance. And in my case it is beyond dominated by Alliance, typically 1:10… even at 3am it’s like 1:5.
So I kid you not, the chances of getting a War Supply drop in such situations are abysmally low whenever you’re there to see a swarm of the enemy faction consistently regardless of the time. I’ve personally only gotten the drop a grand total of two times since EA, and that’s only by luck due to it dropping right beside me by the coast.
War Mode should have its own ‘mega server’ layer that tries its best to balance out the faction, adding more layers to this to tackle overcrowding — absolutely not tied to battle groups!
It’s still a thing, when you join someone’s group you phase to their layer… when you leave you phase back to your own. Back in your own layer you’d notice that all the solo players are from your realm’s battlegroup. Sometimes you don’t phase back again due to the lead being part of your battle group but on a different layer within it.
This is very noticeable with WM ON.
Plus the non-commodities on the AH [armor, weapons, pets, etc.] are still between connected realms.
They are still using some sort of battlegroups for WarMode ON for sure. On my Burning Legion server I can literally afk in the zone and wait for War Drops, it’s easy to farm. It’s almost everytime 90% Horde, and it is like that for long years. Horde is just dominating, but other hand on different server which is also High pop EN Twisting Nether where I have gathering alt, it’s very hard to get the drop as Horde. It feels like the balance is around 75-85% for Alliance.
The biggest problem for me that kills the whole fun are different layers on the same server. For example as an Alliance Rogue I went in front of Orgrimmar (the old dueling zone), and saw like 12-18 people dueling, afking and talking, BUT when I went there on my main as Horde on the same server there were only 2 guys afking… Reloging, going into the city, and out didn’t helped changing the phase. That’s why open world especially old zones feels dead nowadays. Phasing sucks.
