Cant access General chat on some of my characters

in Retail wow. What is going on? I tried disabling all addons but that didnt help.

Are you in general chat?
If you’re not sure, try /Join General

Yeah i think i am. But both General and Trade are greyed out.

Sorry to hear about the chat channel issues you have. Kathdruid makes a good point about the /join command but do make sure to use it while in a Capital City such as Orgrimmar. Alternatively if that doesnt work, there are a few more steps you can try shown at this link.

Thanks! Now General and Trade seems to work when i go to city like Dalaran but at questing zones like Azsuna, Stormheim etc, General chat does not work? What is going on?

I tried Retail on another computer and cant access General chat on it either. :confused:

Well if it’s not working on another PC it’s definitely due to the character / account settings. Perhaps while you are in Aszuna you can try to leave all the chat channels and rejoin them. That could have the effect of a refresh you see.

Firstly, to leave all the channels just type the following:

/leave 1
/leave 2
/leave 3
/leave 4

After that, join them all again by typing the following:

/join general
/join trade
/join localdefense
/join lookingforgroup

Fingers crossed this finally sorts it for you!

I have the same issue with trade chat, I can’t access it and doing /join Trade doesn’t work for me.

Hey Blightsoul, if doing it via the chat commands isn’t working you can also try via the general config.

Please note, before doing this you will need to disable your addons as one of them could be the route cause.

  1. Hover the mouse over the chat window until the “General” tab shows up.
  2. Right click the general tab and click “Settings”.
  3. Click Chat Defaults on the bottom left.
  4. Click “Global Channels” on the left navigation bar
  5. Enable the channels at the top via the tick box, or join them from the available channels in the lower section

I asked one player at Azsuna and he doesnt have General chat there either. So it seems that Blizzard has removed General chat from some or all old quest zones.

Same went to Azuna and Valshara and neither zone let me access general or local defence chat.

Got General chat in Shadowmoon valley.

I have the same issue. I cannot use /1, /2, /3 in Stormheim (Legion zone). I tried everything mentioned :confused:
The channels are greyed out (but the tickbox is checked). /4 has the normal color in the settings and I can use it in Stormheim.

Hey all o/

Just wanted to drop on by and let you know that there is an underlying issue to the whole chat channel thing and it’s being looked into. In the meantime, the above workarounds commented should work however you may have to do it in each and every zone you have a missing channel and you may have to do it more than once.

Again this is something that’s being looked into and when the issue is fixed, an update will be posted on our patch / hotfix notes.

All the things are useless to access to join ‘‘the general chat’’. Blizzz means you should listen trade chat spams. Good luck with that useless game.

As of 02 nov 2020 this is still a thing. None of the suggested solutions work.

Can confirm chat does not work in stormheim, can only /say
