Can someone explain about Protection Paladin CDz

Hello. Iam total noob at tanking, I did like 6 dungeons until now (81 lvl). I do not understand some things. Bubble. I use it - I lose aggro. Same with protection cd, do not remember name now, writing from phone, not familiar with names. So I should never use them on me? Only on others? Maybe some experianced people could share some tips with me as a fresh tank, mostly about cooldowns and how to properly use them. Thank you for reading, and sorry for my bad eng. Looking forward for tips.

Hey Dubstepa, welcome to Prot tanking.

As Prot you get quite a few CDs, and yes you gotta learn when to use what.

First off, Bubble. You don’t get to use it in just about any scenario in group content as you will lose aggro. In some raids or VERY specific encounters you may actually use it and it rocks, but those are far and in between, you’ll learn about those when you tackle that content (Mythic Taloc is an example).

As a Tank you have three jobs. Get hit. Make sure nobody else gets hit. And stay alive.

Aggro is incredibly easy as Prot, drop consecration, shield, judge and hammer of wrath. You also get two interrupts, with avengers shield proccing thus granting you a LOT of interrupts.

CDs :

Ardent Defender is great and a very nice oh crap button. Use it when you are going south of 20% for extra goodness.

LoH is tricky. It’s an ace CD but since you can throw it at other party members I like to keep it for them as much as possible.

BoS passes damage from the target to you. I use this almost exclusively for healers in most content. Use in high AoE damage fights or if you see your health bar looking ok and your healer’s looking bad.

Magic Shield is basically bubble against magic attacks minus the loss of aggro. One of the best CDs in the entire game. Use it on bosses for high magic damage attacks.

Always cleanse, not just you but other party members if you can. Your healers will love you.

Other CDs are rather self explanatory, 50% damage reduction, Charger, Hammer of Justice…

GL and have fun. For my money, Prot Paladins are a ton of fun, accessible but with a lot of room for player growth.

Bubble can be used for tanking if you spec Final Stand. It’s fun to do.

You can also use Divine Shield and Blessing of Protection to remove nasty debuffs from yourself without [meaningfully] losing aggro if you immediately remove them afterwards. Bind this macro:

/cancelaura Blessing of Protection
/cancelaura Divine Shield

There’s more of this you can do, but it might be a bit early for you to go for advanced tricks.

I also wanted to say about Ardent Defender that most of the time you don’t use it for the cheat death effect, you use it for the damage reduction.

Yes, use BoP on yourself and drop all agro when your screen is flashing red like it’s catching fire and you are about to die. It’s better that the mobs and boss go after some silly dps (hopefully a huntar) rather than getting yourself killed as a tank and wipe the group, isn’t it? Yes, go for it.
