Can someone break down the different classes for me (gameplay wise)? What did help you choose a main?

New to MMOs as a whole. I tried all the classes, every class looks cool and I have no particular thing to look for as of fantasy since all have something unique. What has helped you the most in choosing your main?

Honestly I also find everything cool. My suggestion for you would be to just play something cool that you enjoy and then stick to it. If you play too many classes, you can’t learn the game properly.

Short: Stick to one class you enjoy, and don’t worry too much.

There was never a point where I wasn’t sure I was going to play a Warrior, from the very first moment I loaded up the game before I even created my character. You have to go with what feels right, with what makes most sense for you.

  1. Open world survivability (solo rares/elites/giant packs)

  2. Best looking mogs

  3. Most fun gameplay for me

Depending on what you enjoy you might also want to consider what role you enjoy most (Healer, tank, dps, all 3), what content you want to do (raid, M+, pvp, solo content).

Monk ist the most fun class but sadly underrated

Playing a Priest, have been since TBC… at this point I just wished there was a Class Change service so I can ditch it, Blizz changes Shadow Priest every other patch and revamps it every expansion, gets really annoying. And it’s a class that involves a lot of work where a simpler class takes less effort to output way more DPS. -.-

play them all and play whatever mood you are at, pvp wise this is good as you learn every class and how to fight vs them, for ad/hd type person its good to have variety so your never bored, so only wins by playing whatever in my book

you cant do wrong by playing game with what you like or how you like, or i dont want to be right

Since the beggining it was a fantasy i really resonated with.
Though i did start with Hunter cause of the pet class and beautiful night elf starting zone and a oriest cause comong from FFXI i thought it would make it easier to get into groups.
Once i knew the game better and it became viable in TBC i went with my current main as Ret Paladin. Though i play Prot and Holy too.

I don’t have main, I have few I like to play. I choosed lock as main because they have cool mogs and spells, but eventually I leveled basically everything and tried to play them in at least +11 or so, to see if I like. I know for sure that I don’t like melee, but if I would choose the best, it would.be fury warrior. I like dynamic play style, without much of a planning (since I’m Aries) ,so I choose those kind of specs. Currently, playing holy priest, warlock.

I tend not to like what is popular too

When I started playing I went with rogue cause it had stealth and I liked sneaking past mobs.I didn’t always wanted to fight everything in sight.
But once DH came along in Legion I never looked back or even liked another class as much. And it even made fighting everything fun for a change.

For me it was, and still is, just the class fantasy of a dwarven Rifleman from WC3. Nothing more, nothing less…

If you’ve tried all the classes, you need to decide if you want to be:
tank - the guy who stands next to the mobs taking lots of damage but with quite a few ways to soak it up
healer - the guy who heals the tank and themselves while often being able to do a bit of healing on dps if they’re lucky
melee dps - the guy who stands next to the boss and hits it
ranged dps - the guy who stands a long way away from the boss and shoots bullets/spells at it

Once you’ve decided that, you need to decide which playable race you want to be (and thus which faction). Try lots of them and see which you feel most comfortable with. But do beware, you will have to choose this whilst also choosing your class as not every race can be every class.

Now onto class - which one sounds your ‘thing’ and which spec of that class. They all have pros and cons … personally I’m a Draenei shadow priest - a ranged dps with quite a bit of self healing. However while I have the self healing, I don’t have the advantage others have such as hunters and warlocks who have ‘pets’ they can send in to act as tanks which protect them for a while.

Try everything that appeals to you and eventually you’ll find that one class that’s the only one for you.

Welcome, and the best of luck with the game. If you need help there’s a newcomers’ forum (https://eu.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/c/guides/new-returning-player-questions-guides/236) or ask here if it’s more general. There are very helpful people here (ignore the rest). It will all seem a bit overwhelming at the start, but you’ll get there

Short version, it needs to feel good in the role I want to play it in.

Figuring out what “feels good” is kind of a combination of:

  • aesthetics (mostly constant and known in advance)
  • gameplay (mild variations per season but largely the same)
  • tuning (can swing wildly between seasons)

As much as I want to believe in “play what you enjoy”, which would basically be the first two points, the last factor in enjoyment (for me) does have to be it’s performance in group situations. If it’s known to be underpowered or lack utility, this will make it harder for me to join groups, and that will directly affect my enjoyment. Pretending otherwise is just lying to myself and you.

Regarding advice for a brand new player… shortlist 3 that you like most in terms of visuals and gameplay, then go research which of them is “doing well” right now. Avoid your first character being one that will never get invited to anything because that’s just going to result in a poor experience. If you have no particular commitment to any particular spec, pick one that is currently S-tier and enjoy being wanted.

Additional note… aesthetics and gameplay do matter. I don’t want to come across like I’m saying they don’t and you should always play the FOTM spec. There are some S-tier specs I don’t enjoy, even though they have no problems getting groups. Conversely, I have some characters I know I enjoy gameplay wise, but which are currently poorly rated so I’m letting them idle for a bit rather than sit in queues.

For a first character, it really is just finding a compromise between what you like, and what other people want you to be playing. Some specs are better played once you have an established social network with whom you can group up.

Just try out classes you think look interesting, Class fantasy doesn’t always make good gameplay. I like the beastmaster fantasy but i think its also very boring.

So yeah just try classes and speccs out until you find something you like.

