So I named one of my characters using what could be considered a mature pun, and eventually got dinged for it. And fair enough, I’ve changed the phrasing of the name. The thing is, I have another character with the exact same name that never got reported. I presume that if that one also starts getting reported, I will get banned for repeatedly using the same name, even though the character existed long before the second one got renamed? Or will that character be treated just as leniently as if it was the first offense? The ticketing system tells me to just report offensive names in-game, but I’d rather avoid doing something that can trigger a ban.
You can always buy character rename.
Quite possibly you could still convince someone reasonable (a living person
) to flag you for a name change and to my knowledge it wouldn’t be the first time someone had succeeded at this.
The way in which a random individual can interpret your name is still highly subjective so don’t be surprised if you get declined, but acting preemptively can’t hurt if you are forthcoming with your concern.
If eventually you accumulate enough reports that triggers some kind of a penalty you will then be able to attach a valid complaint to your appeal - their response on the matter.
Speaking of offensive names; if you were once already forced to change a name and have chosen an exact same phrase but for example with accented characters, you will no doubt end up in trouble for recidivism, but I’m not entirely excluding the possibility of some forgiveness if there has been a change in wording.
Here’s an example of a similar request. Look for the blue reply.
Please submit a ticket for self-report and review. They generally allow a rename especially if that toon hasn’t had a previous penalty before (you didn’t rename it exactly back, to challenge the penalty.)
This would be the correct way to go.
If you want to report an inappropriate name for one of your own characters, you can contact us and we’ll generally allow you to change it without any penalty, if the name is indeed inappropriate.
Please do not try to have your friends / guild / other players report your name via the in-game report system. Abusing this system may result in an account suspension.
Well, I did so yesterday, and I just got the answer. The GM told me to buy a name change if I want to, and that “I did not find any inappropriate names.” . Even though I got penalized for using that name on a different char not even a week ago. So I’m not entirely sure what I’m supposed to do now. Clearly another GM found it bad enough to force a name change on one of my characters. Is it literally down to chance whether the random person that is assigned to the inappropriate name report finds it bad enough?
Ultimately, this is a judgement call from a human being, yes.
If you believe that a name is inappropriate, but if it’s not necessarily obvious to everyone, you can try to explain how the name is inappropriate in a new ticket, and mention that the same name was actioned in the past if you haven’t already.
What’s the name?
(continuity error edit)
How do I say it without saying it. It’s uhh… Malfurion, but spelled with an “i”, and on a female night elf. She even has antlers in her transmog! I’m guessing the acceptability of it is heavily dependent on both your sense of humor and knowledge of the slang
I use internet for a lot of weird stuff but I literally have close to no idea as to what it might be implying. I would suggest asking around your friend circles for more opinions before contesting the first forced name change.
To whom it may offend; to me those CS replies you received sound too vague. If it had happened to be something truly offensive you would have been punished on the spot with the first mention of the name in question.
