Blizzard you failed with the Maw, it's not scary or fun

I understand that Blizzard was trying to make the Maw like Dark Souls, a scary area where it can get tough and you can die easily but the thing is that having gazillions of mobs that you can aggro and ending up fighting 20 without having any idea where they even come from is seriously not scary.
I’m a healer so I take a year to kill anything and I seriously just get irritated. Alliance forming a raid to camp the entrance is not very scary either.

Here are some tips on how to make the Maw more entertaining and actually scary:

  • Remove the map function, it makes WoW feel like you’re in a simulator driving a spaceship around, that will make it more immersive
  • Work on the sound, there has to be more screeching and screaming coming from nowhere
  • Instead of us pulling 5 million mobs and calling it “scary” implement sudden effects that players have to dodge and deal with instantly or they just die, that keeps people on edge
  • Have a fog of war so you cannot see 2000 yards so people have to be careful what they walk into
  • Since doing these things will make the game too scary to be rated 12 you have to increase the age rating to 16 which will allow you to implement other things which will be popular with the playerbase including adding inappropriate transmogs (which are extremely popular with the playerbase) and making the storyline grim and dark which is what the Warcraft story is all about. I assume Activision wants to keep this but I am sure that any real dev agrees with this since they are the one’s who came up with the dark storyline originally and I doubt they were thinking of children when they wrote it.
  • Instead of the spirits just being white goobs let them play their nightmare in the Maw like for example if a mother killed her baby I want to run into the ghost standing at a crib saying “oh Charlotte… what have I done… bla bla” to give people shivers

This will make it a lot more like Dark Souls and also a lot more scary. Right now the Maw is just a joke and people do it because they have no choice but I don’t think anyone at all thinks the Maw is exciting or in the slightest scary.

That last idea though, that would be pretty cool.

All very good ideas. I like all of them.

Fog of war is kind of that river of souls area.

The only thing I disagree with is the gazzilions of mobs thing. They should stay.

Either that or it feels like you’re using a map that you charted yourself based on your eye witness.

Ideally it should come from somewhere, and besides there is quite a bit of screeching. What would be nice is if the screeching was coherent - like you’re in Torghast, and a soul yells “HELP! THEY’RE STITCHING US TOGETHER!!” or something.

No, that doesn’t make it scary.

Play Phasmophobia to get a sense of what a scare is in a game. It’s got this tension of “When does the ghost attack!” but you actually have a degree of control over it, it’s not just random. If you work together and identity what you’re up against you can control the ghost.

A misty area of the maw is a pretty great idea. It should be added in a content patch imo.

This comes back to “coherent scares” I mentioned earlier. There are some in the River of Souls, but it does need more, I agree.

Maw is just hell as SOLO it just IS and often I see group of 2-3 players doing it together while also PvP ( I play with WM ON) and isnt that what the players “wanted”.
I mean for me MAW IS some sort of social aspect because as I said its just HELL as solo so it forces me to group up

For example like what?

Also I dont get this “maw MUST be scary”? The only scary thing is horda killing me 3 vs 1 ( as usuall) and then seeing that I lost 400 of stygia but cant even recover it so just wasted my time with that. You are spending every day in MAW and no matter what they do I feel like it just cant be scary, yeah for the first time for sure but after you do it 10 days for every day it cant be scary because you already saw what is there and probably even prepared for whatever is waiting you

That made my skin crawl. You have to remember this game is also child friendly. And some of us are easily impressed by these stuff.

But your ideas are badass nonetheless.

Found your problem.

That last idea LOL…
But I do like them.

100%

They tried but maybe they just ran out of time or they simply aren’t creative enough, so they fall back to their usual ‘Pack it full of enemies and make players run through them’

Oh god no
No no no no no
Hell no

Sure why not

Would really rather not

Just no

It won’t be scary in the slightest
Frustrating as all heck for no reason whatsoever
But not scary

This just seems like a great way to ruin the game

Very hard no from me

And like every other time when they tried to import some feature from other game, it failed miserably. Some people may like it, but Warcraft is the heroic fantasy game, not grimdark SF in which there is only war.

NO. The last time the morons tried to make the game “immersive” we got grounded for OVER A YEAR. Don’t you think letting druids & Worgen run amok is bad enough when all others have to footslog it?

Ctrl+S. And then someone will ask: If players don’t care for this, then why was it done and why did we pay for it?

No, that just makes players flock to hypermobile monkey on speed classes like DH who can get out of any fire and dodge every mechanic pointed at them.

We already have that. It’s called "increased TERRAIN visibility while VASTLY reduced OBJECT & PLAYERS visibility. I’m not sure if you noticed but you see objects like mining/herbalism nodes from about 80y. While we can see one end of a BIG zone from the other. It’s pure BS considering the power of current GPUs. And it doesn’t make the world feel large, it makes the world feel SMALL AF because you have to go everywhere to see what’s there, even with visibility settings turned to max.

Won’t be done because demographics & money. Btw, did you notice that you gotta be 18+ to have an account but 12+ to play? Murican “logik”

Would turn the game rating to M (18+) which is big no-no in US gaming industry. See above.

00:00 Annoying Loud Spirit starts whining like a roleplayer.
00:01 Player casts [Instagib].
00:01 Annoying Loud Spirit dies.

Or Ctrl+S.

No thank you. This game already has too many elements blatantly stolen from other games. Battle pets (Pokemon), grindy solo “content” (Diablo), Torghast (roguelikes), we don’t need any more.

When you have gazed into an abyss over 9000 times it’s not looking into you anymore, it’s hoping that maybe you got enough of this grind and could kindly leave it alone for a change.

Correct. And it’s not funny because mandatory railroad intro quest chain and mandatory grinds. The Light won’t save it. Nothing will save it.

Dark Souls isn’t scary. It’s annoying and emo. So if the goal was to be that game, they nailed it with the annoying bit.

I came in the topic to disagree based on the title but I actually like the suggestions, although I think the chances of blizzard doing this is 0%

I was not against your idea, relax.

I’m just saying a game rate 12 is not supposed to have graphical or horror stuff in it. But a touch of madness in the Maw is needed for sure.

I was just thinking that the Maw needs more torture stuff and having some souls floating around doesn’t feel like hell. So I agree with you that it needs to be more frightening.

Fun fact that this was already a thing in Naxxramus, where the whole place would echo with Thaddius’s screams. Something like that would be fine - although what would scream? Souls? Souls don’t have bodies, they probably don’t have the physical ability left to yell out powerfully enough.

But mobs coming out of nowhere already keeps me on edge.

Already a thing in the River which you venture into a bunch of times.

Not a bad idea.

Even if they don’t change the Maw anymore perhaps they will consider putting more effort in the next big patch and not just give us billions of mobs to run through. I feel like recently they’ve tried to react to feedback and most people genuinely do not like the maw at all. Forum regulars will always say no no no no as seen above but actual players ingame dislike it.

Every idea here is too good but oh… imagine the meltdown of people
