Can't pick a main.. Mage or hunter? Help me out!

Okay so I like both of these classes a lot… but I can’t seem to pick a main.

What I like about:

  • Mage: the visuals, portals, spells, the class fantasy.
  • Hunter: the personal tank (pet), the ‘adventurer’-vibe, doing open world content etc is just so much more easier.

I can’t always solo elites on my mage, I can on my hunter. I do like to be able to solo content. Basically I just need a tank on my mage and we’re good to go… but we don’t. And no, I don’t want to play Warlock :>

I love playing my frost mage, you can kite most mobs for days on 1 of those
It’s true you can’t really tank but i’ve never found that to be an issue so far. It’s also noteworthy that i’m not a particularly good gamer. I don’t do anything crazy or special :stuck_out_tongue:

I unfortunately can’t compare to a hunter, i have very limited experience playing one of those.

Mage. Mage is better. What did you expect asking the mage forum :yum:

I have hunters and only recently got into mage play, I have to say they are really enjoyable to play. Their specs are varied enough too and being able to portal/teleport as needed is great.

How are you coping with elites and other stuff you have to solo?

Doing my best to kite, freeze in place and use the time skill - but it doesn’t always pay off xD

Outgear or phone a friend

Sometimes you gotta clear an area before you can effectively kite them around, so you don’t attract 50 adds in the meantime :stuck_out_tongue:
If you want extra kiting on frost you can talent for it as well, even though your damage might suffer a bit

It’s straightforward but sometimes you gotta plan a little ahead

Yes! That caught me out, esp. when not paying attention to where I blink to… to avoid a damage move. Blinked right into trash mobs and made the situation a lot worse.

I couldn’t get into frost, some of the skills cast slow and its summonable ally casts slower than something very slow. It doesn’t tank or draw aggro off me either. Then again I know little about mage (warlock afflict main until recently.) I’ve only played frost spec at low level though.

For a random boss mob I’d do something like: Arcane power > touch of magi > Arcane orb > Slow > Fire blast > Arcane barrage > Arcane missiles > Freeze > move a bit. More DPS. When things are on cool down and its on me > Alter time > DPS and move to lure it > un-alter time > rinse-repeat to try to kill it XD

Really I am looking for a new WoW experience away from Warlock and I love ranged DPS casting!

Or my favorite thing when none of that works and group finder is dead… sit there and wait for someone to come by :stuck_out_tongue:

Tbh frost really gets going a little later in the game :stuck_out_tongue:

I never really liked the water elemental, it plays a bit wonky imo. It can come in handy tho the draw initial aggro on some mobs. other than that lonely winter is the most optimal 15 talent which dismisses the elemental so it renders that point moot :stuck_out_tongue:

double frost nova, glacial spike (if talented) are a lot of roots. add the slows and blink or shimmers for insane mobility and you can give these mobs the infinite run around lol
The appeal to me are the options. While there is a certain playstyle you need to adhere to to max your dps, there is enough flexibility to define your own playstyle.

You can also tank a little with ice barrier, but that’s nothing insane. It does help a bit tho.

So if you haven’t noticed i know frost decently well, i’m pretty clueless on the other specs. Funny enough i just started playing a warlock myself, tho i’m trying out destro. pretty fun imo xD

Haha yes well sometimes I don’t feel like waiting, especially when I know my hunter can solo it… :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for that advise, going to save that for future reference when I do give Frost another go

I know the feeling, it’s the same with being a warlock.

When I levelled my mage I also levelled alchemy. having flasks and pots made life a lot easier.

im between Rogue and Warlock for SL… i feel like I should play a Pure DPS Optionn as i only wanna play DPS xD, Shadows alittle risky given blizzards past with balancing :expressionless: hard choices.

out of those 2, i’d likely recommend Mage. hunters cool, but you’ll lose your tank Playing MM… Survival is Well a #DeadSpecc. and Melee needing a completely different weapon.

Mage all 3 Speccs wear the same game (Although may have different stat priorities) and share all Utility. meaning specc choice wont be as Punishing.

Mages bring Spellsteal, Int buff, BL, while having good mobilty… generally always high performance. with 3 Speccs whih can be utilitised without too much uptime of having to gear each of them individually.

so if u love both As much as each other, i’d personally recommennd Mage based on opinons which i can have realistically, they’re both good options, but i feel Mage Brings more QoL When it comes to Spec Swapping, has good Utility accessible by all your Speccs without having to jump through any hoops. and doesnt have any speccs which u can Reliably write off for a expansion.

cant really have a opinon on which one u’ll prefer overall, but mage is defintly a Practical and reliable option, which will defintly be wanted in all content and comes with some Perks which give QoL to some aspects of the game

if you like both the same way go hunter for better solo capabilities. as a mage its hard to solo immune to cc stuff
