Brewmaster monk state

Hey peeps,

Just a general question to get a general idea: how bad the state of Brewmaster monks right now for mythic and general game? I’m enjoying my paladin a lot, but my altoholic brain started to look for another, not heavy looking, not furry tank and saw brewmaster.

I read on icy veins that it’s in a horrible state right now… is it that bad? Haven’t played tank monk at all before, only fistweaving and that was kind of overwhelming a bit, especially in mythic. So all in all: would I be drowned in buttons after prot pally?

Thanks in advance!

Yes. There are many buttons but after a short time, you will get used to it. It is not that bad for a player with tanking experience.

After playing prot paladin, you will live harder times with BM monk’s survivability and feel more healer reliant.

Yes, this is what I’m utterly afraid of… with pally I don’t even notice if the healer is afk, but I’m pretty sure with BrM I’d notice it asap. It looks fun to play it, but I wouldn’t want more stress. Might be a skip then.

Horrible? It is not.

Would you mind elaborating the thought a bit further? What I’m looking for is survivability and independence from the healer, similar how paladins are. I understand that trial might be needed to see if it fits my stress free tanking or not :+1:t2:

Imho, there are no bad classes, it all depends on how you play, and how you master it.

For some the easiest class might be the hardest to play, and the hardest the easiest to master.

From my own experience, brewmaster has really high damage, however, when it comes to the survivability, I do not think there is a tank class that does not need a healer. Even DK self healing god needs one.

So yeah, do not focus on what the guides or people are saying, for instance, I switched to bear in the beginning of the season, and people were saying it is the worst tank and etc, guess what? Timed 18 key with 414 ilvl.

So it is all about you, and not the class.

Brewmaster may not be the best option to choose if you want less healer dependance. That niche is mainly filled by Blood Death Knight.

In terms of number of buttons Brewmaster has a lot to work with, perhaps a bit too much. The rotation works on a priority system, but what I found can be irritating is the initial ramp. You have to spend a lot of GCD to set up for your burst damage (atleast 3-4 seconds) which can cause threat issues from time to time.

In terms of survivability you need gear to start rolling. Being undergeared hurts you a lot, possibly more as a tank like prot warrior or Prot paladin as a big source of our healing comes from celestial fortune, which is a crit reliant stat. You have to track your orbs more frequently while undergeared, and you need to know what abilities hit you hard as when you are out of cooldowns you use that healing to get you back to a healthy state.

From the durability side you are set, as you have a lot of on demand defensives and stagger is a nice safety net in itself. You do need to know where to use those defensives but that comes with time. What you need to keep in mind is that once you reach red levels with stagger you need to pay good attention to your HP and possibly kite.

Overall if you get to overgear the content this is not an issue, and even if you do content in level maintenance heal from your healer should be enough to keep you healthy. Your orb usage with Expel Harm will handle the rest.

If you do not mind the button bloat and the complexity it is a spec woeth learning. A well played Brewmaster is not only durable, but also versatile and dishes out a crapton of damage with the right gear.

The learning curve is big, but if you overcome it Brewmaster is not going to disappoint you. If button bloat is an issue you can still drop some abilities to mate it more bearable (like the tiger statue). The only CD I really recommend keeping is Weapons of Order, as the damage increase affects your borrowed powers as well (trinket damage procs, annulet procs, polearm effect).

And even if you do not have an immunity you can get away with doing mechanics no other tank can. As a Brewmaster I can solo soak the meteor ability of the fire elemental on the Amalgamation fight without a sweat, multiple times in a row, on any difficulty.
