Well, if that is the case, I got really, really, lucky.
They used to let you free up names in the past but stopped at some point.
Usually it’s 2 expantions of the account being inactive, which is pretty meh if someones still active on a different realm but has a name you want locked on an unused character.
Well going off old rp policies. Alot of names which can be poached are things like “Alistair” and things similar akin to fantasy esque names since the rest used to be deemed reportable on RP servers, so examples of reportable names would be “burgerking, Shethicc” stuff like that.
Here is the actual post from Blizzard in regards to names particularly on RP servers which would more clarify why its a problem on RP realms atleast, source is below
`Additional Rules for Role Playing Realms
World of Warcraft Role Play (RP) realms are intended to provide players with an added level of immersion in the game world and must avoid being disruptive to the world. Examples of common unacceptable or disruptive RP names include (but are not limited to):
Non-medieval or non-fantasy names (For example: Slipnslide, Robotman, Discoinferno)
Names that reference well known people, characters, brands, places, or icons (For example: Britneyspears, Austinpowers, Mcdonalds, Georgewashington, Newyork)
Names that consist of multiple words (For example: Inyourface, Welovebeef, Howareyou, Sixtyseventy)
Blizzard reserves the right to assign a random name to any character violating our RP naming policy. For more severe or repeat violations, we may apply additional penalties to the account.

it’s the free market baby
Got my irl surname which is weird but also based
Also if you’re not fast you’re last, real shame, guess you have to pay up with some gold for that human name you’ve always wanted
I’ve never had trouble getting good names. Using real money to buy names seems hilarious and sad to me. Lmao
Just don’t sell it for real money. Otherwise I don’t see a problem.
I can’t imagine who would stoop so low as to sell names for a variety of currencies.
Redacted
Thing is, even if somebody is selling names for real-world money, how can Blizzard act on that? They could just as well say “Oh, so-and-so asked me if I could have this name, they said yes, now the name’s mine” and then that’s all done and dusted.
Personally I’m not keen on the practice, I think it’s akin to people buying tickets for concerts purely for the purpose of resale at a higher price, but it’s one of those things where it doesn’t matter what I think, because as long as people are willing to pay, people’ll be willing to sell.
I don’t understand how it even exists. This is an RP server, everyone has their RP profile add on of choice where they can name themselves whatever they want. So what’s the point of trying to sell or buy names here of all places.
If your character is called “Jack Morrowind” then you’d like to have either Jack or Morrowind as an OOC name.
It’s for when you do events across faction, if that person doesn’t have CrossRP then you can’t see their profile hence not knowing their IC name correctly. Plus it also is satisfying to look at when you have an OOC name which is the same as your IC name.
i wish the level 10 orc that now doesn’t exist anymore sold his name so i wouldn’t have to damn myself to an eternity of using í
On top of what forum user Goldsail-argent-dawn said, TRP doesn’t handle people doing direct emotes at you, if I set my name as “Jack Morrowind” and someone did a /look or /whatever at me, it would still show up as “X looks at Arano.”