Classes like paladin and druid are good for beginners i guess. You got all 3 roles for instances so you can try all roles and see what fits you best and then pick a class or specc based on wether you like tanking/healing/dmg

I’ve always thought of myself as a bit physically weak, so to me it’s a fun power fantasy to have that not matter and become powerful with magic.

I also enjoy seeing health go down in chunks. BOOM.

I can try to do that

Cloth classes:

  1. Mage - high mobility, fragile and cannot self-heal, but slippery and smart, has a lot of tricks (especially arcane), every spec can use 3 different schools of magic, although it concentrates on one. The quintessential caster archetype.
  2. Warlock - the “tank” of casters - uses dark magic to make enemies suffer. Not very mobile, but has a lot of health and can drain life to heal itself. Has the magic of teleportation with portals and gateways. Affliction has only access to shadow magic, but destruction has also chaos and fire. Demonology summons armies of demons to overwhelm their opponents.
  3. Priest - balances light and dark. Has a DPS spec, a pure healer spec, and an in-between spec - mostly healing, but also damage (discipline). Has strong support for team mates and is highly valued - can give power infusion, shields, and also even swap health with somebody to save them, or you. Shines in group play.

Leather:

  1. Rogue - uses a lot of CC and has the best stealth of all - even if you break stealth, they can still use stealth abilities for a while. Very slippery and hard to kill. Can reset the fight easily and escape. Also very mobile. A lot of tricks in their bag. Very hard to master. The more you invest in it, the more it pays off. Mostly single-target focused, although Outlaw can hit all enemies around it too.
  2. Druid - can do everything, the only class with 4 specs. The gameplay is to shift between roles, although you focus on your main role. Go bear when you need to survive, go feral when you need to stealth etc. Very versatile class, a lot for you to explore and learn. Many different playstyles.
  3. Demon hunter - while rogue is all about finesse and tricks, demon hunter is about pure brute force - jump into the fray and try to kill everybody at once with chaos magic. It is a melee, but many attacks deal magic damage. Very fast and mobile, can fly up into the air, dash at opponents. Uses leech to heal itself while doing damage to enemies. But when stunned, can be fragile and die easily due to having only leather armor.
  4. Monk - the only class that uses hand combat - the fantasy of a martial artist who uses speed and precision to burst down enemies and kill them quickly. Very slippery as it can retreat and get into combat easily and frustrate enemies.

Mail:

  1. Hunter - the only class that can attack from range with physical attacks (all other ranged classes are magic-based). Cannot self-heal that much and does not have many strong defensive abilities, but uses range and traps to defend itself. Very easy to start with, but hard to master. Has a melee spec, but it is the most range-oriented of all melee specs. Has strong pets that help the hunter and others with a lot of utility. My favorite class
  2. Shaman - master of the elements and totems. Strongest in group context. Has very strong support for others in the form of totems. Has a lot of magic families - frost, fire, nature and combines them all
  3. Evoker - you burn down your enemies with fire, and manipulate time magic to protect yourself. Has very short range, compared to other casters, so is required to play in close range - jump into the fray.

Plate:

  1. Warrior - always wants to be in the middle of the battlefield, does heavy physical damage. Good at attacking many enemies at once. Excels in group play with a healer, but is still tanky and resourceful. Can play both as a crazy barbarian (fury) or as a disciplined veteran (arms). Very disruptive, but can struggle if it cannot get into melee range, as it has no ranged attacks almost at all
  2. Death knight - very different from warrior - most of the attacks are magic damage, even the melee attacks. Has self-healing and magic absorption, can sustain itself, especially if killing enemies, fueling its self-healing even further. Uses pets, diseases and frost magic. Has the strongest slow effect in the game - chains of ice. Very unique utility - death grip and abomination limb. No other class has this.
  3. Paladin - warrior of the light. Cannot charge and jump like a warrior, but can use its mount in combat, can attack from longer range compared to most other melees, and has the strongest utility and support. Can heal itself and its party. Strong both in group play, but also on ins own.

So I’d suggest you pick the fantasy and playstyle that resonates the most with you, and not what is currently strongest, because these things change all the time.

It really really really depends on your view on the game itself.

But at the end of the day, if you want to really find a Main – pick a class/race that you vibe with. Meta doesn’t matter that really in most cases (unless you’re planning to be Hall of Fame raider or 2400+ PvP player where meta really matters I guess). So as you already tried all of them – draw your aesthetics and mechanical expectations and build your pick on this.

For example, I decided to stick with Monk from the start of DF. The reasons behind this pick were simple: I wanted multi-role class for easy and fast access to most of the content (it can be hard sometimes for pure DPS classes), so it left me with a choice between Monk, Paladin and Druid. I don’t like Holy theme so Paladin dropped off. I like pets and nature, but I don’t really like shapeshifting stuff, so Druid fell off too. So I decided to stick with Monk. And while sometimes my bottom burns since Monk isn’t blizzard’s favorite child, I don’t regret picking it at all. Inner peace, martial arts, focus and exploration are great themes for me.

Also, beer.

Originally the classes were a lot more different than they are now. Now all of the same role have the same abilities with a slightly different execution.

If I were to pick class today, it would be based on what lore I prefer.

Very helpful and detailed! Thank you a lot, sir!

2-3 years in and I am yet to choose my main. Whenever I’m convinced by one class as my main, I come by another one and think of how cool they look and how cool their lore is, makes me want to start a new class
