Can't find game files

I bought a new laptop and installed WoW 2 weeks ago. I just want to change/silence the login screen music. In retail I can’t find any sound folder or anything for that matter. Am I missing something?

All the game files are stored in compressed CASC form inside the Data folder. You’re not missing anything. You can replace a file by creating the proper folder path inside retail folder and putting a new file with the same name to for example create Sound folder to replace some sounds. You can check the full path and file name using some CASC viewer software.

Also it’s technicly against ToS to look in the game files are replacing them.

Ok, thank you, I did what you suggested and it worked, but my blank mp3 just gets deleted every so often. My problem is this:
I have set the game options so that WoW does not make sound whilst minimized. Every time I go afk, I minimize WoW, but, if I didn’t have time to not only log out but disconnect from the server as well, the game boots me automatically after a period of inactivity. When this happens, even though WoW is still minimized, the login music will start to play on a loop. You may wonder why I am upset about something so trivial, but due to my health condition, I often have to go afk suddenly, and then get stuck unable to return to the PC for hours and potentially days, so would rather not be subjected to the music loop like this. I don’t really want to have to turn ingame music off though :frowning:

I don’t think the file can be completely empty. It should contain a silence, maybe few minutes of it.

Also did you recreate the full path for the proper file? Here’s what I found on reddit:

  • Go to your World of Warcraft directory (usually C:\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft/_retail_/);
  • Create a new folder named “Sound”;
  • Inside that folder, create another named “Music”;
  • Create another folder called “battleforazeroth”;
  • Place an .mp3 file of your song of choice and rename it to “mus_80_beforethestorm_maintitle.mp3”.

Thanks for replying , yeah my sound is silence for 2 minutes, and yes that is the path and file name I used. I have changed the file to read only, and it hasn’t been deleted … yet :stuck_out_tongue: we will see.
