For some reason there is no option for me to buy a wow token from the shop in character selection.
To be clear, im talking about retail.
I am not sure what you are trying to do.
You don’t buy the token from “the shop in character selection”. On the character selection screen you can choose to “reactivate” the account, from there you can buy it from the Auction House, IF any are available, and IF you have enough gold, and IF you have previously purchased gametime with real money. Otherwise the option won’t be there.
I dont want to buy for gold. I want to buy for money and sell for gold.
You need to be logged in to the character you with to sell the token. Click on the in game shop (W icon on the minibar) - 2nd from bottom on the list on the left.
