As someone that enjoys the Blizzcon livestreams every year and pays a fair amount for the virtual ticket, i must say that you are focussing on the wrong technical aspects.
Instead of using the latest and greatest gear and codecs to improve streaming quality with sharper pictures and less data sent over the wire, you are narrowing the audience.
Not everyone likes to use a DRM binary in their browser like Widevine or PlayReady.
Blizzard is the owner of all intellectual property surrounding the games and events on BlizzCon. So where is the reason to force us to these Content Decryption Modules? Can't be licensing issues, can it?
Nowadays where you do no longer need Adobe Flashplayer to do a proper streaming and Browsers support Dash and HLS out of the box, i think you should stick with these and not use proprietary stuff.
Isnt it something to do with preventing people from broadcasting the streams and screen sharing.
Essentially cutting down on piracy and hoping to generate more revenue from people signing up because they cant watch a pirated stream. ? I am talking from a non experienced view point though...

So far i haven't heard of any pirated blizzcon streams and quite a lot of ithe content doesn't require you to buy a blizzcon ticket. Even the free videos are drm protected though.
if you really want to, you can always film the screen and go for a little less quality for your "pirate stream". ;)

I did say I was not experienced. I just vaguely recall one year there being a massive amount of streams on twitch, and them being shut down as fast as they were appearing.

Every year has some, sometimes they're the most watched streams :s, but as said above they do get shut down aswell.

Maybe, maybe not. But it is necessary to bring up the topic if you want something changed.
Blizzcon Streams and VoD weren't protected in the past, so it is very possible to go back to that.
The arguments for this DRM are also something i want to hear.
Maybe too many twitch streams, too much work for killing that off, maybe it is IP after all, but just turning it on without explanation is not good.
This DRM issue covers more than just linux people.
And Linux covers more than EME and changelogs proper ;)

piracy on stream because everyone need to pay the £50 for the viewing lol ... its a massive joke just blizzard grabbing even more money from people.
if blizzard wanted to get the most viewers and the biggest audiance they would stream the content for free.
no other reason to adding restrictions and regulations other than pure filthy greed.
if i'm not mistaken twitch is a free viewing platform ... ? you get the option to pay to support people .. but you never pay to actually watch content... people should be boycotting this !@#$ .. but ofc no one is noticing it cause they are too damn fickle lol.

What's the point of big audience if they don't monetize it?

sales. word of mouth more eyes more distance
they are more interested in the quick money fix rather than the bigger longer money fix.
either that or they know they got nothing amazing to talk about this year.

Publicity. In the end, Blizzcon is just a form of advertising Blizzard products.

I doubt they can increase sales through marketing. There's literally not a single mmo player who doesn't know about WoW.

Ofc they increase sales through marketing. BFA is a great example of that, or do you think they invested millions in cinematics and tv advertising just for fun?

You do know they always run Blizzcon at a loss right? Every time. This is not to say about the money the games make outside of Blizzcon etc but for this event itself they don't gain from it financially.

i highly doubt it will be the loss this time with the price of the ticket.
depending on how many people actually bought it .. (i didn't buy it but im guessing most the people here did.)

It's a loss every time they do blizzcon my dude. They know this and have stated they do not do it for the financial gain. No matter how high those ticket prices go, they'd be lucky if they even came remotely close to leveling out the money they put in.

i wouldn't of bought bfa if it wasn't for its marketing campaign. as i wasn't playing the game at the time.

Yeah the 10 000 000 that they make only with presential tickets isnt enough to organize a 2 day event like Blizzcon :p Now imagine the amount they make with virtual tickets... Toillet paper probably is made of gold foil.

Blizzard do not give actual numbers due to obvious reasons. But have stated they run the con at a loss. This is not an assumption, it is fact. :)
